Both are good enough. Liara is my canon but I have a few Ashley romances that I have done. I am thinking people that stayed loyal to Ashley will get a big pay off.

I had a hard time in ME1, I thought both Liara and Ashley were really interesting characters and ultimatly it came down to the fact that I wanted the blue chick (because hey it's a fantasy game, and I see no problem with indulging in weird fantasies). In ME2 Liara retrived your body, matured and grew up into a really strong and independant women, and I prefer her over Ashley by a little bit. What happens in ME3 I guess remains to be seen, but I think I'll have Liara as my LI through all 3 games on my "canon" playthrough. I see pros and cons with both women though.

You mean all four of them?

BatmanPWNS must've ignored the Or and ? romances.

Ok, now I am confused. I didn't read every post but the OP is asking "Liara or Ashley? Which relationship is more compelling?" and I said both, as in Liara and Ash, are compelling.

There are a number of relationships that are superior to that of Williams. Liara does go in search of Shepard's body, but she doesn't collect it to revive you. She does it so that you can get a funeral. When she hands Shep's carcass over to Cerberus they tell her that they are going to attempt to restore him. She reluctantly agrees and we see the end result.

But Liara isn't the only one who believes in Shepard. Tali comes from a people who experienced violence from Cerberus, Quarians died and even on Freedom's Progress, Cerberus wants to continue treating the Quarians as property rather than as people. Yet, she stands by Shepard.

Miranda needs Cerberus to protect both herself and her sister from her estranged father. She stands by Shepard knowing first hand how dangerous it is to defy TIM and places both herself and her sister at risk to stand by Shepard.

Ashley? In less than three and one half minutes of not seeing you for more than two years and with Shepard having saved her life for the third time, she abandons you on Horizon as a fraud and a traitor. I think that her record speaks for itself.

Therefore, I believe that Liara, Tali, and Miranda are all superior relationships when compared to that of Ashley.

Ashley turned her back to the Alliance by following Shepard to Ilos. She had so much to lose by doing that. Sure the others followed too, but Ashley was practically throwing away everything her, and family had worked for by going along with it.

So what? If Ashley walked away on Horizon. At the time, she was confused, emotional, and didn't understand the situation, so she did the easiest thing - lash out, then sent an apology later. Some people just expect Ashley to fall in line like a good little soldier, when a dead man magically shows up in front of her after two years, wearing the wrong colours.

Shepard can ask her to join him, but she rejects. And you know, what? Shepard shouldn't ask anything of Ashley because so far, she's never asked him for anything. All the other romances have. Liara made you do her dirty work, and so did every other squad mate in ME2. You had to do work/tasks/favours for their affection.

Personally, I like the Ashley romance, because Ashley challenges Shepard. She's stubborn, and does her own thing. And I can't see my Shepard liking a woman who’s simple putty in his hands. Now, I’d like to say, I've got nothing against Liara. She's awesome and is my second favourite squad mate. And you know, you can pick whoever you want to romance. It's your decision. All the romances are somewhat good in their own right.

Well Liara and Ashley did have that little rivalry thing going on in ME 1 and while Tali was a squadmate in ME 1 she didn't come into her own as a character (nor was available for romance) until ME 2.

For FemShep, the only romance I can even conceive is Liara. Liaramance seems to be a favorite of Bioware too, since the focus it gets.

For me, I believe the Liara romance more than any other romance in the game, and find it to be the most compelling. But that's just my opinion, and I'm not going to claim it to be fact or anything.

I'd probably say Liara. Not everyday you get an asari obsessed over you to the point of going through hell to get your remains back from the Shadow Broker. Although I am getting a bit more fond of Ashley as of late...maybe it's because I'm a male and naturally I wanna wreck that. I mean, Ashley...that figure...DAMN! I bet she ****s like a tiger too.

Also, why not just have them both?

I guess Bioware disn't like the idea of two timing back in ME1, but I mean they both dig Shepard so uh...when you have Reapers killing everything, Council/Alliance being ultra ******, cereal stealing Kai Leng who wants your Lucky Charms cause he's too cheap to buy his own, a hell of a plot to build due to ME2's...I won't go there. You all get what I'm saying.

If you want both, play Jade Empire.

Though, it's *spoilers*, and not everyone is into that.

^^^B)

Jade Empire: like Dragon Age but with kung-fu, threesomes, and arguable racism.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and shump sequences. Seriously why did Bioware stop doing that. The kung-fu, threesomes, and minigames, not the racism.

Jade Empire was so good, man. You don't even understand.

Now, the only thing it only did ok on was morals. The two philosophies, while defined really well at the beginning, aren't usually shown well through gameplay. Granted, there are some good CF choices, but they're overshadowed by the "super evil" (extreme) CF choices. And there weren't really very many (if any, really) extreme OP choices either, while OP was done very nicely.

Please. The reason Liara has you do stuff and Ashley doesn't is because unlike Ashley, she's actually in Mass Effect 2. Duh.
Ashley basically becomes a Spectre and promoted based solely on her association with Shepard. Could she have done so on her own? Debatable. Was the process catalyzed by her mere involvement with Shepard? Irrefutable. Ashley was basically stuck, career-wise, until Shepard showed up.

He also saved her life (on Eden Prime and Horizon), he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I concede that unlike Liara, who personally handed Shepard to Cerberus knowing what they intended to do to him, the shock for Ashley would've been greater seeing him alive, but shock is shock. A revelation like this usually incites jubilation, rather than immediate condemnation. Because face it, Shepard has worked with or done less scrupulous things before than utilize the vast resources of a terrorist organization to save thousands of innocent lives.

More over it doesn't even really make sense. Ashley and Kaidan both know of Shepard's involvement with Cerberus prior to meeting him. So either they received poor intel, interpreted the intel incorrectly, or had an insufficient amount, they all assumed he was up to no good. The alternative is that they knew Shepard was on the up and up and were too emotional during the meeting and ended up just scolding him. So it seems you have a choice between ignorance and emotional immaturity.

More perplexing is Liara knows too and is actually surprised to see Shepard alive, despite knowing what Cerberus intended to do and being an information broker, she seemed to be the last to know (well, believe). Which is probably a nod to the Cerberus - Alliance connection. Someone tipped the VS. And remember, it's not like Liara just stops whatever she's doing to help you either. She's doing the whole Shadow Broker thing for the greater good/effort against the Reapers, and at the start of ME3 is at Mars with or without Shepard's direction. All the same, she's being proactive, if you want to talk about life outside the romance.

Also consider that neither of them took the time of day to seek Shepard out and confront him themselves, which couldn't have been that hard given everyone with any sources seem to know Shepard is up and about. They didn't even send him an e-mail!

You had me up until this point.

You specifically ask Liara if you can help. She never makes you do anything for her.

I'd say Liara, even if she does seem a bit weird and uncomfortably fast in progressing the relationship (yes, I know about the time dilation), not to mention the personality flip in ME2. The whole fraternization thing with Ashley honestly bugs me even more.
