i guess, as much as i feel like throwing up to say it, ashley's is slightly less hideous so i would say hers
this is simply because liara is the most unbelievable character of mass effect and her relationship is ridiculously stupid. the dialogue, when not utterly nonsensical, makes shepard seem "needy" and "pathetic" which also adds to the unpleasantness of the whole experience.
but uh...yeah... compeling? lol

Liara is multi-faceted, compelling, and crazy hot. Plus, she's the Shadow Broker. Refer to Jack Nicholson's line in "A Few Good Men" regarding women with power.

I never got that feeling, ever. I'd call Jack a liar, but he'd probably find me and kill me in my sleep.

I've come to prefer Miranda, Jack & Tali by a long shot, but of Liara and Ashley - I'd probably choose Ash. I like her and her attitude (though unfortunately she never lives in any of my playthroughs - Kaidan is always the VS for me) and asari in general kind of creep me out now.
Really now? I usually save whoever I sent with the Salarians; even if the bomb doesn't go off, if the anti air tower isn't down, the Normandy isn't coming; even if the bomb doesn't go off, the Council will send in a fleet to deal with it (as the Salarians requested).

I just personally think Kaidan has a better story arc as the VS and I like him better as a character *shrug*. Not that I hate Ashley or anything. But I always send her with the salarians and go back for Kaidan at the bomb site.

I really can't stand to listen to anything liara has to say. She is the very definition of dull and boring. I also find her creepy obsession with shepard disturbing.
She does sound a bit too ethereal.
I think her obsession is endearingly awkward.

Come ME2 Liara's "devotion" is more than a little creepy to me, especially if I didn't romance her that playthrough. Ashley's character pretty much gets the shaft, so there isn't a whole lot of redeeming quality to her appearance in the game.
For me, LotSB is the only time I've ever liked Liara but it isn't really fair to compare Liara, who got a DLC all to herself, to Ashley, who got Horizon.
Ultimately I'd say neither. If I can't have Tali or Samara, I don't romance anyone. I avoid/skip anything to do with Ashley or Liara in ME1 and pay cursory attention to them in ME2.
Oh, and before you say it, I know Tali's romance scene was awkward. I also skipped it the first time I did it and had to reload a save. I like Tali outside of romance, which is why I romance her, but some of that dialog was just annoying to me.

My canon Shepard already chose Kaidan over Ash, and romanced Miranda in ME2. If Liara (or Tali?) turn out to be better in ME3, I'd dump Miranda straight off the bat.
Besides, Miranda can't have children.

While I respect Knightnblu and his rights to express his own opinions, this post kind of makes me sad. But not due to a hostile desire to respond to it and violently defend against it. But rather because I no longer have such a desire.
What saddens me most about this post is the fact that, as much as it kills me to admit it, it is technically 'correct'. It saddens me because I know that when looking at it from an 'objective' standpoint, Ashley is so far the 'worst' of the love interests in that she's the only one who responds to Shepard with hostility and then for the rest of the entirety of Mass Effect 2 drops off the face of the Earth and save for a few fleeting remarks and comments is never mentioned again and a lot of extended media tries to do everything in it's power to make you forget she ever even existed.
That really upsets me, it saddens and annoys me because Ashley was (and consistently remains) my favorite female character and aside from one minor playthrough where I romanced Jack, she's my only love interest in all my playthroughs of Mass Effect 1 and 2. I guess what it comes right down to is that in the world of getting to choose who your preferred ficitonal girlfriend is, I chose Ashley and she remains my choice. Even if the game canon itself is against me.
The only thing giving me hope is the idea that the VS romance arc is a three act structure and that therefore Mass Effect 1 was the 'introduction', Mass Effect 2 was the 'conflict' and Mass Effect 3 would therefore be the 'resolution'. All the same though, no matter how good the third act might be (and to Bioware's credit the dialogue in romance for Ashley in the script is very good and does a lot of justice to the character), it won't make the second act any less, well, sh*t. To put it simply.
For a while I used to justify or be an apologist for the scene in question. But not anymore, I still defend Ashley and will consistently romance her but the scene itself I can't defend. Nor can I blame anyone who decides Horizon was 'it' and that they want nothing more to do with the VS after it. That said, I think I apply to same train of thought of people like iakus.
That the writing was so terrible, so balls to the wall nuts and defying of anything resembling logic that it was like watching a clip from The Room. And therefore I can't on a personal level hold Ashley responsible. Just pray that someone at Bioware can work their magic and rescue the character and relationship from the terrifying grips of the BS monster.
So yes I guess thinking about it, Liara is on a technical level the 'better' romance. She has present appearances in all three games, can't die, is central to the plot, has her own comic and is depicted as above and beyond the standard call of loyal to Shepard. I can't fault people for finding all of that appealling.
That said, to me at least 'better content' is not the same as 'compelling', as great as all of Liara's stuff is, she herself is not compelling as a love interest to me. I don't hate her but she is not my 'type' and no matter how much amazing stuff she does she isn't going to become 'my type'.
My type is the sexy military tomboy with a love of poetry, family and guns, and no matter how much crap she does or has happen to her in the plot, that ain't changing. I made my choice to stick to her and see it through no matter what, not because I was forced but because I feel compelled to do so. Because no matter what, Ashley is my choice. Not even a thousand Horizons could change that.
I can't fault you if you see it any other way and I mean you no offence be you Liara fan or VS non-fan, but this is the way I see it.
P.S Also it would be remiss of me to not mention that Ashley gets a proper very detailed and articulate action figure from Play Arts made in her image whereas currently Liara just has the creepy-ass jailbaitey bishojou statue. So HA, that's one thing Ashley has over Liara.

I like this statement.
So it's Ashley for me because:
- she's the type of a woman I'd date any time - she's beautiful.
- she's straight forward and doesn't go down the "political correctness" route - which is quite refreshing
- Ash is honest
- her romance feels natural - it grows from comrades (co-workers) over friendship to a romance.
- she has a background: family, hobbies ...
- I love her poetry ^^
- drama that may kill for some that relationship but also strenghtens it.
Doesn't mean Liara has it not, but that's the stuff that drives me towards Ashley.
V-rex has a point too - although I can't fully concur Ashley's romance is the worst. If it follows the three-arc-structure (which seems to be the case - leaked scripts) it may raise Ashley's romance to the same level as Liara's. Of course, I can see the nerdrage once more if that's the case ...

I don't hate her. People try and defend Ashley because of the emotional attachment they have towards her, but what I say is devoid of all emotion. It simply is. She's a racist. She expresses her dislike of the council races, she speaks of humanity needing to rely on themselves, she didn't like the idea of Wrex and Garrus poking around the ship's vital systems. Friends to Shepard and allies to humanity. The war with the Turians was decades ago. Substitute any of the alien races in her speech with a black dude or a mexican dude, and any sensible human who could rub two brain cells together would call that person a racist.
I don't know why the flames of this issue are constantly burning here. There are people stating fact with mountains of evidence, and there are people who stick their fingers in their ears and go "LA LALA LALALAL LA LA" out of blind devotion. It's fine if you dig her, but don't pretend that the warts aren't bulging out there for all to see.
Kay?
The poetry is hot, I love intelligent women. But, I can't look past the other stuff.
