I've had more fun playing a few hours of the origin stories in DAO than  the entire play time of Fallout 3, and it's only the beginning.  Take note Bethesda, running around an empty world with nothing of significance to do does not make a game.

What has happened to RPGs/adventure in the last few years?  I mean FF7-9, Ocarina of Time , Shenmue, KOTOR, all classics.  What is there now?  Elder Scrolls, Fallout, both of which are boring  when it comes down to it, and various well rated graphical showcases/set piece "games" (*cough*MGS4*cough*Uncharted*cough*).

It's been bleak if you're a PS3 owner.

I will never understand the specific obsession with FF-7? Seriously it was good. It was not THAT good. That being said, yes DAO destroys any and all competition and needs some kind of award. Bioware did a phenomenal job.

This is quite true really, it's been a while since a really solid story based rpg has been out.

Although I do give Bethesda some credit Oblivion was fun for me but not because of the story, guess I just enjoyed getting lost in the woods in fantasy-land *shrug*. At any rate I feel they improved the story telling aspect (and making half-decent looking faces) in Fallout 3.

All in all however Dragon Age is exactly what I've been needing for some time; a well polished rpg with an epic and engaging storyline.

It had really good parts but honestly aside from the storyline which was great, it was just like all the others. I still thought 8 > 7 but to each their own.

That there's still obsessive fans this many years later tells you something.  There's something more than sum-of-parts about it that no other game (I've heard of) has been able to replicate, and its got nothing to do stats, textures or game size (in terms of play area) and everything to do with story, art direction and the  er, undefinable.  You can poke holes in the gameplay,  the basic linear J-RPG nature all you like, but they stay in your memory.  Chronos Cross, and even Star Ocean 2 from that era were also pretty good.

The best thing that can be said of FF7 was that it was better than every FF which followed. Take that as you will.

the first few games from the FF serie where epic for its time, but after FF4-5 it became copy paste owrk. maybe its still epic for fans of the serie, but for a person who is great fan of all kind of rpg and adventure games.. the freedom and gameplay in the latest FF games where baddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.

DA:O really is the greatest story based game these days ,that i really needed to keep me occupied :P

Every time I think about buying that game, they announce a new version of it coming soon. Consequentially, I've never purchased it.

Red-Cell did hit a mark there, Witcher was awesome but it would of been cooler if you could of created your own Geralt like character, hence, the Grey Wardens and DAO's awesomeness!

The Witcher Enhanced came out, it was a free update to those that bought the original version, so much content and for FREE, it doesnt matter when you bought the game, you still got the content, I suggest picking it up and giving it a run, its by an independant polish developer based on a popular polish series of books (yay! my countryman have contributed to the community!). Combat, Inventory and Crafting (alchemy) system is something that may drive you mad, but the story and the setting and the lore will keep you hooked and wanting more....oh and the sex, cant forget the sex...lots of sex, I wouldnt call it a masterpiece, but the developers poured their soul into that game because it was based around their own pop culture, not something corporate and shoddily put together, and if there was a problem with it or there just wasn't "enough", CD Projekt (the developer) sacrificed their time to release something for free to their community that was massive, and that in itself deserves kudos and at least a nod to the game.

Fallout 3 has stuff happening in it. Although it's mostly a nuclear wasteland (d'oh), there's lot's of tiny little things here and there if you scout the area.

Oblivion for me was a bit boring though. I kind of like a game that's more scripted. I liked morrowind though.. for some reason. I think it had more of the wonderous adventuring quality to it, you were mostly lost and never knew what kind of monsters were lurking behind the corner.

Still the best rpg's still in my opinion are strictly narrated with some freedom of choice here and there.. well kinda like dragon age, really.

I can quickly explain.

FF7 had a decent story, not great, but decent.
FF7 had an interesting cast of characters.
FF7 had an open ending, not Open Ended, but Open Ending. At the end you could turn around, crawl out of the crater, and still had plenty to do. Unlike many Square games, you had full access to the game at the end, you weren't locked out of anything.
FF7 had an interesting and mysterious villain who you kind of couldn't help rooting for.
FF7 had uber difficult bosses such as Emerald Weapon, and some epic summons.

What more could you want

There was no malice intended for The Witcher. I just hate to buy a product and then discover a superior version at the same price. I'm all for independent game development since that's where the most innovation takes place.

100% agree and this is not a plug
but the Witcher Enhanced Edition is only 19.99 now and the directors cut is out which restores the true meaning of adult in a game , full frontal nudity and conversations.. etc. but that not why the game is good. it was overlooked even tho it won RPG of the year!!

And all those "new versions" are absolutely free for download from official site for all owners of any edition of the game.

It may not explain your passion, but in terms of game design, it points to things that sets FF7 apart from many other Square games. In particular the Open Ending and mysterious villain were very important, if the game had a closed ending after leading you through like a mule on a rope, it wouldn't have had the resell value nor developed such a huge cult fanbase, and without a cool villain the game wouldn't have been half as interesting. It would still be popular but in the way that FF8 and FF9 were popular.

You know I love Jade Empire, but at the end I was disappointed at the fact that I was basically a Prisoner of the Palace. What if I wanted to go turn in a quest in the imperial city? I mean once I landed at the Palace the game should open up, not for the sake of story but for the sake of game play.
