There's only 2 ways to be a commissioned officer: Bachelor's degree or did something way, way, way incredible to get a commission from enlisted. It's only been 2 years between ME1 and ME2, and assuming the events in ME2 spanned a year, it's unrealistic she'd get to the rank of Ensign and even less to Lt. Commander.

Ranks don't work the same way as in, say, the US military:

ENLISTED
Serviceman 3rd class/Private 2nd class
Serviceman 2nd class/Private 1st class
Serviceman 1st class/Corporal

NCOs
Service Chief
Gunnery Chief
Operations Chief

OFFICERS
2nd Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Staff Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander
Staff Commander
Captain/Major
Rear Admiral/General
Admiral
Fleet Admiral

That said, people have asked this question for months.

Short answer: we don't know, and even though it's pretty implausible, it did happen.

I'd just suggest a combination of successful work in Alliance spec-ops, and PR reasons.

It's not about the US military but military protocol in general. Common requirement around the world is you need a Bachelor's degree or did something crazily incredible to earn a commision after being in the enlisted ranks. This is the same Hollywood mistake about not knowing how military ranks and commission work.

Anderson's influence and her contribution in Shepard's mission and dedication to the Alliance. It along with her eventual Spectre status are mostly politcally inclined.

And dude, its just a game with a fictitious military. Common requirement means little in ME-verse.

Or maybe a guy who is either an Admiral or the member of a galactic government was aware that she was part of a team of seven who saved the galaxy and thought she could get the job done and pulled some strings.

Maybe a field promotion for whatever she was doing between Horizon and ME3? Who knows.

Yeah, I'm not saying I support the idea...

It's even worse when you realise that she was only an Operations Chief in ME2 (which makes perfect sense, being promoted after the Battle of the Citadel).

Then she somehow rose four ranks in about six months (between Horizon and ME3), and became an enlisted officer, at the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Alenko only rose one rank between ME2 and ME3, which is far more believable.

This makes three ranks in three years... doubt that it's normal. His description on site helps, but I think it would fit more if, considering his new rank and occupation, he would stay commanding biotics instead of joining Shepard where his high rank means really nothing.

Defending the Horizon is not enough to earn a commission, neither is saving the Citadel according to, well, current real world military protocols. i.e. Capturing Mount Suribachi during WWII doesn't earn the Marines and Sailors a commission.

How the hell did Ashley get to 2nd Lt. (NOT Lt. Commander) without a degree?

Answer here.

She got to Lt. Commander, as ME3 site states. I think it was said even in leaked demo.

Last minute change just like that Miller guy in BF3. She was revealed to be 2nd Lt a few months ago IIRC.

Yep. She's a Lieutenant Commander, equal to Shepard's rank.

If she did, she's dead to me.  I did all the work there, not her.

I don't see why shep can't get a promotion to staff commander.  He/She will still be commander shepard.

A promotion does seem... overdue.

Here's the demo video from three days ago showing Williams as a Lieutenant Commander:

Maybe some of the rank skipping could be seen as retroactive promotions. She probably would have been higher than Gunnery Chief if her grandfather's legacy wasn't holding her down.

She got the rank to show that she is on equal footing with with Cmdr. Shepard. Remember Ash is mostly about military protocol, and had a hard time with opening up to Shepard until the end. I like that she on equal rank with my Shep, means it will be just that much easier to have a relationship while still in military service.

Guess she simply got promoted to the officer's ranks because she earned it. And she took some extra steps because of her outstanding performance in the field (past two years we don't anything about).

Lets hope someone explains how Ash jumped five ranks.

Field promotion, by an admiral David Anderson more than likely.
