You guys make me want to try BG2. It's hard going back to lesser graphics though, now that we've been spoiled with modern graphics.

Lesser/dated != poor quality

The scenery in BGII is stunning, sometimes awe-inspiring.

No, I'm with the other guy here.  I tried going back to play BG2 again not so long ago and it was just impossible to get into it.  I already knew the characters, I already knew the story, the AD&D v2.0 combat system still sucked, and the graphics just made me want to punch kittens because I'm so used to 3D engines and pretty shadows and sparkly effects.

And really, who thought that AD&D v2.0 was suitable for CRPGs?  Especially with those damn kits!  Bah!

The Sony Network was selling the download of FFVII for $10. I bought it, thinking I'd have fond trips down memory lane.

Yes, the game is still memorable, but my 1080p TV does not treat the Playstation 1 graphics kindly. I actually wish I had an old crappy TV to play it on, because, as a kid, you didn't notice the jagged edges and polygons as much that are painfully visible now.

2D games are not as painful to play as early 3D graphics. If someone is able to convert BG and BG2 to DA:O graphics, you will be loved by everyone, I think. Unless you screw it up... but then you'll have an angry mob at your disposal!

speaking of creating a game world from scratch... Jade Empire and Mass Effect were better games. This game is more of a spiritual successor to NWN2 and than BG2. ive stopped playing DA everyday...ive become bored.

Hm. In my opinion "Jade Empire" displayed some glowing embers of the RPG bonfires that I've come to expect from BioWare. It wasn't a bad game and I enjoyed it well enough yet at the end of the day I do think/feel it was lacking compared to "BG II" and "DA:O". I know that at least one BioWare member considers it their best work (or at least did until DA:O was released). Tastes differ I suppose.

I feel this game blows away BG, but I never put BG on a pedestal either. It was a really good RPG that was saddled with an awkward game system that was not very well suited for computer adaptation. BG 2 in particular suffered from the god-awful mage mechanics that D&D becomes at high level (combat revolving entirely around insta-death spells and insta-death counters and insta-death-counter counters).

BG never made me sweat over a decision. It never made me feel bad about a character leaving my party. It certainly never inspired me to reroll and play again immediately after I finished it. It was a fun RPG with lots of side quests. The characters were interesting but shallow. No surprises. The villain was pretty much just a big evil guy trying to take over the world. Nothing special besides David Warner's awesome voice.

i think that at the end of the day, these are completely different games designed for different generation of gamers. Although DA does remind me in many ways BG2, truth is it is not and it was never intended to be a BG2 clone as far as i know.

I think DA will take us a long way, the history will become thicker, the feats and skills will grow more, perhaps epic classes and skills/spells will come in, more exotic fantastic locations.Maker knows what happens in the utter depths of the deep roads, will we ever visit the black city?

I am looking forward for the gryphons to fly again. There are so many things that can happen, so many places to visit, and i am sure Bioware can think of a lot more.

I am missing my epic spells from NWN. I believe BW will compensate :)

I would suggest people should not compare the two awesome games, and simply enjoy them for what they are.

cheers!

Good luck!  You'll have EA, Atari, and Wizard of the Coast on your ass if you attempt to recreate BG2.

Anyway, FFVII does look pretty bad on my new TV.  It's not as bad as my SNES, though!  I tried playing some old Mario 3 the other day and I just couldn't take it after an hour or so.  Ick!
