Are unlockables really needed for multiplayer?

Every game is full of them. Why? I remember that unlockables weren't really a big deal when multiplayer FPS first became popular during the Perfect Dark/Golden Eye, and Quake/Unreal Tournament (the console and PC shooter repsectively) era. But now it's like devs think it's a requirement, and unlickables are just such a crutch that MP gaming gets reallt inaccessible really fast if you came late and most people except you have all of the advantages.

I like it, gives you something to work towards.

No, you can do just fine with your starting Assault Rifle and your class skills.

This is very much my own opinion,

I believe that the scope of things has changed a lot since goldeneye, quake, UT etc. Something like BF where you have a ton of different options available to you will (I believe) leave a person in the mindset of "I like this I am going to stick with it" instead of the mindset of "Oh cool I unlocked this I am going to try and see if it works for me". It allows people to fully enjoy the content more so. You know you had a friend that once they figured out that oddjob was cheap in goldeneye always used him and then it turned into a race to see who could get him so they wouldnt.

Edit:
The games you listed are all pvp based, so cant really apply to ME

You had things to work towards in the old MP games. The only difference between the way that the older games did items and the newer ones is that the old ones had respawn points where you could find weapons and power ups that you were looking for. So for example you had this power up in Quake qhich increased your damage output by four times, rockt launchers, plasma rifles, and they were all located in fixed positions so that every game you played on that map you knew where to find everything and they always reappeared after a certain amount of time.

So the old games respawning item system actually added a lot of depth because of how powerful they were, the fixed positioning and the time factor. Unlocks are just something that you grind towards and they are an unfair disadvantage to people who are new to the game.

Depends on the type of player you are. Sure, you can argue that it's a cheap way of encouraging you to play more to unlock stuff. Or, you could look on the bright side and see it as encouraging variety in loadout and class. But then again, if you unlocked everything from the start you'd probably have complaining there's no progression and that it's not RPG enough.^_^

Unlocks are completely unacceptable. If I bought a game, I want access to the whole game.

You do have access to it. You just have to play. This is like complaining that you can't have rank-6 Singularity when your character is level 1, or complaining that you can't use the Graal shotgun when escaping Earth.

It's an RPG, isn't that the point?

I haven't experienced it myself yet so I can't truly comment, and I don't play online shooters so I don't really know what's standard and what's a no-no, but it seems the 'random unlockables' system is getting some serious flak from an otherwise-receptive reaction to multiplayer. To me it's a nifty idea though, kinda like opening a booster pack of Magic: The Gathering cards or something, only... better.

Yes I think so. I would like hard to earn weapons.

Say goodbye to the entire RPG genre then, since you don't have access to all your powers, abilities and armor when you start it.

I don't mind unlocks in MP much, since they're actually a compelling incentive for playing it, with the promise of reward hanging on every match. As with all things however, how well the unlock system works all comes down to the game's execution. Unlocks should grant players bonuses, while at the same time not make higher-end unlocks be the end-all be-all options and thus make higher-tier players stronger.

It's a false sense of achievement. But it also invites people to try more stuff.

It's only a problem when the unlocks are better than the stock items like in CoD. Team Fortress 2 unlocks, while annoying, aren't the end of the world because any new person has immediate access to very good weaponry.

You have a point. Especially random unlocks are extremely stupid.

The weapons and classes we have access to at the beginning are all pretty darn solid. Getting rid of the unlocks just makes it so that there's no longer any RPG in the multiplayer and it just ends up being Gears of War Horde mode with powers.

Not to mention the fact that the weapons are balanced against each other with the weight mechanic. Yes, the Mattock might be better than the Avenger, but you lose out on the weight penalty.

Also, the idea of "new players being disadvantaged" makes no sense. If you played or watched any of the multiplayer, you'd know its coop and that the team's success matters just as much or more than the individual's accomplishments. Someone who's a lvl 1 playing with a bunch of lvl 20's is going to do a lot better and gain faster than a group of lvl 1's.

I am against the random unlock mechanic. But besides that, I'm going to chalk this up to another Tetris troll thread.

I agree tetris, unlockables do suck. Unlickables, on the other hand...

Most weapons and mods can level up, though.

While I think it's a pretty moronic way to unlock characters, I don't think it's that bad when it comes to unlocking weapons.

I don't mind unlockables as long as you can get by with starter guns. Like in CoD, you can totaly manage with them.

Well I think it's the unlocking of the characters is demo only, since we have to "recruite" them first in the SP 'til they are available in MP.

I like it. It doesn't cost any extra money, and it gives you something to work towards. I think it is awesome to have thing you don't have to pay real money for.

So what do people like you do after unlocking everything? Just get over the game and move on to the next one? Just keep on playing as normal? Play less? Would you be attracted to the co-op in the first place if there were no unlockables? Defining unlockables quite loosely here. That means rankings, characters, items, levels and achievement/trophies.

Keep playing. I don't play to unlock stuff.
