Every game is full of them. Why? I remember that unlockables weren't really a big deal when multiplayer FPS first became popular during the Perfect Dark/Golden Eye, and Quake/Unreal Tournament (the console and PC shooter repsectively) era. But now it's like devs think it's a requirement, and unlickables are just such a crutch that MP gaming gets reallt inaccessible really fast if you came late and most people except you have all of the advantages.
Are unlockables really needed for multiplayer?

This is very much my own opinion,
I believe that the scope of things has changed a lot since goldeneye, quake, UT etc. Something like BF where you have a ton of different options available to you will (I believe) leave a person in the mindset of "I like this I am going to stick with it" instead of the mindset of "Oh cool I unlocked this I am going to try and see if it works for me". It allows people to fully enjoy the content more so. You know you had a friend that once they figured out that oddjob was cheap in goldeneye always used him and then it turned into a race to see who could get him so they wouldnt.
Edit:
The games you listed are all pvp based, so cant really apply to ME
