I'll make this a more reserved reply than I made my earlier thread (which got closed due to overeager moderation).

There are a few things in this demo that absolutely did not work for me. Most notably the section on Earth for a series of reasons:

1) Conversation is wooden. I didn't understand why the Council was asking Shepard what to do. The answer Shepard gave were uninspired one-liners that resolved nothing. Why is the council in despair when it should be ordering a planet into defense? Why does that guy ask Shepard what they should do, when the answer "fight" is so obvious it does not even deserve to be asked? Why is there no real leadup? I didn't feel any urgency in this section.

2) Everything moved from setpiece to setpiece, which made it a stale affair. I am not saying this to be bothersome. I'm saying this because I feared for poor writing in ME3 after what happened to DA2, and this demo has confirmed some of my fears. First there is the "oh my god the reapers are here" part with the council, but since its not the citadel council the players are robbed of any chance to feel vindicated for their treatment in ME1 and 2. We don't know who these councilmen are, why we should care about their fear, or why they're so horribly inept. We don't even know what they're going to be doing. Wasn't this supposed to be a trial? If not, then what was the purpose of this? The hallways walls still read Courtroom Access, so as a player I have no clue whether I was talking to judges or councilmen or anyone.

Then comes the part where the Reapers land. They start destroying a nondescript city that we are given no description of. Where is it? I'm serious, I have no connection to this city. All I see are sterile white buildings being destroyed by giant alien robots. Any chance for the player to feel awed or saddened is lost, because we never get pulled into the action. It's a background setpiece that does not involve the player, and we are not given sufficient reason to care. The trailer was good because we saw the Big Ben and the Eye of London. The beginning of ME3 is bad because prefab skyscrapers in a generic future city without a name incite no feelings.

The same is true for the bit with the child later on. Who is this child? An opportunity is wasted when Shepard first sees him playing with his airplane to give the kid a family. Why doesn't he have one? Why is this one lone kid running around without any supervision? Why doesn't he have a name? Who cares about "Child". Why not call him Eric, and why not have Eric at least play in that little garden under the supervision of his mother? And then why not add that mother to the bit where Eric dies, leaving her standing amidst the rubble? Who cares about Child. Child is as alien to me as the city he lives in. Any attempts at evoking sympathy from the audience fall flat, because the audience is not fooled into believe that this is a human being. For all we know, he's an extremely advanced japanese robot. I don't know.

Then there's the part where the Reaper shows up and destroys the refugee pods. Why not the Normandy? This Reaper must be the dumbest Reaper ever, because it does not act on the information that must surely be in the collective Reaper database about the Normandy and how often it has thwarted Reaper plans. Instead, it kills Child the Japanese Robot.

In the meanwhile Shepard watches the war evolve like she's a spectator in a theatre. Refugee transports get blown up RIGHT NEXT to the Normandy, but Shepard just looks pained, shrugs and walks in. Really? No urgency? No commanding Joker to make it fast? Instead, Shepard spends forever in some strained dialog with Anderson that really couldn't have been held at a more ridiculous location. Why there? Why not earlier? Why did Anderson not communicate during the earlier bit in the building where they climbed past a chasm? Instead he went on about "oh my god people are dying." You know that there's a classic adiago in writing: show it, don't tell it. If thousands of people are dying, I need some proof. Anderson talking about it in a setpiece building demonstrates as little to me as Anon Kid dying or as this sterile looking city getting destroyed. I have seen not one person die when Anderson says this, despite his claims.

The demo gets better in the later section with the Krogan Female, because you get into typical ME gameplay which redeems the game. But I am under no illusion that the writing throughout ME3 is going to be any better than what the opening tutorial sequence has shown us. It turned out exactly as I feared.

Someone needs to send this to Bioware and force them to memorize everything word.  Couldn't have said it better myself if my life depended on it.

I second that.

Well, i beat the demo twice, second time I tried to optimize the settings to ME2 settings. Sadly I noticed - and feeled in game - the graphics is lost something. I can't tell, but something is not just not get better - which I didn't care - but also get worst. I hope this and the lack of additional dialogues, investigate lines are also caused by the demo.

Otherwise it wasn't bad, show the beginning then a mission to feel the new stuffs. Like ME2 demo. I stil have to wait Friday with the MP. And whatever say anyone: I still gonna buy the game to complete the saga. Just feel a bit... dissapointed. :(

- who the hell is James Vega (at intro) and joining my Team without i knewing him?

As I said in my post, I really hope there is more exposition. We've been playing Shepard for two games and we have no clue who this guy is. There is a reason we are confused at the beginning of ME2... Shepard was asleep/dead for two years. This time around, we just don't know what the hell is going on while Shepard seems to be in the know. That, plus the limited dialogue options puts a huge disconnect between the player and the character. Not good.

Just play through the demo again with a female Shepard for kicks. The animation when she is walking in the beginning looks terrible. Female Shepard walks like a guy, as though she is accomodating muscles she doesn't have, with arms swinging wide. The rest of the demo doesn't have this problem but maybe because she doesn't walk that much. I hope female Shepard has her own animation instead of using male Shepard animation from the neck down.

I didn't notice this the first time around, but standing around while a door is hacked is boring. Others have said it. If a companion is doing it, it isn't so bad. A mini-gamei might be better, but it might also break the flow of gameplay. I guess hacking doors when the story or ambience doesn't involve any time pressure isn't a good addition. Scanning, forcing doors to open, and other events are just fine.

The CGI integrates very well in the game. I love them.

I am not picky about ME gameplay in general, but the heavy melee attack for male Shepard feels a bit unresponsive, maybe due to his animation. The female version feels better. The inclusion of more melee is a great idea though.

The expanded skill tree isn't anything to brag about, but it doesn't break anything from ME 2 and it's a little better, so I am happy with it. I wanted to test out weapon customization too but didn't find a way to do that in the demo.

More gameplay impressions when MP becomes available.

Overall, I am still satisfied with the game, but perhaps the demo isn't the best of ideas. Mass Effect's main appeal doesn't come through in the demo. It's too easy to judge it purely on gameplay, which, to be honest, isn't outstanding for any mass effect game.

Overall, it was a good demo. It made me hungry for more. However, there were some problems with it.

Positive:
- Cutscenes and cinematics were well done.
- Enemy AI is markedly improved.
- The increased options when levelling up powers and the way the percentages are displayed visually is good.
- Shepard's armour and FemShep's face look wonderful.
- Fewer defenses on Insanity means biotics are no longer crippled.
- The music is great.
- There looks to be some nice extra synergy with powers now.
- What I saw of the extra squadmate banter is nice.

Negative:
- The combat running animations look appalling for anyone but Shepard, because their upper body just doesn't move realistically or in conjunction with their legs. They look like they're gliding along on someone else's legs. (This is my main issue with the demo)

- The beginning of the demo is very abrupt. Shepard already knows Vega? Shepard has already been trialled and had his/her rank stripped? The lack of conversation options exacerbates the feeling of disjointedness. Hopefully there's an earlier scene in the full game where we can talk to Vega about our upcoming hearing or something.

- The continued use of the same keybinding for multiple actions on the PC is perplexing, as is the lack of specific keybound shortcuts like "I for inventory", etc. Why don't you make use of the keyboard?

- The loss of proper ragdolls upon death is noticable and disturbing. Shepard just plops down instantaneously and it looks wrong.

- The lack of high res textures on the PC version is unfortunate. It's understandable for a demo, but I hope you guys release a high res texture pack in an optional patch.

- The enforced 4-gun arsenal in the latter part of the demo really crippled power-reliant classes. Thankfully this is a demo only issue.

Overall, a success. However, I really hope someone at Bioware takes the requests of their fans on the PC to heart and throws us a bone.

Fantastic.

Loved the banter, the cutscenes, the combat (cooldowns aside) and really enjoyed the level design and graphics.

Slightly disappointed with the lack of a trial and the general rushed feeling of the introduction, however.

Overall I think the demo was pretty good. Gives you a good preview of what to come. What was shown of the story and cinematics was great. The music is great (nice to hear some familiar pieces. The new pieces are very emotional and dramatic as well) The combat system feels like ME2 with improved close combat fighting. Can't wait for the final game to come out in a few weeks.

Only two negative things I noticed:

- There's a lack of dialogue options for my taste (I know, it's said to include much more in the final game)
-  two or three times I could hear the characters talk but they didn't move their mouths (especially noticable prior to and during Shepard's trial).

The only thing that saddened me was the constraints of the demo itself. No sniper, no weapon modding, and no armor locker. But oh well it'll all be there in the full game :)

Basically I'm in love with the game. I like how the cinematics and conversations flowed and were far less static (All the walking+talking in the intro was very cool). I like how insanity provides a worthy challenge (seriously, 'dat Atlas). And I like how much better the hair and face textures are, I feel like my custom Shepard looks indisputably good this time. He looks kinda like Adam Jensen lol.

I'm not upset at the 'lack' of dialogue options presented in the demo. The automated dialogue was basically what I'd want Shepard to say anyway, and the points where I get to choose provided me with suitable options. Very pleased with the renegade dialogue especially. I hope there's more options in the rest of the full game, along with investigate opportunities, but I'm sure there will be, or at the very least the options presented will be adequate, so I'm not worried.

And Garrus. I couldn't help but grin when he showed up :D

So the dev team should be proud of their work, imo, it's everything I hoped for and then some :)

Pros
-Music. The composers really outdid themselves. The character creator music is my favorite.
-Graphics. I should say I'm playing on XBOX, and for me I think the graphics are smoother than ME2, but still not "amazing" like Uncharted or something.
-Skill progression. This is exactly what I wanted! The evolutions are great and now we have choice.
-Improved cover system. This will also be a con for me, but the part I liked about the cover system is the roll to and from cover, and being able to quickly change cover positions.
-Enemy AI. This now feels like I'm fighting against intelligent AI, and not the simple "stay in cover, pop head out and shoot, stay in cover" AI from ME2. I also really like how the enemies work together.
-LOOT!! Thank god for bringing back loot. I really hope that wasn't just for the demo.
-Level layout. Now I know this was still a linear combat level, but it felt a little more open than ME2 maps.
-Vanguard combat. I love the changes, and now I plan to do a heavy melee build. Charge, Nova, Melee... so much fun.

Cons
-Dialogue. I seriously can't believe the writers wrote some of these lines. "What do we do?" "We fight or we die, that's the plan" ... some of the stuff is just embarassing.
-The kid. This has been said many different times, but I thought the scene was terribly manipulative and poorly written.
-The intro. No recap? No nothing? Why does the game start with my Shepard being under house arrest, and have the Normandy grounded? Why does the council suddenly summon Shepard to talk about the Reapers? This is just too much. I don't care about Arrival or comics or novels. I want a good recap if events are going to happen without me making choices.
-Ashley's design. She looks TERRIBLE! I had seen some pictures, but it was a shock to see her in game. Really not happy with what they did to her, and its so painfully obvious why they did it. Just disgusting.
-The invasion. I felt nothing. It was just another Hollywood, Michael Bay style event without any emotional connection.
-The combat animations. Everything looks like it's on fast forward, and nothing looks fluid. The combat is fast and fun, but the animations are not good.
-The lip synching and facial animations. A step down from ME1 and ME2.
-Character creator. Seriously lacking, and not that much better than ME2.
-Human NPC designs. 8 years and 3 games later, they still look dumb. All the main characters, Anderson, Sheploo, look amazing, but the other NPCs still look bad. I think it's all about art design. Bioware needs to work on this for the next series.
-Running animation. It isn't terrible, but it looks janky as hell.
-Screwy cover system. Same issue with Mass Effect 2. The cover in general works fine, but there are still plenty of moments of "NO I didnt want to jump over that!!" or "damnit thats not what I wanted to do!"

I've just finished playing and thought it was awesome :). The combat is vastly improved over ME2, and the guns actually sound like futuristic mass acceletor weapons.

That said, I have a couple of little issues I'd love to see changed for the final game.

1. I felt the subtitles were a little too small. I was struggling a little to read them a little when I wanted to be focussing on what was happening in the game. Bringing the font size up what it was in ME2 would be great. Some of my friends who don't speak english natively may have issues with the current size.

2. I also wasn't comfortable with the size of the power menu, especially in mp where the game doesn't pause. Again, increasing it's size (or having the option to) to what it was in ME2 would really help.

Beyond those two little nit picks, I can't think of anything else which needs improving at the moment. Well done Bioware.

It was nice, but it got really chuggy at certain points.

The current power system is slightly better than ME 2's, but the fact that soldiers get "ammo" powers is still annoying. The pacing and flow of combat is much better, and feels "dynamic"(sorry, I couldn't think of a better word), although the enemy appears to lose track of me sometimes, totally ignoring me even though I'm standing out in the open when I'm taking the "flanking" route.

The story pacing of the invasion was.... too quick? I went from telling pencil pushers to get ready, to Rambo, to Commander Bloody Shepard in the time it takes a hippo to fart. Which ain't short, but it's not exactly long either. Anderson was talking as though he'd been waging guerilla warfare with the Reapers for months within seconds. And the video feeds from the rest of the world, the UK comes in with visual, then gets cut off. Suddenly every news channel on earth has coverage, and husks are running about. Really? It'slikewhatshouldhavetakensomethingatleastanhourgettingcrammedintotwentyminutesoffindingoutthatkidcan'tbesavedbyagalacticbadassandrunstoanopenareatogetshotdownbyareaper.Really.

edit : shadows and lighting seem to be hit and miss. Shep looked like a charcoal stick when talking to the kid. That kid. The opening sequence showing the VS, shadows fell really oddly.

Please, oh please, don't make us watch that "poignant" shuttle destruction every time we replay. We get it and it's an unnecessary tear jerker moment after the first time through.

Otherwise, I've now played it 3 times. Looking forward to the 6th. Too bad I couldn't get a Collector's Edition for the XBOX.

Default graphics are atrocious on my 1920x1080 display and graphics options are hidden under "Extras", resulting in an "ugly as hell" first impression.

Hate the heavy melee omni blade and riot shield troopers (cf nerf now).

As for the premise, and human stupidity (Anderson staying to "fight" after a Reaper casually shot down a dreadnought with one burst)... well, that's neither exactly new nor specific to the demo.

Edit: Oh, and if you have to have a screen with text explaining the context for the next mission while it is being loaded, it might be a good idea to pause for user input and not assume that our computers are sufficiently slow to allow us to read all the text

My one critical issue is Cover. I HATE cover now. Hate it with a passion. It makes me rage while playing, to the point that I'm honestly considering canceling my pre-order.

The cover system in ME2 was amazing. I could use cover in the ways I wanted while also being able to maneuver as I wanted. Face the camera away from cover and use W+Space to move, you moved away from cover. Now? You vault over the cover in front of you. Why am I moving in a direction my camera isn't facing? Using A or D and space to sprint out of cover is also gone now. Now you do some type of roll to get into cover next to you, which leaves me just as vulnerable to attack as I was before.

Cover, as it currently stands, is a core mechanic that is horribly broken and a complete hinderance.

You really REALLY need to include controller support for the PC version, people like PC games because they have more customization Mods, saved game hacks whatever you want, but... this game is obviously designed for a controller set up, so why not just put it in from one of the console versions. I really, really needs it.

The demo looks good and all.

Just one point I would like to see changed is the 'normal' running speed of Shepard. It's probably going to focused mainly on cover to cover combat and all but the speed when moving from one place to another just feels like a slug's pace without sprinting. And I have a feeling that if that's the normal speed for movement without sprinting the sprint button is going to massively abused to the point of annoyance in my opinion. Cause it just feels like you're walking with a running animation.

If this has been said before I'm sorry I didn't take the time to read through 16 pages of replies

Horrible, not worth my money. Bioware no longer creates the games we love. No dialogue, Crappy combat/gameplay mechanics, and just a lost vision for a once great universe. 0/10 Never buying a Eaware game again

Pros:
- Animations are crisp, the running, walking shooting, talking, it all looks good to me.  Graphically speaking it looks better than ME2, and I'm surprised you could even pull that off.
- Sound is amazing.  Guns have nice noises to them, and the music is spot on.  I -did- notice that, during the beta leak, in the Earth portion, Overlord music was used when taking on the waves of Cannibals.  In the demo now, it's a different piece of music.  Was Overlord used as a placeholder?
- Gameplay wise, solid as ever.  Wish the 4-gun loadout wasn't enforced for the second half, but it gave me a good feel for how the guns worked.  Power upgrades were solid as well.
- Voice-acting is spot on, save for Wrex sounding a wee-bit awkward during the second half.  I've never done a run with Wreav, so I assume that's the "Why is Wreav talking on the radio?" think folks were talking about.

Cons:
- Spacebar for both sprint/roll/cover/interact seems...a bit odd.  I'm use to E being interact (with ME1 and 2), and Spacebar being my pause button.  So it's a bit jarring to suddenly shift gears from that to this.  I'm sure I'll have time to get over it.
- Demo was too short.  A shame, but it was fun to try out some of the different powers and combinations of powers.  But I can only do it so many times before I feel bored.
- Character creator seems...off?  I used the face-code for my Shepard, and she looks...okay?  Something seems a bit off about her and I'm not entirely sure what it is.

Still, for a demo it was amazing.  Can't wait for the 6th!

I've played several times the demo and the overall impression is not good.
-All the beginning in the earth is very very poor written and designed.
-The "kid" thing is totally out of place for me in this game,it's a pretty cheap and ridiculous trick in fact, not worthy of any good writing imho.you're a veteran soldier,a specter, maybe even ruthless and renegade.you've seen a lot of soldiers and comrades dying, even now, hundreds of thousands of people are dying, and 10 min ago almost all the humans in the room died in front of you,and now suddenly you're gonna cry for a cheap kid you find 2 min ago?,no way.
-what the .... happenend with Ashley?she looks like a tranny now, even more like a men than anything else.
-Only 2 response options instead of 3?not a good idea bioware.
-Why not support for x360 pad?
-The GUI is too little now,it's very hard to see what you are selecting if you're playing at 1080p.
-The face of fem shepard is strange,i dont know how to describe it,but it didnt feel right. And her "face performance" is much worst than the male shepard.

I loved ME1 and 2,and i'm eagerly awaiting ME3.C'mon Bioware bring it on and make an epic trilogy.

The good:

Music

the bad:

-Choices in conversation are ...meaningless you get the same outcome he just speaks a different line
-Animation when running
-Writing....
I mean do you really expect anyone to believe that the freaking Earth Defense Force actually had no plan in case of a alien invasion in a universe where it's known that there are aliens with massive fleets around and have been in a war with one of them and let's not even mention bunch of Earth war experiences?

Also the kid ...I mean who is he? Why is it so focused on him and what happens to him ...when we don't even know who he is and he doesn't have any emotional connection to the characters we know? For the amount of time given to him I don't consider him more than just a bunch of pixels. You could just cut out that entire part and save us the cutscene time.

And the third thing about writing..reapers are as Shepard says in speach : smarter more intelligent better ect than us. Then why does that reaper target a shuttle with 10 people instead of a freaking NORMANDY?

Also everything feels ....to confined it's a corridor shooter again. Fire your stage makers.

Oh also space button does to many things and Shepard glues to walls like crazy. I know it;s a console port but damn people put some f*cking effort in it or some people will not waste their money on it.

The introduction was so weak in comparison to the other games in the series. Even if the part on Earth is not the very first scene in the final game, it still sets up the rest of the story and fails in that regard. Eain has already covered this in great detail, but I think it warrants repeating since you specifically asked for our feedback, especially the part about the dumbest Reaper who ever existed. I guess he didn't get the memo about Shepard and his/her ship.

The second part of the demo was equally bad, though I am certain this did not have to be the case. Forcing 4 weapons on the player without any mention of the Weight system and its effect on cooldowns is short sighted and, in the face of other missteps like Deception, inexcusable. This was your chance to wow us and at the same time make us forget about things like Deception, all the ridiculous DLC offers and any lingering resentment over forced use of Origin for PC players, but I think you dropped the ball.

I'm not preaching gloom and doom like some others have been ever since Dragon Age II, but for the first time I can see that such people might actually have a point about the direction Bioware games seem to be heading.

Holy **** this game will be awesome :o my femshep has grown over the few mass effect titles
