Just did a Soldier run through on Insanity:
Pros:
-
Overall, difficulty is just right, I think. Think Object Rho (Arrival, but less buggy). Got killed twice when I confused myself on the controls (more on that), but I had fun with this demo. The Atlas fight made me think a little bit (the AI is confuseable), but being fluid and smart got me through the demo without frustration.
-
Gameplay is much faster, but also smoother. Everything moves, fights and dies faster now. So can you though.
-
Movement is nice and fast now. Feels like a twitchier DXHR, actually.
There should def. be a tutorial sequence in the intro to allow new player to practice moving. (More on this)
- Squad AI is faster and smarter.
I did not feel dragged down by the squadmate AI at all, which is very nice. I noticed they also won't comply to overtly stupid commands, which was nice once when I got flanked. Will have to experiment a bit more with the attack/rally/move keys a bit to test the AI's limits.
-
Sound FX are greatly improved from ME2 as a whole. Music also creates a strong tension.
- Level design is greatly improved from ME2. Added complexity (elevations, obstacles, etc.) allows for more tactical options than ME2 + ME1.
-
Enemy AI is better than ME2's as a whole. They are not godlike, as some have been saying (TBH, they still do some stupid things) but overall, they seem to be just right in terms of difficulty.
-
Graphics are really nice on PC. It's all about the AA, man - which we finally have. The bloodied bodies are generally pretty good.
- Every weapon I tried out seemed to have a place. Eg: the Tempest was awesome at CQC; the Predator was weak but not useless;
the Mattock was good but not overwhelmingly so. Even the Avenger got some love.
- The levelling system seems good. For the most part you are forced to make some tough choices about how your abilities evolve, while getting the definite sense that you are steadily getting stronger. It's a good middle-ground approach from ME1&2s extremes IMO.
- The intro might've been even more powerful if the child NPC related more to Shep. Eg: if he would instead be a girl in the case of FemShep. I don't know if BW was purposely trying to avoid coming off as too exploitive though, so this is a minor nitpick in my mind.
- The little bit of squad banter I saw from the ME1 guys was brief but sweet.
- I didn't run into any obvious bugs.
Now for the nit-picks:
Cons:- The sound when you punch in from the Title Screen into the menu screen is weird as hell, IMO.
- I can see how people are saying the faces look more wooden. I think it's the cheeks, which don't move and thus seem tense during certain expressions. I think I saw more micro-expressions though, which was great.
- I got an abrupt head explosion from a Mattock to a Centurion's head. The random decapitations can be a little weird sometimes.
-
Some weapons seem to shoot too slow. I.E.: the Avenger, Mattock and Tempest...
-
I found it hard sometimes to tell if I was being shot, apart from suddenly going red and losing half my health tabs. Made me miss the old full-regen system a little, though the tab system helps keep certain classes (Vanguard) from being too abuseable.
- Controls might possibly be a tad too twitchy. I died twice from diving out of cover when I really just wanted to hug a bend or vice versa. Since this only happened twice for me, it could just be a matter of practice. Definitely have a practice sequence in the intro for new players.
- The demo's implementation of bypassing locked doors is strange because you don't know exactly whether you're doing it properly or not.
- Picking up objects is harder than before. I presume this was done to prevent players stun-locking themeselves by unintentionally picking up items during a fight.
Overall, the demo left me wanting more ME3, so I think that shows that BW did a great job. If the rest of the game is as good or better than this, then ME3 looks set to be the best of the series. Only time will how the finer bits of the gameplay, storytelling and presentation come together in the full game, but IMO, the future looks bright, so to speak. Here's to hoping BW knocks it out of the park with ME3!
