Honestly, I think this should be compulsory viewing at Bioware. Preferably in their animation department....

This was exactly my impression as well. Lets hope the ME3 intro is just a brief nightmare.

I enjoyed it, although the amount of auto-dialogue was worrying.

This mainly. And the fact that there's no 'neutral' option.

The focus of this game really has changed so much since ME1. I just re-read an old interview from early ME2 development where the programmers and artists were raving about nice things like featuring more of the Volus and getting the Elcor to move around a bit, plus designing more interesting mini games. How did everything swerve so utterly off course between then and now?

This. 110% this.

The option to keybind separate buttons for roll, melee and activate.

There are situations where you try to break sideways and end up rolling into adjacent cover.
It feels even stickier than ME2 and really breaks the flow of movement and combat when you seem to magnetically attach to every chest high wall.

I found the demo to be too much like your typical TPS, in truth.

I played the demo twice now.
I am really happy that you decided to give us different difficulties to choose from. If I think of other demos, most of them only have normal difficulty.

I will not comment on the story, it is just a demo and we only saw two very tiny parts from the game without any connection to each other or to the full game. I fully expect the trial to be part of the main game and really hope that there will be more conversation options in the full game, too.

- the kid: I had no connection to that one at all, could have made the same impact if it would be a dog. If you want us to feel anything for that little one, you should try to give him more character or at least some more of a background. Give im a family, give him a pet, let the pet die first and him cry over it or give him some more meaning.

- missing citizens: I only saw one civilian and that was the kid. The reaper attack took place in a very big city, so it seemed but there were no other people anywhere to be seen. Only a few soldiers. Where are all the other people? Why weren't there more corpses? Anderson kept talking about all the killing but I could not see any of that. It would be better to show the killing then to just let someone talk about it

- the admirals: Why are they asking Shepard what to do? They are admirals, they should know themselves

- the Normandy / the Reapers: You know the scene, when the dreadnought started firering on the Reaper ship, it went down after like two or three shots. Then the shuttles in a later scene were shot down immediately as if they posed such a big danger to the mighty reapers. And then the Normandy flies in, bombs some reapers on the ground and Shepard and Anderson still have time to chat about reinstatement and about what to do next.
Not event a single laser beam hit the Normandy. Are the Reapers stupid? That scene was way off, how can the Normandy just hover there a few meters away from that giant ground reaper without drawing any fire?

- the voice acting during the earth attack: normally I like the voice acting of all the characters, but during that sequence all the characters were way too calm.
Earth got attacked for god's sake, Reapers swarm up on them all over the world and they just talk to each other as if nothing was happening at all.

- waiting for the Normandy fight scene: Why is this not put on a timer? Why is the Normandy only flying in when Shepard runs out of ammo? On my first playthrough as a Vanguard it took me forever to figure it out. I kept saving my amunition and kept charging and meeleing the reapers.
In the second playthrough I just wasted the ammo and in came the Normandy to save the day. I would have preferred an event where you have to hold out a specific time.

- keybindings / coversystem: I had a few problems with the cover / roll system. First of all, why is everything on just one key? I can understand this for a x-box or ps3 where you do not have that many keys to work with. But why on the pc? Sometimes I wanted to use something and Shep went into cover. Sometimes when in cover I just wanted to stand up and shoot the crap out of an enemy and Shep rolled to the next cover.

All in all the game was ok though. It's just a demo so there is not a lot to say about the missing bits and pieces like renegade or paragon cutscenes / weapon customization or the story before the first scene. Looking forward to the game, already took my vacation and am ready to continue one of my many many ME1 / ME2 save games. :P

I just finished my final playthrough of the single player demo. I went through once for each of my five Shepards.

1. Sentinel: I've heard people complain about the tech armor but when comparing my Sentinel playthrough to the others, I noticed my Sentinel could take a lot more damage before I started hearing my heart beat. I approve.

2. Adept: The powers felt a little different. The animations and audio were strong, though, and I got through the demo without firing my pistol (except at the Husks for target practice and the Atlas at the end). I approve.

3. Engineer: Of all my playthroughs, this one gave me the most trouble in terms of adjustment. I couldn't quite get the hang of how the turrets are supposed to work. I expected them to be more like the Cerberus turrets and they seem to be more like stationary, better armed drones. I'm neutral here.

4. Vanguard: I had to learn how and when to charge again. The timing feels a little different from ME2. But once I did, it was awesome. Charge. Shoot. Nova. Run. I approve.

5. Infiltrator: This is a hard class to evaluate when there's no sniper rifle to play with. To me, the Infiltrator is all about cloaking, finding a good spot, then sniping targets. Still, the cloak works well and I had fun cloaking and then omni-slashing a target. I approve with reservations.

Other points of interest:

1. I found the battle on Earth breathtaking. At one point I stopped and just watched the Reapers move around. I was pleased to see three oculases chasing a shuttle. I felt like ducking when a huskified flying creature zoomed over head. The atmosphere there was fantastic.

2. While I understand the dialogue was limited, I enjoyed what was there. I also enjoyed that your conversation with Eve, the Krogan female, changed depending on if you your rep ran more towards Renegade or Paragon. Not just a line here or there but almost completely. It altered the whole tone of the discussion with her.

3. Like many people, I have to wonder if the little boy is real. His role seems to give voice to Shepard's fears. PTSD? A side-effect of the Cipher or the Lazarus project? I don't know.

4. Ashley with her hair down and make-up on gave me pause. Then I thought to myself, this was all sudden. Maybe Ashley was going for a night out with her sister(s) when they detected the Reapers and called her in. She had time to put on some armor but not scrub her face or pull up her hair. That idea works as well for me as any other to explain it.

I enjoyed the demo. Playing through multiple times really gave me a feel for the controls. After the first playthrough, I barely executed any unneeded rolls from one cover to another. The weapons felt fine. The powers felt fine. The more complex battlegrounds were something I could get used to.

I'm most certainly looking forward to 3/6.

Here's a quick long list of things you should have sorted out before it went "Gold".

- The "A" button on the Xbox controller or Spacebar on the PC should not do everything.
- Rolling is an unnecessary action, and makes it impossible to sprint in any direction other than forwards.
- The camera is zoomed in WAY too close to Shepard. It takes up too much of your visibility particularly in dangerous close combat situations, making classes like the Vanguard largely impractical to play.
- Storming is very disorienting because of all the camera-shake and the general close-ness of the camera.
- Shepard snaps to cover like Ryu Hayabusa sticks to walls. Even when you're trying to do the simplest of tasks like push a button, he'll crouch behind like he's spotted an army of angry Persians on the horizon.
- Climbing ladders is very unresponsive. This is an instance where the "A" button could actually be used effectively.
- Shepard makes a lot of decisions by himself opting to speak about subjects in a manner that my personal Shepard never would.
- There are no investigative options in the conversations. That's troubling.
- While the skybox shown off in the Earth level looks quite nice, the character's textures are terrible.
- In the Salarian homeworld mission, Wrex's voice is briefly replaced by Wreave's voice during the conversation on the radio.
- The press right stick to view your objective function was unnecessary. Teach new players how to use the Journal, it's not that difficult.
- Anderson has one too many lines of dialogue when you first follow him out the window. If you cut out even just one line, you'd have a lot less people screaming "shut up" at their screen. Because in all honesty they're probably just following right behind Anderson like they're supposed to. Don't baby the player so much.

I know you can't change any of this stuff now, since you rushed out the game for maximum "awesomeness" or whatever the effect you were going for was so good luck with that. I hope you attracted thousands of frat boys and football fans with your "hip" marketing buzz. I won't be buying the collector's edition to go nicely along with my ME2 collector's edition, because it doesn't measure up to ME2 gameplay wise. I'm still going to play the game, because I have at least some faith in the writers, and I hope they at least delivered something decent on their side of the project. But seriously guys. Test your stuff more. It doesn't feel good to play at all. It feels clunky and I wish more people would have told you that beforehand.

I've been lurking around here since the demo came out to see what other people thought and i decided to join in just to say QFT. That''s about as close to how i feel about it as well. To think this was the reason we didn't get a ME2 Compete edition.

1. Options should NOT be under extras (ROFL)
2. There should be an option for Shepard to default the helm to off *always* and not just in cutscenes (like squadmates who DID get the option).
3. The "default" resolution should be the same as your desktop resolution.

Other than that so far... HOLY CRAP. ;)

I loved the demo, but I felt too sensitive to the scrutiny of others, which kind of harms the experience. It would be so much better if I just didn't give a crap and could enjoy it that way. In particular, seeing the child in the vent got me thinking "is this that child I vaguely remember seeing some negative discussion about?"

I want to leave cover when I hit space, even if I'm holding a directional key. It's too much of a switch from ME2 to stop pressing A or D to exit cover. I exit cover to move somewhere else quickly. Make the roll separate or can I change the keybind for that specifically?

Overall I enjoyed the Demo quite a bit. The game gliched on me a couple times so I ended up playing chapter 1 several times before I was able to finish. It seems that If you kill the first wave of husks too fast, Anderson bugs and just stands there telling you to shoot. The first time I just restarted the game, the second time I looked around and there were husks way down in a shaft not moving. I killed them and game resumed. The second glitch was in the start of the second act as I was changing powers around to hotbar and game crashed. Other than that it had zero issues.

Things I really liked:
1. Graphics are nice. characters look really nice this version, well done.
2. Combat is fast paced and the waves were well done. I do not mind waves, as long as they do not drop from the sky, teleport in, etc. These all came from an entry point and that worked for me.

Things that I disliked:
1. There was really no RPG involved in the Demo. 2 choices that were the same (fight or fight). That is excusable as the demo seemed to focus mostly on combat anyway (and that is usually what you need the tutorial beginning for).
2. The lack of a transition into the game. In ME1 you started the franchise, so no real exposition was needed, we meet the cast as we progress. ME2 had the opening with Miranda and TIM talking about what happened (briefly) in ME1 and then moved to the Normandy. The demo just starts. Hopefully there is *something* that will ease one from 2 into 3 before the actual game starts. I do not need a Trial, or any in depth drawn out conversation chain, etc. but a cut scene showing briefly what happened would have been nice. Perhaps even of the end of the tribunal. I keep hearing about a Trial but Shep is not sent to a trial, but to a defense council. That seems a bit abrupt to just jump into.

There still are many questions I have regarding the game, like will there be minigames like hacking, how is the item modification going to work? Will Shep be able to wear a beret? Is light armor in the game of are we more like ME2 and one kind of moddable suit and other 'fixed' suits? Can any class use any weapon?

With respect to the hard work that was doubtless poured into this demo  - and with a ready acknowledgement that a demo isn't necessarily indicative of the final product's overall quality - I'm going to have to sound off in the 'resoundingly negative' category.

-What struck me off the bat was the way Anderson was written. It's like he went from a seasoned, stuffy military type to 'Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon'. Much of what he was saying and doing felt incredibly out-of-character. I suppose that's a hazard of the fact that the last time Anderson had a major role in the story, he was being written (presumably) by a different person.
-I still don't care for the female designs. It seems every female cast member had breast augmentation surgery between installments. Liara has gone from having a more sleek, thin frame in Mass Effect 1 to looking like a blue porn princess. And Ashley? She just looks like Miranda, complete with breast enhancements. Doesn't even feel like I'm interacting with the same character I enjoyed in the first game.
-It's been mentioned before, but binding the cover, run, and roll functions to the same button/key was a tremendous design oversight. I can't count on both hands the number of times I accidentally rolled instead of taking cover, and wound up getting shot in the process.
-The new melee kill feels overpowered. Maybe it's because the majority of the enemies in the demo were just grunts, but a one-hit-kill? And it doesn't take into account any strength stats, because... well, you did away with actual RPG stats some time ago. (Another rant for another day) At any rate, the potential for abuse is staggering.
-Of all the removals, the door bypass and hacking mini-game being taken out might irritate me the most. I really liked that addition in Mass Effect 2. Now I just hold down the 'A' button and wait... and then voila! Door magically opens.
-When I, like everyone else, heard there would be 'additional RPG elements' in Mass Effect 3, I naturally assumed the character level-up screen would get more complex and customizable. I was clearly mistaken. What we have in ME3 is the exact same level-up screen from ME2. So where are the added RPG elements? Weapon customization? And, again judging by what I played in the demo, not a much more robust customization system than we had in Mass Effect 1, either? Feels like a bait-and-switch, to me.
-The dialogue. Now, again, this critique comes under the proviso that I naturally expect the demo to be much less  open-ended than the retail version. But all the dialogue choices felt like either 'happy' or 'angry' responses to what was, otherwise, a completely linear experience.
-I've now played through as three separate classes: Infiltrator, Soldier, and Vanguard. And they all feel like playing as a Soldier! Playing as an Infiltrator feels like playing as a Soldier that can cloak, and so on. There's just not much meaningful variation, again... based on what I played. Maybe the differences become more apparent as you level up in the full game?

There are more, less significant problems I had with it, but... my dissatisfaction with the demo was enough to quash what little excitement I had for the game. I might rent it on release, see if it's worth a purchase. But I had to cancel the pre-order. It feels like the game is trying to be Gears of War 3, really. Which is why the whole thing felt like a protracted set-piece. And honestly...? Gears of War 3 is better at being a mindless sci-fi third-person shooter.

(PC)
Liked:
Every sound that entered my ears. The music, the shots, explosions, the voice over...

Disliked:
Animations (is bad, but i trust it will be better on retail);)
Graphics (is very bad on PC (except some faces), and i don't have too much hopes that it will be better on retail =/):crying:
Controls: Lack of proper usage of Keyboard and Mouse (the overload of functions in Space - at least give us the option to separate the functions - , no Holster weapon, can't use Enter, can't use O for Options...):(
Movements: Sometimes i wanted to run but i rolled, i wanted to roll but i ran, and the most annoying is the gravitational force that every single corner has to pull me to cover. I just wanted to run!:pinched:
HUD: Too small on 1080p:o
FoV:o
Wrex voice: I know i praised this in the liked stuff, and while i know Mordin's voice actor changed, Wrex voice felt like something was missing, his voice was too clean...
Conversation Options: I know they had to take it out lots of it. But what concerns me is the same thing i hated on DA2 - no matter what you choose, the answer is always the same, like for example the scene with the board, the guys always respond something like "that's it, thats our plan?". Unless it's this way again because of the demo size limitation.
Other things like "the beggining was to rushed" or the lack of conversations, i understand is due to the demo size.

Gameplay was fun and the skilltrees seems way more fun then ME2.

However, I had two main problems, teh first and main one being the amount of dialouge that Shepards speaks without any input is quite frankly pulling me out of the immersion the first and also the second one built. I hope this is just in the demo to push it along, but the entire opening went almost without any control at all.

The second one is very clunky controls, especially considering cover (though part of that might be because Im not used to the PC controls in the first two games), but doing everything with just space seemed very weird with a mouse and keyboard, and I always had problem getting out of cover as I wanted.

I wasn't too crazy about the controls in the beginning... but after playing multiplayer for a while, I just CANNOT see my self going back to not having the ability to roll. It seems SO vital and integral to surviving... I love it. The controls took a bit getting used to, but once I got it down, it was easy to manoeuvre around the field effortlessly.

Also people complaining about dialogue are ridiculous. For the last time, (okay not the last time) the demo had to be significantly reduced in terms of content... Dialogue was significantly tuned down within the demo (to my understanding) so the game could fit both multiplayer and singleplayer in 1.7gb.

I played on both PC and Xbox... I approve with both. Now if only we had a weapon bench on surkesh in the demo.

I doubt you guys will be able to sift through this much feedback (51 pages!)... especially to make any meaningful impact on the game... but:

The scenery on Earth was missing... something... I couldn't put my finger on it but the skybox/backgroud/distance on Illium looked WAY cooler then Earth's. It was something about the buildings, or the ground... it didn't look huge and far away, it looked small, and game-y. Adding a little fog or something might've helped.

The special effects for fire were apperently terrible. I didn't notice myself but my girlfriend watching me and my cousin who played it on his own later both, the first thing they said to me was, "Why is the fire so ugly?". I'm not sure why I didn't notice.

People's textures... please, please say they are compressed for the demo download size... augh, the textures on people...

The combat still feels like a non-action game that is trying to be a shooter. You should've went all out and made combat a straight third person shooter, rather then this weird, clunky, kinda awkward, slow-paced semi-action game with a shoehorned-feeling cover/movement system. I dunno, its so weird and clunky when you compare it to a shooter, and so simplistic when you compare it to a real RPG, it doesn't really stand on its own in any respect.

"Expanded RPG Elements"... er yeah... I guess by that you meant "The exact same system as ME2!". Not that ME1 was really that in-depth... but contrary to what you might think gamers (yes, even action gamers, even shooter gamers) understand an attribute/stats/skill system very well. In the future PLEASE stop being afraid to add a little depth! God of War had a deeper system then this... trust me, we can handle it.

The kid... was... uh... creepy. He didn't feel so much like a scared and running child so much as something from one of those horror movies. You should've made him crying and panicked I think...

That said I'm still excited for the full game. I think its true you really haven't meaningfully improved on ANYTHING that's been wrong with the mass effect series with the start. But its the narrative I play the games for, the presentation, and I couldn't tell for sure from the demo- there were some really iffy parts, it felt like I was being rushed along in the story- but it seems to be like this might be the best one so far, in that regard.

Edit: Oh wait, I forgot a huge problem I had! I imported my shepards face via the little face code and it made him look like some kind of mutant caveman...
