The multiplayer demo is amazing. I would list why but I'd pretty much be describing every aspect of the game. It is everything I hoped for and more with one exception. The only real gripe I have is that class/race unlocks show up far too infrequently. I see myself playing this all the way up until release and then definitely for a long time after. I just wish the frustrations of random unlocks were reduced.

Those Phantoms are really "kicking-ass". Thanks for the "Stasis" of my Asari Adept.

  • + Difficulty  I greatly appreciated the challenge presented by bronze-gold.  I can understand some people wanting an easier setting-but not at the expense of what is in place now...and with much lower rewards.
  • + Weapon/Weight system I love the balancing of weapon weight and ability usage-makes choice of guns more tactical while still giving full freedom of what you play with.
  • + Enemy AI overall I like that AI has a seemingly mostly proximity based threat system and doesnt have 360 vision-while still punishing reckless bullrushers and makes use of flanking routes.
  • + class/Race Variation I like that each race has it's own take on each class and unique animations for dodging/melee, etc. as well as our ability to play and level them all up eventually
  • + Skill trees Overall i like the meaningful choices available and tendency to focus on utility vs damage vs survival. More choices would still be welcome though.

Dislikes

  • - Random Race Rewards  It is very frustrating to get to lvl 50 and get many many many unlocks of human characters you already have and only 2 aliens.  I dont mind as much with weapons-but i wouldnt mind having a bit more choice in at least unlocking the lowest version of certain weapons.  If a more expensive 'new race' pack wont be made available-perhaps add points that are rewarded with package purchases that can be used to buy specific races/first tier weapons for very large sums.
  • - Matchmaking It mostly seems to work well-but early on i got alot of 1 and 2 man teams
  • - nonzoom vs zoom inconsistencies most notibly when using sniper zoom from cover-it's as if the camera shifts a couple steps in a different direction when hitting soom compared to non-zoomed reticle.  Often my target will be blocked by an object that is on the left of my field of vision when not zoomed-but centered while zoomed.

Think there needs to be a bit more race vaiety in each class. do we really need 2 humans for each class? mix it up a bit here.

I've been having lots of fun this weekend, playing with my friends.  There are a couple things though that bug me a little.

1. Are there now special rewards for completing a silver or gold mission, aside from bonus xp/credits?

I think there should be some sort of token/key that you get for completing a silver/gold mission, that can only be used for a unique unlock.  Maybe these can be used to unlock new looks for your armor or special colors for your guns.

For example a gold box would have a chance of rewarding wrex or grunt's armor style for your Krogan to use.  I hope you'll at least be able to use the different armor styles that Shepard unlocks.

2.  Alien skin colors:  I was excited when I finally unlocked this option on one of my characters, only to be hugely disappointed.  I was hoping it would actually change their face completely and make them look different.  But it only slightly changes the hue.

Since these multiplayer characters have no background and no part in the story, why cant they be more varied in appearance?  Not all Krogan have red head ridges.  I've seen browns, yellows, greens and even Grunt has grey ridges (but maybe that's because of his age).  Or instead of a skin option, can I have an option to put a helmet on?  Seems kind of strange that only the humans are wearing helmets.

At any rate, I think diversity will add more fun to multiplayer and more reasons for me to keep playing it.

I was skeptical about a Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode, as I imagine a few people were. I can happily say that my worries have been laid to rest. Bioware delivered an incredibly enjoyable online experience. While no game is perfect, this is one of the better online experiences I've had in some time.. and it's only the demo!

Pro
  • Cooperative Gameplay - I imagine people would have expected, or even prefered, an online versus type game. It may have even worked, but coop is the only way I could see it going. It helps to immerse yourself in the war against the Reapers and adds to the story. I assume based on the multiplayer trailer(where Shephard appears to be talking to the team) that we will have some sort of cutscene upon entering or even completing a mission.
  • Weight vs. Recharge Time - This is a great addition to the game. It gives you some more choice to how you approach the game. Do you want an assault rifle and a shotgun? Or do you take just an SMG and/or pistol and use your powers more for damage/CC?
  • Difficulty - It's slightly challenging even on Bronze. Silver and Gold offer quite a step up, but not overally difficult. It's balanced rather well.
Cons
  • Revive Issues - I don't have a fix for this, but I've noticed it happens quite often. I've had several peopel die on me due to this.
  • Power Mapping - Not a huge issue, but being able to map your powers and even weapons would be a nice touch.
  • Conversation - Playing with pick up groups can be annoying when the other have no headset(which is most of the time). Being able to give orders to attack, defend, etc. would be nice.
  • Customization - I do not mind what we have now, so it's hardly a con. I feel that there should be, at least, a few armor changing options. Perhaps have a Krogan/Turian with a helmet showing? New shoulderpads, helmet, etc. for a human?
I've noticed people complain about the random loot system. It can be frustrating, sure. I understand why the system is utilized and I support it. At first, I did not. I warmed up to it. While there are a few examples, I'll provide one. I received several shotgun upgrades and was never a big shotgun fan. I decided to give it a try and realized it was great. It's not a perfect system, but that's okay.

There's more I could say about it, but overall I am happy with the experience. I'm counting down the days until release and I look forward to taking the fight to the Reapers!

I thought I wouldn't give a damn about the multiplayer, honestly. Demo convinced me otherwise. It is the most fun I've had since the Unreal Tournament series. Thank you for co-op.

It has also convinced me you guys have absolutely nailed the gameplay for the single player game. Given that I'm loving just two maps with the same enemies, once the more varied stuff comes up, should be a blast.

I'm ok with the random pack system. You should have heard the happy screams of joy when one of our players got a Turian. She was ecstatic :)

It's always a happy surprise when you get something you've been pining for.

About the unlocks, today I received not one but two Drell Vanguards in separate veteran packs. Wouldn't it check my character list and see if I don't already have it?

I love the AI for the enemies, and I love the different types of monsters. It is challenging and you have to use different tactics and strategies. In Battlefield 2 when I played against bots it was boring is hell. In ME 3 it is a blast. Well done, I have had a blast.

I approve of the Phantom.

On a few occasions I was frozen in place at the start of the game. Disconnect issues were a problem periodically. When players dropped it halted the game or restarted the level which was annoying. It should be a seamless transition when a player opts out.

One thing I'd like to see is a possibility to join an ongoing match if there is a vacancy.

The Lobby system could use some refinement, but overall the experience has been enjoyable.

That was my first multiplayer game since halo 2 came out. I'm definitely rusty and out of practice, but I got put with a couple good people who saved me a few times. Even for someone as inexperienced as myself, it's still incredibly enjoyable, and I can see myself spending a lot more time than I should playing this. There are still a few issues here and there, but I think they were rare and didn't effect gameplay. Now that people are on and playing a lot, I'm sure they'll work most of the bugs out as quickly as they can. For a system as young and mostly untested (by fire and a few years of refinement) I think origin did a lot better than I expected.

Please change the way characters are unlocked, it's frustrating, and BS. Lots of people wanted to play non humans, hell, you even have to unlock human genders just to play, I mean, what's up with that?

Unlocking characters or even genders through the boxes is possibly the worst thing implemented into a multiplayer game I've ever seen. People would be more inclined to play the characters they want, in the game that's supposed to be customizable to every armor piece, color, and physical appearance.

At least let us buy the characters with credits, please!

after playing the multiplayer almost nonstop with some friends I have found a few gripes with the game.

I've noticed that the Kroken and Turian have no 'evasive' moves.... ok I can understand why a Krogan wouldnt but Turian? they should be able to at least do those silly side hops that the Quarian does...

I AM KROGAN!!! Had to say it. I noticed that too. After playing as a Human Soldier for so long then switching to Krogan it took a few games under my feet to understand how to play him. Now I never evade. I Rush!

Ok the matchmaking needs some tweaking, but i wouldnt say anymore or less than any other shooter online at this point.

My onlie real complaint is the race unlock are too rare, I'm closing in on rank 50, but dozens of veteran packs and the only ice unlocked is a drell vanguard and salarian infiltrator. Seriously guys these need to change

Pro:
-Mass Effect's gameplay lends itself well to the co-operative experience.
-It's implemented in a way that makes sense within the Mass Effect universe, and I LOVE that.
-It's damned fun. And I love being able to play as the different species within the Mass Effect universe.

Con:
-It's demoralizing to constantly be denied the one species you're after above others. I *guess* I can see why they'd do that, to add replay value. But really, it's just depressing. I promise I'd still continue to play it long after I unlocked what I wanted to, guys.
-Customizing appearance, initially, is slim. I'd like to express individuality, and look somewhat different from others of the same species. Once unlocked (which I have yet to do on any race that I actually wish to play), it looks very nice.
-That today isn't March 6th and I can't actually retain the progress that I make until then. :D

I've really enjoyed my time with the demo. I've wanted to share the Mass Effect experience with my friends for a long time, and not just something we could talk about. Something we could all participate in. I'm very glad that they decided to implement it.

But, please. Set a separate category for aliens in the shop. Something. Make them cost a ton of credits, or something. 100k plus. I'd be fine with that, if I could at least know and see that I'm progressing towards what I really want, and not relying on dumb luck.

Context: Long-time rabid fan, was excited when multiplayer was announced, have been playing exclusively with one friend of mine on Bronze, with me as an Infiltrator and her as a Vangard.

Good:
  • It is, on the whole, very, very fun. I don't usually like multiplayer experiences (Admittedly more often due to the people than the game), but I have thus far enjoyed my experience very much, and can't wait for the full release to drop to have access to more enemies and maps. You promised it would be a fun experience and true to Mass Effect, and you have delivered exactly that.
  • The random item reward system is doing a lot right. Tying weapon and consumable acquisition to this is a great decision--it goes a long way to keep players balanced relative to each other, and prevents frequent players from dominating too much because they can buy all the medi-gel they need while less comitted players can't.
  • I touched on this, but it really does feel very, very true to Mass Effect in playstyle. You truly get the sense that, while you aren't playing as Shepard, you are very much in the same universe as him/her--and some perspective on just how amazing a combatant Shepard is.
  • Race/class combinations do a great job of making sense--All the engineers, for example, are very much Engineers, but the different races are different enough to have their own strengths, and in ways that make sense for their species.
  • Consumables provide legitimate and noticable improvement to you effectiveness without feeling un-balancing. The few times I used them, I could definitly tell I was doing better, but I didn't feel overpowered compared to the enemies.
  • Voice chat works well, and provides pretty much everything you need it to.
  • Leveling feels well-paced, smooth, and rewarding. It's easy to unlock all the powers early on, and worth it to focus on one or two as you keep leveling.
  • Boosting the starting level of new characters as your first one levels up is fantastic--makes it much less frustrating to start a new character, but still leaves you room to play it and enjoy leveling it independently.
Bad:
  • This has been said before, and you've said it's not likely to change, but it bears reiteration: while random consumable and weapon/mod drops are good, it can be very frustrating to get lots of things over and over for classes you have no intent on playing and miss out on the ones you might actually use. There really should be some way to have a little more control over what you have--whether that's additional varieties of packs offering class-specific ranges of items, or some kind of trade system, even if highly regulated (Inability or extreme difficulty to reclaim an item marked for trade would go a long way toward providing an outlet for item switching without flooding the market, particularly if it was limited to non-consumable items), would really improve the experience. I (And I think most players, even if they might disagree) don't want a way to make sure we get a specific item--that removes the surprise and, I think, part of the fun. But it'd be very nice to have a way to make sure we're getting useful and relevant items, even if they were more expensive packs. I would gladly pay 30-40 thousand credits for a Recruit Pack if I knew any items or mods I got would be Sniper Rifle or SMG related (Since I'm playing an Infiltrator).
  • I agree with the decision to have races unlockable, however there is no valid reason to have different genders of the same race locked. Races are worth being unlockable because they are mechanically different. Yes they look cooler, but that doesn't make them worth unlocking on their own. Taking up character unlock slots for characters who are essentially the same as ones you already have is just frustrating--If I want to unlock a Krogan Soldier, unlocking the female Human soldier is kind of like a slap in the face. It's exactly the same as the class I'm playing (If I'm playing a male soldier)--why should Iswitch to a female one and loose most of my character's progress? Likewise, if I'm a girl, why should I have to unlock the ability to accurately represent my gender in-game? Why do I have to be forced to either play as a man, or play as a different class? It feels arbitrary, un-needed, and honestly borderline sexist. Race should be earned--gender should not.
  • On a related note: Krogan and Salarians both have valid story reasons for only having male characters fighting on the frontlines. Asari only have one gender to begin with. Turians don't--their race, according to all available lore, is as evenly male/female as humans, and their culture makes no differentiation between genders in military service. Quarians are the same--and we already know what male quarians look like! You've made models of them for ME2! Drell are an unknown as far as gender split, but we have no indication female Drell shouldn't be as present as males. So why aren't there gender options for Turians, Quarians, and Drell? Their exclusion feels arbitrary and dissapointing, particularly since they have no story reason for being missing, and every reason to be present. You only included multiplayer because you could justify it in the story--why not make it an accurate representation of the story? (For record: I say this in conjunction with the above point. class/race combinations should unlock both genders--however, if you don't follow that, these genders should still be added as unlockable. I'd rather have them present and more difficult to aquire than not present at all.)
  • Adding friends is difficult--it should be mentioned somewhere plain that it's done through Origin, not in-game, as that is both counter-intuitive, and intitially confusing. Also, having to re-start your game to accept an invite from your friend to play multiplayer is not only inefficient, but also annoying. Why can't it just switch game modes? (Because it's done through Origin, yes, I know. Doesn't make it any better, if much less likely to be fixed.) Also, there's a good deal of potential for this messing with people's single-player experience--dropping out of single player by accepting a multiplayer game invite in the middle of a mission could easily ruin a good bit of work, if you haven't been remembering to save frequently and don't think twice before accepting the invite. At the very least, there should be a warning and confirmation prompt when switching from single directly to multi, particularly with how game invites are handled.
  • It's slightly frustrating to start a mission, screw up before the first credit mission, get sent back to base, and not recieve any credits at all. Particularly since, in these cases, you likely aren't getting much experience either. It'd be really nice if there was a small credit reward for each wave, or each wave before the first main credit mission--even if it was just 50 or 100 credits a wave. It would feel like a nice consolation for screwing up, and make attempting solo missions just that little bit more rewarding (Though certainly not worthwhile). I'm in favor of making solo missions very vaguely rewarding because they really are the best way to experiement with your loadout without annoying everyone and risking being confined to a loadout that isn't working for an entire 10-12 wave mission. I'm using a Viper and loving it, but I want to see if the magazine extension mod I got for Sniper rifles extends the mag of the Mantis to two shots-- if it doesn't, I'm sticking with the Viper, without question. It's much faster and less annoying to others if I check this by running a solo mission; I know I won't make it through, but I'll learn what I need to know. IT'd be nice to have a small, 100 credit reward for making it through a wave while doing this.
  • Phantoms are Atlas-level enemies; I understand this. I respect it. However, an Atlas is slow and predictable enough that, even if you're running a squad without very good ways of dealing with shields or armor, you can still take it out--you might have a hard time, and it'll benefit you to take out the infantry first, but it's doable. Phantoms don't have this; unless you have a very good way of dealing with barriers on your squad, it can be very hard to get them vulnerable, and if that squad lacks any form of crowd control (Which it usually does, if it doesn't have very good ways to deal with barriers), they become damn near impossible to take out without a missle. After playing as much as I have, I would much rather use a missle on a Phantom than an Atlas--and that just doesn't seem right.
  • In general, more packs would be nice--I've mentioned class ones, but even just a blanket one offering a higher level of rarity than the Veteran pack would be nice. Variety is a spice that should be used. Also, an expensive pack offering one random race/class unlock would go a long way toward easing the issues with the way the system works now--If I really want to unlock an alien, I can play what I have to get credits for that pack and have a reasonably good chance of getting something alien for it. It would also be a really nice bone to players who have played a lot, gotten fully-leveled human characters, and are just playing them for fun because they never unlocked the alien version of a clas they're interested in--they're going to have extra credits to burn, and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to use them on a more expensive pack that offers them half a chance of unlocking a new race/class combination they're actually interested in playing and leveling. (This is assuming, of course, there's no way of unlocking multiplayer characters in singleplayer.)
  • High-priority-target sub-missions feel unduly hard compared to the others--mostly because of the time constraint. Dealing with one specific target, usually surrounded by other enemies, can be almost impossible, and another 15-30 seconds per person would make it feel slightly less unbalanced relative to the other missions. (This is particularly true when the high-priority targets are Guardians--They themselves are not overly difficult to deal with, but they can be more time-consuming than other units, and that can make the short time window of high-priority-target sub-missions seem much more steep.)
  • The loadout customization menu is fine once you get used to it (On PC, at least), but a brief, one-time navigation tutorial wouldn't be amiss. Particularly since changes are saved as they happen without confirmation--thus, there is no distinction between "Confirm change" and "Exit Sub-menu", which is counter-intuitive to most customization menus. Though I would point out this isn't bad itself--it simply is something that would be better said up front than discovered via experimentation.
Hope I made my points as clearly as possible, and as convincingly as possible. I really do enjoy playing it a great deal, and for a first try at multiplayer for Mass Effect, it's doing a heck of a lot right--but a couple changes and a scattering of additions would take it from being very, very good to absolutely excellent.

-Tolan

P.S. ... Would it be possible to get some sort of /dance or /taunt ? Not as commands, obviously, but... Hey, come on. You know you want to see a Salarian get funky with it. :P

Human Male and Female.  Unless of course you want them to remove female/male from the game, which would just make people lash out against bioware for gender discrimination or something

I dont know about Xbox users but PC demo multiplayer is full of bugs. The game is fun when it actually works

Sometimes when you join a game you have no abilities on your hotbar even though you have purchased them and you cant add them (have to exit game to fix)

Sometimes when you lag you travel under the ground and get stuck (have to exit game)

Sometimes your bullets and abilities do nothing and mobs ignore you. (have to exit game)

4 out of 10 times when joining a match it sits there loading for 3 minutes then gives up

3 out of 5 times when you use the rocket launcher it does nothing but still consumes 1 out of 2 charges, typically the second works but you wasted both on 1 atlas.

All of these are fixed by quitting the game and with the designers great wisdom you lose everything you had contributed to that point.
