I like it. Something different than everyone else in the gaming world. Just my opinion.

Never played FIFA then?

FIFA has a hugely popular game mode called Ultimate Team which works essentially in the same way as this, you purchase packs and then get a random selection of items from said packs, with rarer items more likely to come up in more expensive packs.

It's really a very good system, something that they adapted to allow you to purchase packs with real money (sounds silly right?), people actually do that and you can even find squads being sold on eBay for up to a few hundred. Of course i'm not advocating they should ever go as far as that, because Ultimate Team is far, far bigger but the actual idea of random items themselves aren't a bad thing. If anything it encourages you to keep playing until you get what you want.

Ah, so thats why the guy who hacked my Xbox Live account bought those with the leftover M$ points I had...

yeah but random drops for the same items over over again is just bad.

What I'd like to know is whether it's better to use 5,000 or 20,000 unlocks. Which really has the higher chance to get goodies. You seem to get more items for 4 x 5,000 - however not sure what the chance of proper items is for that compared to 20,000. Anyone got any ideas?

I concur that the system could be better, but I managed to unlock what I needed for my class (upgraded pistol + more ammo) early on. Fluke I guess. Took 2 or 3 - 20,000 upgrades though.

I save up for the 20,000 unlocks because I believe they are guaranteed to give you an uncommon item, while the 5,000 packs are completely random.

Though, it doesn't help much when you keep getting the same item... lol

Heh. What I'd like to know though is if it's still better to just do 4 x 5,000. Perhaps the chance of getting one becomes close to 100% after 4 of those unlocks. Plus you get more single use items I'd assume?

At first I thought it was rather fun, but the more you play the more frustrating it is to get what you really want. I'm all for having each item have a set value you can buy with the creds you earn from missions. Makes it much more realistic in the sense of Mercenaries buying their gear.

If this MP has the longevity of a game like Battlefield 3, then there's no rush to unlock all the weapons. It's crap if you have all the best unlocks within 1 hour of playing the game.

Besides, as you're patiently awaiting unlocks for your favorite class, you're unlocking items for the other classes (even if you don't use them yet) - this makes it easier to switch classes later when you get bored of your current one.

Plus it's oh so fun and suspenseful waiting to find out what's in that mystery box!

For me, it is just the opposite. Set a bar for me and I'll work for it (ie. Call of Duty/Battlefield level based unlocks). Telling me to play and win the character I want to play? I'll pass. It works for a game with competitive multiplayer, but I don't think it is very entertaining for a co-operative multiplayer. Just my opinion though, no need to go spreading it around.

Devs, just copy Battlefield 3 on this please. Unlock weapons and mods based on weapon kills, unlock additional races based on class use. Let us buy what we want or at least work towards we want.

Nobody likes wasting creds on crap.

The problem with this thread's existence is that the game's already gone gold. Meaning nothing can be changed, except through patches/DLC.

They really should have released the demo in time to make changes according to fan input.

Never too late thanks to DLCs. However it would require a fair bit or revamping to change the whole concept of how unlocks work in MP.

Yeah that's why I said a compromise would probably work best. They're not going to redo the whole thing before or after the game comes out, but if they keep the random factor contained to the class your using then it shouldn't be too much of a problem

I think they should just make Characters and Weapons expensive.

What is wrong with everybody??? The randoms are fun and exciting! It encourages me to try something I may not have ever thought to try. Yeah, maybe I didn't get my Krogan Sentinel, but there's going to be a point when all of us will have unlocked everything. Just because you didn't get what you wanted (from a FREE GIFT BAG, wasn't that nice of them, eh?), doesn't mean it's a problem.

Oh, that, yes. Oh my, that was years ago! But I stopped playing video games after I got married and raised a family.

Can I come back to the present now? :?

Im ok with the random unlocks. Yeah, it sucks not getting what you want when you want it...but when you finally DO unlock the stuff you want, it feels oh so sweet.

This right here. It's going to be really cool trying to prepare yourself with the weapons, mods, powers and supplies you can get your hands on as you try to fight  for the gold medals on maps. I think being able to buy anything you want would take away from that. This system basically forces you to deal with the hand dealt to you.

I understand that it can be a bit frustrating not unlocking new characters (I spent countless credits and haven't unlocked any new characters) but I kind of like the randomness behind it. It creates some anticipation as you open up new packs hoping that the character or weapon you want might be inside.

I know it's not for everybody but I quite like it and it'll be cool to see how they expand upon it in the full game.

I think it would be nice to pick ONE race/class you want to play as in the beginning or at some point, and the rest from then on is random.
The randomness of drops improves the longevity of the game. It does suck in a sense though, looking back at TF2, but it made Ze Goggles or whatever hat/weapon you wanted feel really good when you got it.

i propose a solution that would involve minimal effort by the devs ( i think) but would be a fair compromise for players that hate random unlocks (i actually think its a good idea).

When you buy a pack, all the stuff in it you don't want (ie it doesn't fit your class or you already have it) you should be able to sell it back and regain some of the credit spent on the pack. resell value of items would depend on what they are and how rare they are.

Edit: You cant sell unlocked classes back. thats not ok... hahah

That's not a bad idea at all, Ace. I much prefer it to some wanting the random drop system scrapped altogether. At least this way, everybody is happy.

It's like you took the tiny comment I made and got everything I meant in it. I kept it simple because I'm not good at explaining stuff, glad someone understood.
