Last night, while getting close to wrapping up ME2 for my first time, disaster happened. I finished all side quests, loyalty missions, and DLC and had just gotten the Reaper IFF. While the load screen was showing after the finish of the IFF mission, it froze. I gave it plenty of time, then rebooted my system. When I got back into ME2, all my save games were gone and I could only choose "New Mission". My save game files show a "corrupted file" with my other save games which matches my ME2 saves.
Is there any way to recover these save games, or do I have to do it all over again?

Did you perform a system backup anytime during that playthrough? If so you can do a system restore from that point, however it will also restore all other save files.

Wait, PS3 has a System Restore feature? Cool, I didn't know that.
Anyways, I don't think he would've just randomly created a system backup, this has never happened to me in 5 playthroughs of ME2 on PS3.
Sorry Ultima, guess you're royally screwed,

Did not create a backup and didnt even know that was possible.. Sounds like I better look into that. IF it happens again late in my replay, I might just snap.
So, yes, I guess I am just SOL.

This happened to me lastnight. The game froze so I rebooted my ps3 and when I got back to the ME2 main screen my game was saying new game and there was no option for resume. It was as if I has put ME2 in for the first time. I went to load and there was nothing there. However I did end up fixing it. I went into my save data folder at the xmb and there was a save for ME2, I was shocked because it wasn't showing up in the game menu. I then backed up that save and them erased it from the save data folder and then copied it back in. I started the game back up and it was there, not only was that save there but also my two auto saves and my two hard saves.
I'm not sure what happened but it was odd and actually very scary for a minute. I ended up losing nothing.

Same here.
40 hours in and all progress is gone.
I have no backup save. I would have done so if a warning could have been included, I thought that having a rotation of 4 saves was enough, but the save system in this game is utterly useless.
Guys, can you make an application to generate a save file that could get me back to where I was. Maybe an online form that I could use to check certain boxes to confirm which agents i'd recruited and whether they were loyal or not, what guns I had, powers etc, then generated a downloadable save state.
It's really disappointed me, this game was the best game I've played since metal gear 3.
