Horrible textures indeed, its not about how good it should be, i mean id love some 4000k textures but thats just unrealistic, the problem is textures are a lot worse than ME2, at least in ME2 i dont remember all those pixels on Normany.

They are terrible; is anyone else getting horrible performance, even with relatively good hardware?

If my Radeon hd 6450 can run it smooth as butter, so can yours(unless its very ancient hardware you got)

It's a 5770... that's utter crap that mine's hitting the mid 20's at points...

That screenshot isn't that high quality to begin with, so I can't tell if the details you're complaining about are from that or if they're actually in the game. And does the demo give you access to graphics options?

Here is a link to a PNG version:
Pic

The pic was taken in 1080 but photobucket resizes to 576. I'll email the picture to you if you want. The extreme blurriness you see is how it looks on full 1080p. Its BAD. I'm running the PC and Xbox demo at the same time and the xbox looks way better, maybe its a problem with the demo, it shouldn't look this bad.

Just got thru playing PC demo. Looks great, sounds are fantastic, music as always top notch and the combat game-play mechanics, for the most part, are pretty fluid and very responsive. I'm not saying it's perfect but overall -- I'm impressed!

I'm connected to servers (BF3 early access), so going to try some MP.

edited to add: My fps stayed at 62 -- smooth as butter.  Also, if I'm not mistaken, the hud is positioned lower to the bottom of the screen as compared to the 360.

Graphics look fairly decent - could be better but decent enough all the same. I just hope my Shepherd doesn't get the 'walking in the air' bug in ME3 which they never fixed in ME2.

I'll clear this up right now before some **** says something else.
I took 2 identical PC monitors and put them next to eachother (had them anyway, go eyefinity!)
Then I downloaded the demo on PC and 360, started them at the same time and started looking for differences.

For as far as I could tell both versions look EXACTLY the same.
The 360 seems a bit darker but everything else was just identical.

We need screenshots so we can judge for ourselves, Janice.

Right now all you're offering is anecdotal evidence.

Someone said in another thread that the textures look good now so I was quite relieved until I actually played it. Man, this hurts my eyes.

Not sure what kind of PC you have, but I see a significant difference. It's impossible to not see one, because the game runs at native 1080p on my PC.

Did you set the graphics settings with the configuration utility before you ran the game?

In the configuration utility when you turn on the AA, how much it is (like 2x or 4x)?

Look at how successful DICE were with BF3, why not copy a good market strategy and make it for the PC first and have it optimized and then downgrade it to the consoles with 7 years old hardware.

And to people saying "it's the demo" how are you so? Surely Origin has no demo size limit and, therefore, they could use better textures? Would increasing the quality of some textures like these two (arguably the most important ones in the entire game) really make the size 100's of MB bigger?

Because the demo is free, its a handout that does cost them money in terms of bandwidth.  Double/triple the bandwidth on 2GB and it does get substantial when you multiply the number of downloads by the thousands.

That said I do think it is a mistake to release demos with lower fidelity assets because you get threads like this.  While the uproar would be justified if this was the retail version, I still think the shipping version will have much higher quality assets.

But to give some substance to my argument, I just looked at the shipping binaries to confirm my suspicions:
  • ME2:  %:\\Origin\\Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\CookedPC
  • ME3 Demo: %:\\Origin\\Mass Effect 3 Demo\\BIOGame\\CookedPCConsole
From this we can gather the demo textures are the same for both the PC and consoles and that people's eyes are not deceiving them when they see muddy low-res rubbish for textures.

Looking into this more however there is hope because if you look at some of the actual game assets, you will see the files are 2-3x larger, meaning a doubling of texture resolution at minimum (512x512 to 1024x1024 or 1024x1024 to 2048x2048).
  • ME3 demo: BioH_Garrus.pcc = 2,500KB
  • ME2: BioH_Garrus.pcc = 7,529KB
I may just get a little crazy and just copy it over and see what it does. ;)

Ideally a Bioware rep steps in and just puts an end to all the speculation though.

GTX 580 here, and I second that statement. If I wanted my game to look like that, I'd have to run it at 720p.

Of course I did(and double checked after you posted that), 1920x1080 with 16x anti aliasing. There is no way it should look this bad, i'll try re-installing it.

I dont think 1080p or 720p has anything to do with it.  Not sure how people are getting these textures. Unless the software is detecting lesser hardward and downgrading the textures on its own accord

Yep. Sounds more like a bug. For those that are talking about the texture sizes, I wonder if they are downgraded just for the demo.
