ME3 PC textures still look awful

It basically looks the same as ME2 PC, that is...still better than consoles but it could look so much better with high res textures, especially on the armor and clothes. You have these crisp high res faces, then muddy, 1996 textures on the clothing. I think thats why it stands out so much.

According to MSI afterburner the game is only using about half of the Video RAM on my GPU so there's oodles of more room for high res textures.

PC users don't forget to use the config utility to enable 16x AF. It defaults to like 2x or 4x.

Deal with it. Best UE3 looking game.

Characters looks sooooooo good now.

Cherry picking your screenshots eh?

As for Best looking UE3 game that's laughable.

Mirror's Edge is gorgeous and obviously Arkham City.

Yes Arkham City has some problems at max for some people (not me) but at least Rocksteady bothered to give us DX11, highres textures, better LOD and other stuff. Just look at Batman!

You're 100% sure that second screenshot is game graphics?

What the hell do PC gamers see when they look at a PC game? I see people whining about the textures in Crysis 2, which makes no sense, and disregards that the animations are a step up from the first game. And while I can tell the difference between a PC game with no filtering and 16x AA, I don't need to stick in a second video card just so I can play force games to run at absurd, unsupported filtering levels like 32x AA.

Cherry picking your screenshots eh? The ground texture looks bad, armor textures look bad especially when in a dialogue scene. Yea the faces look good but looks like once again were getting good looking faces **** armor textures like in ME1 and ME2.

Why does it bother you so much if you thought the other games in the series looked sh*t too? You still played them, and you must have liked something about them or you wouldn't be here.

They whined about Crysis 2 textures because they were patently worse than Crysis 1 textures, it's called consolitis. There was even some textures they used ripped directly from Crysis 1 but then down-ressed them for Crysis 2. Eventually they released a high res texture pack though.

And yes, there is an enormous difference between a game with no texture filtering or AA and a game with it enabled. I agree after 16x its very high diminishing returns.

Why the hell does it bother you PC users are complaining about a game that is being release on PC? **** you console users ****ed about the texture popin in Mass Effect 1 and Bioware decided to fix that but we can't have highres textures? It's not like they are making them after the game is out they already have them just give us a highres patch.

Yes I'm sure just open it in a different tab and you can see some jagged edges (obviously can't happen in real life). Looks good doesn't it? Dice can make anything look good.

Protip: Don't play BioWare games for their graphics engines. Alternatively, learn to stop worrying and love the storyline.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I tried to say it better but it was word for word the same!

And to people saying "it's the demo" how are you so? Surely Origin has no demo size limit and, therefore, they could use better textures? Would increasing the quality of some textures like these two (arguably the most important ones in the entire game) really make the size 100's of MB bigger?

Because the demo is free, its a handout that does cost them money in terms of bandwidth.  Double/triple the bandwidth on 2GB and it does get substantial when you multiply the number of downloads by the thousands.

That said I do think it is a mistake to release demos with lower fidelity assets because you get threads like this.  While the uproar would be justified if this was the retail version, I still think the shipping version will have much higher quality assets.

But to give some substance to my argument, I just looked at the shipping binaries to confirm my suspicions:
  • ME2:  %:OriginMass Effect 2BioGameCookedPC
  • ME3 Demo: %:OriginMass Effect 3 DemoBIOGameCookedPCConsole
From this we can gather the demo textures are the same for both the PC and consoles and that people's eyes are not deceiving them when they see muddy low-res rubbish for textures.

Looking into this more however there is hope because if you look at some of the actual game assets, you will see the files are 2-3x larger, meaning a doubling of texture resolution at minimum (512x512 to 1024x1024 or 1024x1024 to 2048x2048).
  • ME3 demo: BioH_Garrus.pcc = 2,500KB
  • ME2: BioH_Garrus.pcc = 7,529KB
I may just get a little crazy and just copy it over and see what it does. ;)

Ideally a Bioware rep steps in and just puts an end to all the speculation though.

Excellent work Sir.

You've got thousands of gamers downloading this demo, they don't want to spend hours downloading multiple GB's for 50 minutes for gameplay. Cutting down the texture filesize for a gameplay demo to create a smaller file makes sense to me. Even though I don't like looking at '99 textures these day anymore...

It's unfortunate that the reputation of a game the developers clearly worked very hard on will suffer over such petty concerns is the sum of it.

Why are console players writing in threads about the PC version is what i can not fathom. Clearly they have no stakes in the PC version. Why don't they just butt out?

Demo's typically have always been lower visual fidelity. This is done to compress the game for a smaller file size. This is nothing new. Look to the full game release before you complain.

I just came from the Xbox 360 demo. I was shocked to see how much of a improvement it was. HUD looks better, controls are better, etc. More than worth it, because I had to level my guy all over again on PC.

Just played the demo, just cancelled 2 Collector's Editions after playing the demo. And yes, because of the awful textures.

Are you guys (devs) serious? Are these textures of a 2012 game? Whats wrong with you anyway? Why you can't just create nice textures in all of your games? ME1, DA:O-A, ME2, DA2, and now ME3, all have pixelated textures!

Don't get me wrong! I support the "story>graphics" as well "gameplay>graphics", but, but THIS IS A GAME! If you play a game only for the story, then better read a book. Or if you play a game only for the gameplay, then better play with your girlfriend... A game MUST be a summation of all of these, Story, Gameplay, Graphics etc. That's what makes it unique as product.

Bioware, I'll buy Mass Effect 3, but this time the standard edition. Never again the same mistake...(DA2 SE)....

Thanks for the reassurance.  I was seriously worried that the final version would be FUBAR when it came to graphics, just based on Bioware's dismal track record.

Read Chizow's post before you come to a conclusion.  It's almost a certainty that the demo textures are not representative of the final version.

[*]The above is a bad comparison because The ME2 file contains multiple textures and the demo likely only contains one.

Demo does look good if you enable all options in the config file....gameplay is fine. It's the closeups that are jarring during conversations as they stick out against the rest of the game.

Yup,
Once it starts to look bad for PC it usually means that they will be bad.
a High res texture pack is absolutely needed.
Too bad I pre-ordered on Origin and can't get a refund, otherwise I would.
I'm not paying full price for a half finished game.
There's indie games that look better then this crap. (hard reset for one)
