Is It Just Me Or Are the Controls Terrible?

Hopefully, BioWare ironed out these issues in the final version, but if they didn't, they sure could learn a lesson from Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. The controls in that game are perfect. Shift to sprint, space + directional key to roll.
Shift: Sprint and enter/exit cover.
Space + Directional key: roll and context sensitive actions, like jumping over a gap.

Apparently, that's too much work for Bioware to bother...
What do you mean? I've found Bioware to be pretty responsive to their fans, especially compared to most of the large game developers and publishers.

But the actual 'controls' were fine for a demo, IMHO.

My first demo playthrough it was kind of awkward because they were slightly different from ME2, but I had the exact same issue with ME1>ME2.
Have done 4 demo playthroughs now and it feels find to me now, have gotten quite used to it.

For one thing.. the controls have killed me twice during demo, i want to run away from fire but char turns so damn slow when you run so get too close to "cover"... stupid shepard sits down and gets killed. Stupid cover system if you ask me.
That's why they gave us a roll. . . improved your health and shields if you're dying a lot. It's like Dr. Suchong used to say, "Problem not with plasmid, problem with reaction time." If you don't die in a game, then maybe it's too easy for you. I do think it's annoying how Sheperd "vacuums" himself to walls when you press "A" but that's part of the challenge--the game can't read your mind, so be more careful. Sorry I don't want to sound like snob, but I like "difficult" games, even if that means controls are difficult, it's just one more challenge.

I felt the same way at first but by my 3rd play of the demo it got REALLY comfortable. I'd feel weird going back to ME2 at this point...

And I also thought that the control got "wild" from time to time.

Sometimes I wouldn't even have to touch anything, I'd get behind cover and shepard would pop back out again. It killed me once or twice. Of course it's all about the controls - but I think some of it does take time to get use to.

The A button is there to make AAAAAAWESOME things happen. Shep rolling like she's having a seizure is pretty cool huh?

Yeah the game was really smooth, but bioware if you read this "A" on xbox DOES TOO MANY THINGS! This was a problem in ME2 as well and mapping roll to it is just over kill. Now i can't make a criticism without offering a solution, i would suggest making "B" the button to stick to cover. This wouldn't mess up the melee attack because you won't be using it when your trying to get into cover, and even if an enemy was in front of you the melee attack would take priority. personally i found myself reaching for "B" simply by reflex well playing the demo. Even if this is something you don't want as a default setting you could at least include a way to change it in the "XBox controller" section of the pause menu. Thanks for reading, and i'm really passionate about this topic so if anyone else has an opinion post below i would love to read it.
Sums it up nicely. The problem isn't so much with the controls but rather having everything bound to a single key (with no option to remap, whatsoever).
