Is It Just Me Or Are the Controls Terrible?

I've had trouble with the combat rolls mostly myself and the others were pretty easy, but I see BW took the lazy way again and tied the Space Bar to 4 or 5 commands. I hated that with a burning passion in ME2 and its back in 3 where duck/open/use/roll/skip are all tied to to same key....again. Are key bindings *that* hard to give people?

edit - word error.

Other than the annoying A --> cover vs roll ambiguity the controls work pretty well. One hint tho. I found it harder to aim well with camera speed maxed than in other FPSs. I had to dial it down to medium to get it stable.

Don't worry the demo was a during development build.

The build that went gold recently is by far better than what we've seen in the demo.

We just have to adapt, I rolled a few times when I wanted to take cover but it just takes getting used to.

I think it is a matter of getting used to it. I just played my First on hard setting and the only time I had trouble was the last fight against the Atlas (died half a dozen times before I figured out the tactic for this one). Tomorrow I try on insanity but I guess I'll do alot better because even in my first playthrough I started to get the hang of it at the end. I could say some bad things about the demo, but the action/gameplay is the best in the series so far.

Haha JeffZero.  You are the man.

Like you said, you can't judge controls until you get some practice with them.  I was frustrated by Skyward Sword's control scheme at first but after playing through the first 2 temples something just clicked and it became the most fluid experience of all time.  i imagine people are trying to fit the round ME2 control scheme into the square ME3 control scheme and they are getting frustrated.  I'll wait until I get some more practice in before I judge.

Maybe having more buttons than the "do everything" spacebar.

I haven't played ME1 in years and ME2 in months, and the controls were pretty easy to adjust to. Of course, it would be even easier if spacebar wasn't used to roll, take cover and select something. There are more than twelve keys on a keyboard. <_<

Same pretty much.  I did finish up my last 2 assignments on my last playthrough for ME3 import, but that was the first time I played the game in 8 months.  All the controls in the demo came easy save for the cover system.  Then I realized I actually have to pay attention to the cover arrow before initiating a roll/sprint action.  If you want to sprint forward from cover you can't have the arrow pointing sideways because you will roll to other cover.  You have to wait or get it to point forward before initating.

I find Spacebar being a universal button is underrated.  The fact is you don't want your fingers all over the place during combat.  Having spacebar govern all actions depending on proximity/usage of something, position and mouse direction is better for high pressure battles than pressing g for this, d for that, o for something else.  All your commandsare pretty much on 1/5 of your keyboard.  You can controll most combat commands ( 1-4 and 5 power hotkeys, WASD for movement, shift, squad controls, E and SPACEBAR) without moving your left hand or taking your right hand off your mouse.

As a PC player, how does one vault over cover without having to go into cover in the first place? Also, how does one grab an enemy from behind low cover to do the one-shot kill as seen in demos?

PC player here.

Controls are horrible. One key for roll, cover and sprint is laughable. Not to mention the controls are imprecise. PC keyboard has many keys...please take advantage of them, BioWare.

It's because a number of different actions are all assigned on the same button, and you can't change that.I don't know how the button layout works in consoles, but I play on a computer and having 5~6 different actions all in the same key when you got 114 keys available seems....
Unnecessary frustration

The problem isn't the scheme... as Gears incorporates the same roll/cover system. The problem is the polish/fine-tuning. It's not as precise as Gears yet.

I've been playing MP for the last four hours or so and had no real problames. It'll just take a bit of adjustment because it's new.

I haven't played Gears, but in ME3 it isn't only the cover and roll actions assigned to the same button. It's also sprint and interaction with npcs/objects.

So I end up trying to interact with a machine right in front of my face, but instead of interacting with it,Shepard covers behind it.
At other times I decide I want to start running left immediatly to get in to a distant cover spot, but instead Shepard rolls and I eat all the enemy's bullets on my face.

Consolistic one button cover, sprint, use becomes always become a source of issue.

I had this problem too, op

going into cover and sprinting are like the only 2 things I want to do with space bar, but every time i hit it Shepard was like "look at me I can do a summersault"

I'm hoping it's adjustable.
I felt like I was playing a bit of a mentally challenged version of Shepard in the demo compared to ME2 honestly.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the combat, but the controls were clunky as.. as something really clunky.
The combat roll, honestly, seems pointless to me still.

I'd like them to separate the use function, sprinting and rolling and cover from each other.

I currently use shift for running, rolling and E for use and both for cover if the situation calls for it.
So ideally it would be.
Shift: Running (when held) and rolling (tap)
Space: Go into and move between cover
E: Interact with objects and people.
