Just finished the demo, and had a blast, but there's one glaring problem: The controls are horrible. I found it extremely difficult and frustrating to control Shepard. He rolled when I wanted to sprint, rolled when I wanted to take cover, took cover when I wanted to activate a button, etc.

I was playing on 360 and the damned combat roll gave me hell since its mapped to the "A" button which also controls getting into cover, sprinting and damned near everything else.

At one point the Atlas Mech was lighting me up and I ended up rolling back and forth 3 times before I managed to get into cover.  Now I'm sure I'll get used to the controls eventually; but honestly I don't see the combat roll adding enough to outweight the frustration it causes.

Getting into cover needs to take priority over some silly little evasive move.  I can't remember having these problems in Gears of War even though that game had near identical controls.  The evasive roll just isn't balanced right.

This specific control which binds 4 commands together is a real piece of ***.  I've complained my guts about it in ME2. I will complain about it in ME3. I've never played GoW, don't care about it and when I asked if this specific command could make people get stuck in a "cover" position totally exposed to open fire on GoW like it does in ME2, people said "yes" in this forum.

They will never change it though. Not for ME2 and not for ME3.

Eventually I got used to it and after over 20 full runs with ME2 it doesn't happen that often but it still happens and since playing Insanity is unforgiven of stupidity, it is as much unforgiving of stupid controls scheme. But we get used to it and learn how to avoid it or how to rapidly escape the dumb deadly situation that this particular control scheme put us at. I haven't died from it in ME2 for a long time but it still pisses me off when it happens. Something like once or twice in a 50 hours full playthrough now.

My best suggestion, if you're playing it on the PC, remmap cover/roll/sprint/interact to Alt and put the powers/weapons menu on Space. It felt a lot more natural to me.

There's a reason Gears does it. Personally I never had much of an issue with that in ME2, nor will I have it in ME3.

On the other hand, inability to map more then 10 keybinds for powers pisses me off.

Controls are just different. With time you'll get used to them.
At least I did. :D

Hopefully, BioWare ironed out these issues in the final version, but if they didn't, they sure could learn a lesson from Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. The controls in that game are perfect. Shift to sprint, space + directional key to roll.

Shift: Sprint and enter/exit cover.
Space + Directional key: roll and context sensitive actions, like jumping over a gap.

Yep, I found the whole rolling thing horribly annoying, useless and it got me in trouble many times. Also hate it how they speeded up everything so it feels pretty arcadey and twitchy now.

Like I said, Dragon Age 2 debacle all over again.

It must be a different system thing coz my game ran at 60 fps and the controls were sharp and crisp - in fact much more responsive than ME 2 or 1.

I play on an XBox and liked the controls myself...Shep feels a lot looser and not so sticky, I have to get used to it, but it's definitely a big improvement.

I only had a problem with the spacebar doing so many things. I often made a roll when I actually wanted to take cover or start sprinting. Even though I did hold the spacebar and not just tap it it seemed to recognize it as a tap first and so I made I roll. Very annoying. I wish they would give us the option to change some of those controls to several keys instead of just one. or at least make the roll a doubletap instead of a single press. Of course you could then just do a roll by doubletapping the movement keys instead of the space bar.

The only thing that really needs fixing is sidereolling. Basically if you have left or right pressed and you start runnign you do a roll to the side instead. Since this is basically how I've played every game EVER, it isn't something I can get used to. The simple and obvious solution (which btw I wonder why they didnt do it in the first place) is to make it so you have to doubletap the sprint button to do the sideways roll, just like the forward and backward roll. Bioware, if you read this, please make this an option.

The controls are a bit grim, but again can't say it's a surprising revelation. I'd rather a double tap of WASD generated the barrel roll. I found trying to take cover resulted in Shepard imitating an agitated chimpanzee.

Pro-tip: Never use the sprint/cover/use/roll key to get OUT of cover. A simple tap on the backstep key (default S) will do it.

(PS: Does anyone know if we're supposed to use the few weapon mods we find in part II of the demo? If we are, how can we do it? I can't find a way to do it! Help! heh)

It takes a short time to get used to it. I've played through the demo 3 times, and have been playing multiplayer and at this point I have it down pat. You are able to be much more mobile and combat is alot more free-flowing.

The controls do feel weird on keyboard, which is why I wish it supported 360 pads. I kept getting stuck in cover. It's definitely a lot different than ME2 PC controls and will take some time getting used to.

It takes an hour or two to get used to, but then becomes more flexible than ME2. Though using A as a use button is annoying as hell.

"Let me push that button!"

I can't believe how many people are defending a clearly broken control scheme. If it takes "getting used to" even after playing with similar control schemes then it has been poorly designed. I'm just glad they delivered a demo so I had enough warning not to buy the game, desire to see the story be damned.

The problem with games these days is that gamers have lowered their standards.

On a sidenote, I would like to congratulate everybody in this thread for impressive use of punctuation - I didn't notice many spots at all that had a glaring lack of capitalization or full stops. A VERY rare thing on forums these days. Maybe there's hope for humanity yet.

I agree that their are too many things on the sprint button. But I can Live with it.
I wish their was a serperate COVER button. So tired of trying to spint and
taking cover mid stride. There are lots of tight spaces and somtimes you wanna just
run right through. But you won't because you're gonna end up in cover first.
Not the end of the world, but I wish someone would straighten this out already.
Games have had cover mechanics for a whole generation now. You'd think someone
would have down by now,

It's annoying when your trying to get into cover and Shepard just keeps on rolling into it like it doesn't exist.

Yeah the game was really smooth, but bioware if you read this "A" on xbox DOES TOO MANY THINGS! This was a problem in ME2 as well and mapping roll to it is just over kill. Now i can't make a criticism without offering a solution, i would suggest making "B" the button to stick to cover. This wouldn't mess up the melee attack because you won't be using it when your trying to get into cover, and even if an enemy was in front of you the melee attack would take priority. personally i found myself reaching for "B" simply by reflex well playing the demo. Even if this is something you don't want as a default setting you could at least include a way to change it in the "XBox controller" section of the pause menu. Thanks for reading, and i'm really passionate about this topic so if anyone else has an opinion post below i would love to read it.

Sums it up nicely. The problem isn't so much with the controls but rather having everything bound to a single key (with no option to remap, whatsoever).

*sniff sniff*

Something PC and console fans can agree on!

I thought this day would never come!

It's a common problem in games that add new elements to change up the overall control of the characters: you wind up bumbling through them because you're used to them not being there at all. To be honest, I thought the control was a bit wonky at first, too, but after getting used to it (on the 360, mind), I've found that Shepard's greater mobility is quite an asset and makes the game that much more fun to play.

I do think having a separate roll button rather than putting sprint and roll on the same one would make it easier to adjust to, however.

Bioware cant fix anything else the game has gone gold which means what we saw in the demo is probably what we'll get in the full game:D

I had the same issue adjusting, fingers crossed it just takes readjusting, but at the same token did Gears of War 3 take readjusting? the cover mechanics were so smooth you simply oozed into it, its a shame ME3 wont have the same mechanics.

The keyboard is here to stay, so I don't get why they're avoiding around 80 other keys.
