Who in Bioware does Liara represent as the Mary Sue?

She's not so much anyone's personal Mary Sue as she's their personal alien fetish fuel. The thought wasn't "I should make a Mary Sue of myself!" so much as it was "I should make a SUPER EASY TO SCORE WITH BISEXUAL CHICK who comes from a race of HOT BLUE STRIPPERS that'll have sex with ANYTHING and EVERYONE wants her and EVERYONE wants to be her friend but they can't have her because she has a crush on ME AND ONLY ME!"

^ So much  win

Like I said she's a Mary Sue.

A Mary Sue of who? Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation was a clear Mary Sue of Gene Roddenberry (No joke, Gene's middle name is Wesley) and he even stated Wesley was the character he mostly identified with. Who in Bioware does Liara represent as the Mary Sue?

Mary Sue simply means "A female character I don't like" for some people here.

Fortunately, that's not how Saphra uses it here.

No, he (she) just calls her a Mary Sue, without any explanation.

Co-frickin-sign. The asari-slobbering they insist on making is old as all hell.

I'll be sure not to take Liara on that mission (though she was admittedly very useful) on all Wrex careers and pretend it never happened (wonder what Wreav will say to her lol).

Won't be any issue in game for me either...Liara will be sitting idle on the ship throughout all missions I'm not forced to take her on.

Liara and Wrex were my main squad in Mass Effect 1...they helped Shepard to kill Saren, the thorian, geth, rachni etc.

The line makes perfect sense in my playthrough.

This is exactly the problem I have with Liaramancers. They assume that just because it makes sense for their Shepard, it makes sense for every Shepard. <_<

"In my playthrough." Everyone has diffrent views on ME3 everyone plays it diffrently, that's the best thing about it. But to tell you the thruth having Garrus in a tutu lecturing Wrex on how to bathe a geth would be normal in my playthrough :?

Well, then write a banter for Liara and Wrex that works for every playthrough. Liara/Wrex as main squad and Liara recruited last.

I am curious to see the result.

I don't get it. Garrus, Wrex, and Liara spent all of ME1 together and helped fight against Saren and the Geth. What's wrong with Wrex being nice to Liara or having some funny banter with Garrus? What's wrong with Garrus teasing Wrex over sitting on a throne for too long? Honestly, some people nitpick just for the sake of nitpicking.

As for the current "Liara is Mary Sue" discussion... no comment.

Liara and Wrex have a history, so it's okay for Wrex to be kind of sappy (for Wrex) about their reunion. Just look at these screenshots:

Pffft. I DARE you to go to the Liara thread and tell them that it didn't make sense for Bioware to force every Shepard to hug Liara in ME2. See what happens. It'll be FUN.

The relationship between Liara and Wrex is simply not explored in Mass Effect 1. They have two party banter (rather friendly), that's all.

For that it can't be called OOC in any way, shape, or form.

The line also bothered me when I first heard it, but I've rationalized the situation as 1) being out of context and 2) part of the camaraderie of taking out Saren. The Simpsons reference was a nice touch though.

The line that did bother me most of all, however, was Wrex's "Let's see them stop a Krogan airdrop!" Wrex is smarter than that. In fact, it's the whole scenario that follows the line that I don't like. "Let's see [this heavily armed group of Salarians who wouldn't hesitate to kill a Krogan and are already on edge] stop [a single Krogan] airdrop!" If Wrex had just jumped out of the ship and started growling threats at the Salarians without stupidly attacking them, then I'd be fine. Yes, he's a Krogan and is eager to fight, but he knows when and how to restrain himself.

Liara: I would prefer longer studies and fewer explosions.
Wrex: Nonsense, an explosion here and there is good for you.

An elevator convo in Me1.

This dosent surprise me. Liara got along with every one other than Ashley.

As I posted in the Liara thread, anyone who wonders how it is that those two can be friends, need only refer to Henry V:

And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Combat has a way of forging bonds that are as tight as family.  Considering all they've been through together, Wrex talking to Liara like she's his little sister is a nice touch of realism.  It also isn't out of character for Wrex, as that is totally in line with what we saw of him in ME2. He has a similar reaction during his reunion with Shepard.

I really have to ask.

Is this something you've experienced, or just heard second-hand? Because I'm aware of a lot of units in which combat didn't cover personal animosities.

Soldiers are professionals, by and large, and a good part of the training and conditioning is about being able to work with people you don't like. But the 'we're all friendly comrades once we fight together' piece is pretty silly.

I'm a former Marine.

Is everyone close? Of course not. In a typical company you are talking about 200+ personalities and occasionally, some personalities clash. Or you might have an incompetent Staff NCO or Officer that is hated. But it is a fact that *in general* the bonds forged in combat are as tight as family. That, and Wrex and Liara never displayed any personal animosity towards the other in Mass Effect 1. So it is neither out of character or a retcon, and a nice touch on the part of the wrtiers.

I'll briefly sum up what is really going on with all of those who are complaing about this line of dialogue from Wrex:

"I hate Liara. Why doesn't Wrex also hate Liara? Why, Wrex...TELL ME WHY???!!!!"

They are failing to realize that what the player thinks or feels is not necessarily the same things that characters in the story think or feel, including Shepard. I'm not crazy about Jacob, but I'm not going to get butthurt if Garrus fist bumps him on the reunion.

Can I just say that this line occurs in the middle of the game. Perhaps some stuff happens during the game that gives this line some context?

In my opinion I think it was really weird seeing Liara, Wrex AND Garrus together again, to be very honest I have actually gotten used to the fact that they won't together anymore. Damn you ME2!!! :(

I guess I am alright with all of them being out of character, they are involved in a big war with their family and friends dying. I would be out of character too if that happened to Earth.

That said thankfully easily avoidable line is easily avoided. I'll just bring Vega and Garrus with me and there won't be an issue.

^this.  With the exception of an e6 that ****ed his men like a $5 hooker, everybody in my old squad became very tight with one another, far overshadowing whatever personal differences and petty disagreements we may have had at the time.  I even came to blows with a one of them, but a couple years later, when we see each other we share a beer and laugh about it now.  Are we all best friends?  No.  But theres a strong sense of comradery.

Wrex saying something like that to Liara isnt excessive or unrealistic for two people who went through heavy combat together.  Whatever the player may think of liara, there's no reason Wrex wouldn't respect somebody who fought alongside him as part of Shepard's Krantt.   Also, saying that to Liara instead of Garrus (who's obviously more competent and experianced, combat wise),  while right in front of him turns it into a sublte, teasing insult.   "i suppose i can make room for you too, Garrus"  confirms that.

Whats more out of character is Wrex  losing patience, jumping out of the shuttle and slinging biotics around right away, and staring like a surprised idiot at the laser sights on his chest.  Somebody who's not only survived, but thrived in the deadly cutthroat mercenary world for centuries has a lot more sense than that.

The "this isnt about strategy or tactics"   line is the most out of character line in the entire series.   Its also one of the dumbest lines I've ever heard.      I can see Shep saying something more like " This isnt about battle lines or strategic objectives or acceptable losses, this is about surviving extermination."     But he's talking about  the attempted genocide of our species like its drunken bar fight.
