I'm not enitirely sure which one of these or if it's something different altogether (I've literally just googled a description of what I'm experiencing and these are terms that have come up) but I've noticed some pretty harsh shading in dark areas of the screen, particularly on Anderson's clothes in the intro. To add to this I when I tried to change the Brightness in the menu no matter how much I dial it down I can't see the "7" in the white area. I haven't had to change the Brightness settings in a game for years and my monitor has never given me any reason to suspect it wasn't caliabrated properly, does anyone know what could be going on here?
Cheers.

Got the same issue. Must be something with the latest nvidia drivers 295.51 incase you got those also.

I'm using an ATi card so whatever's going on isn't an Nvidia-specific issue.

I've taken an (admittedly crap) picture of the problem. Notice the inside of the airvent. This is at full in-game settings sans anti-aliasing so it's not the issue relating to lighting settings I've seen going around.

Okies, it has something to do with Dynamic Sahdows option, i got it fixed by turning that on.
You might need to enable/disable other options with MassEffect3DemoConfig.exe in your Binaries directory where the game is installed.
But try turning dynamic shadows on first.

I have the same problem.
I turned Spherical Harmonic Lighting on in the MassEffect3DemoConfig.exe, and it really helped. It didn't completely solve the problem, but now at least I can see Shepard when he's talking to the kid in the vent instead of his silhouette.

I got the blinding light bloom effect too. I was hoping to fix it by turning off the Bloom_Scale values in Coalesced.ini but they seem to have changed it to .bin so it can't be easily edited.

The banding isn't due to a low colour depth or anything, it's because of the game's post-processing and colour grading. It's very common to see crushed blacks in modern games, the intent being to make the image look more dramatic. This is especially true if a game does not use true HDR and relies on LDR or visual tricks to simulate higher exposure. However, it can also lead to visual artifacts and a loss in detail as you've pointed out.
tl;dr it's a console thing.
