just got Male human adept three times in a row with recruit packs and then topped it off with an engineer, Wasn't planning on trying them out but if the game says I should I guess I better do it...

edit: ok I get it, when you get a character several times it unlocks patterns and colors because the engineer unlock made it possible for me to select a secondary color, the adept could choose patterns and lights because I got three of that one.
