still its only a demo
oh please, that's what people always say. How much things get fixed after a demo? not much, take BF3 for example. In fact the release was worse then the demo/beta.
It's not solely about fixing. Most would say the demo is what you get. The fact is that demo play was handpicked and edited (by that I mean parts of second mission were gutted) by Bioware to be as spoiler free as possible. What causes the most spoilers? Dialogue. The parts of dialogue a bit more complex (but not by much) than what's in the demo. So it's hard to judge dialogue when dialogue was cut and avoided to keep spoilers at a low.

However, that isn't the point really since the OP is concerned with the writing of the dialogue itself. I don't see it since I find the dialogue realistic. This isn't final fantasy when everyone stands around for 10 minutes with people talking about love and heartbreak while the big bad wipes out the entire world. People are in a rush getting ready to meet some unknown force in huge numbers making a beeline for Earth. How many military officials do you think would be confident to meet such a threat in reality without being scared out of their minds? Especially if it supports a theory of someone you thought was crazy and ignored, which pertains to a genocidal unstoppable machine fleet?
Shepard knows it's the Reapers, knows Earth is not ready and knows it's pretty much futile to try and make a stand at that point. That's why you don't get Shepard delving into strategy etc. and instead giving a realistic assessment through one liner responses. The fact is there is nothing you really can but stay alive. Not to mention everything gets crazy much faster then they thought (fleets getting runover like roadkill, Admiral Hackett missing or dead, and moon getting wiped out within 5 mintues or so.) You actually see Shepard's jaw kind of drop when Anderson asks why Hackett hasn't warned them yet like "Uh... this is going really really badly real fast."
There was really nothing in there that said to me "Bioware is trying too hard with cliche writing." If I was there and wanted to convey the same message I would be saying the exact same things. If I saw a kid in a vent that was lost and afraid I would say one of the two things: "Get out of here and find some place to hide" or "Come with me (if you want to live) and stay down."

Exactly the same two options given to the player. I'm not sure what people want from the dialogue during the beginning mission save for some investigation options which of course could have been added. I think Bioware wanted to start out quickly with a bang and leave investigation for later. The same way ME2 starts out on the Normandy (with no investigation options) but in this case an actual mission. Note that both the escape Normandy play and escape Earth to the Normandy play happen before the Mass Effect 2 and 3 logos respectfully.
