I don't understand why Bioware didn't just keep the animations from the previous games. They were so much better.

The ME1 walking, sprinting, and shooting animations were just fine. They had rigs for male and female. They discard all that work so that shepard can have jellyfish legs and sprint like a gorilla.

...more like they discarded animation fidelity for the sake of implementing more stuff. Like the ability to use Kinect with ME3.

Or they could have just copy-pasted superior animations from ME2, Bioware why didn't you do that?
It's a very simple question.

That these ME2 animations just *might* take up more memoryspace than, for example, the tap-dancing Anderson animation didn't occur to you ?

I can't even begin to care about the animations.

Isnt it embarrasing that games like Batman AA/AC has 10X better animations with half the budget?

I don't know the budget for either of those games. Just like I don't know the budget for ME3. I highly doubt you know the budgets either. As such, saying ME3 has twice the budget is a little disingenuous. Regardless, no, I don't find it embarrasing. Different games with different priorities.

Virtual acting is not a priority for the ME franchise? That's new. Did you know that the animations in ME1 were one of the biggest wow factors at the time? Bioware did not only NOT improve in that regard like the rest of the industry, specially considering the bigger budget for each game, the animations have gotten worse. That should be a matter of concern.

Doesn't it occur to you that this game is released for PC?

+1

If it's actually true that they skimped on animations purely because of memory reasons, why didn't they put them back in for the PC version? As many people have said already, it's a matter of ctrl-c ctrl-v from ME1 and you're done.

It reeks of lazyness and indifference. Even if it's a demo. There's no bigger middlefinger to the PC audience than that...

the fact that no devs have commented on this is ridiculous... i hope the kinect compatibility was worth it, freakin bioware, or whatever else took up space that didn't allow for good animations in general!

I wonder what the odds are of Bioware improving the animations through a post-release patch.
Is it even possible?

...only if you work under the assumption that the problem is not console-hw related. You can't patch in more ram.

If you can't fit in animations in 8 gigs of ram then there are other problems with your game design.

I guess you can't really expect BW to go the extra mile for ~20% of their audience (PC consumers). At least this way another ~20% of their audience (360 Kinect gamers) can shout "Anderson, tap dance !" in the general direction of their TV.

At least we're not the only ones noticing the shody animation work. FiringSquad has done a ME3 PC demo review here, and on page three they say, quote, “The thing that really stuck out to me, as far as visuals go, are the awful animations, both in terms of overall character bodies and lip-synching. It’s probably on par with how it was in ME2, but after seeing newer games like L.A. Noire and Battlefield 3, it’s just so obvious and jarring when you see stiff transitions between a small number of pre-mapped gestures rather than a smoother, more natural flow of movement. Admiral Anderson looked almost like a stick figure when he's running around with you in the first level; his legs are moving like scissors and he's literally gliding across the floor! Then in the cutscenes, there’s little to no emotion expressed in faces when people are talking, and lips don’t move nearly as much as the jaw does, which kind of makes everyone look like muppets. Unlike the texture quality, animations aren't something that will likely change with the final game, which worries me a bit.”

They also mention the "one key for everything" issue, but don't seem to take note of the numerous other problems, like low FOV, the fact that Shepard now obscures almost third of the screen, or the lack of weapon holstering, but it's a start!

The animations aren't a deal breaker for me, but boy are those walk/run cycles dodgy. I'm more concerned that these animations may be indicative of a broader reaching quality issue in the final game. I hope I'm wrong.

You mean 500 mb of RAM. Textures, Animations, Sound, everything has to fit. Sound gets only a tiny bit of that RAM and is by far the most professional aspect of this game so far.

truth be told me2 animations were also awkward for casual dress shep (though not as bad as me1 in general), they only got better once you suited up, similar to me3.

The animations look hyper, and not realistic, but I wouldn't go all out calling them bad. I do indeed prefer the animations of the first two games after seeing some of the ME3 demo (as far as the main squad goes)

Some innovations and upgrades makes the whole thing crapped and there will be lots of dissatisfaction and fails about missed contents. like Sony 3D TVs ...

If they kept ME2 Graphic for ME3, no one would be angry about the results. But the game should have the appeal for the new customers.

I agree !! Character motion stiff and clunky !! I hope the game doesn't look and feel like that !! It would be a HUGE let down !! I'm a big Mass Effect Fan and i'm HOPING it's just a DEMO issue ! KEEP U'R FINGERS CROSSED !!Image IPB

Obviously a great move. They'll definently sell 1 billion copies now becasue of stupid Kinect.

Casting my vote and agreeing that the new animations (specifically the notorious sprint) look comical. I'm not hyperboling (yep, that's a verb now) and it's not putting me off the game any measurable amount, but it definitely made me go something akin to "really?.. really?!" when I first saw it.
I found I actually changed my entire playstyle to incorporate not having to ever run, just to avoid seeing it.

I'm going to simply register that whatever the animation quibbles are, I much prefer being able to change direction while running. You know, like a human being as opposed to a tank.

Anderson has a pole up his bum. I think that's his tactic.

Every character in ME3 has an invisible cloaked pole up their bum so it helps them poop faster when teh reapers arrives and scare them. Don't blame the run animation, blame the pole.
