however i totally disagree with the 720p thing all games should now run at 1080p its the standard, would you buy a hd film in 720p ??? i should hope not !

Try to see it from this perspective:

If the hardware isn't fast enough to run games at 1080p developers can
1) use 720p instead to lower demands on the hardware
2) reduce the graphics (textures, polygones, draw distance etc) to make the game less demanding
3) don't care about how fast the hardware is and just increase the resolution while the games runs choppy as hell, because the hardware can't handle it anymore
4) don't realease the game at all and wait for faster consoles

I think 1) is still the best choice. And games are not films.

You know that HD movies aren't rendered in real time , right?
On this console generation there is no standard of 1080p for 3D games like ME3, for example.
Maybe on the next gen we will have 1080p with 60 fps.

hang on a min im sure the standard for hd is 1920*1080 @ 60hz progressive scan also known as 1080p also the hardware is perfectly capable of 1080p gaming look at gt5 and also ff13 to name a few also there is a huge difference between 720p and 1080p firstly the actual res means 720p has less picture depth and quality where as 1080p has a bucket load more and then some i play me3 on my pc with a res of 1920*1200 @ 60hz (1200p) and the screen isnt upscaled from 720p that i can tell you. i think you need to realise that excuse doesnt wash with people no more and the shortcuts are getting a tad silly now

GT5 runs at 1280x1080, that's not 1080p (1920x1080). And in addition, it only uses QAA while if you play the game at 720p it uses the much superiour 4xMSAA which I would prefer.
Final Fantasy 13 runs at 720p. Only some of the pre-rendered cinematics are 1080p the actual game not.
If you are interested there are lists of actual resolutions of most games:
http://forum.beyond3...342&postcount=2
http://forum.beyond3...344&postcount=3
not many that run at 1080p compared to those who don't.

PCs are more powerful than a PS3 (depending on the hardware you put in ^^) and the game runs at whatever resolution you pick. But what does this has to do with the PS3 version?

a lot the ps3 has various hardware platforms from the old fat 60 or 20 gig models right up to the slim 500gig version most ps3 games are tuned accross the board im suspecting this isnt the case with mass effect
the pc version is optimised for its baseline game (minimum spec) then what ever you have in your pc that is above that allows the game to run faster.

Wait what has any of this got to do with the frame rate in the PS3 version?

And notice... I am running on an ssd drive on my ps3 and the game still interrupts during gameplay to load... unreal!

All this makes it look in all honestly like a product that was clearly from the beggining just a quick port to increase sales. It was not given the proper attention and care that we were promised and hoped for.

[/quote]
wow you're really an enthusiast ps3'3 fan. that ssd drive is expensive for some people like me.
btw i have no long loading time, no low frame rate [15-20 fps]. and i don't use ssd drive on my ps3

exactly , people please stay on topic. This isnt a debate on whether every game should run in 1080p or not. Our issue here is PS3 version. The problem isnt 720p. Both 360 and ps3 run natively at 720p. 360 can upscale it to 1080p , so can ps3 if you force it via the display options.

The real problem is the performance. Which is something that Bioware had to finally say something about it!!

I agree and I'm sorry for being off topic :(
I just thought it was a bit unfair to criticize something that is perfectly normal.

Here again.

I'm playing the digital version on a 250gb Slim console with no modifications (didn't change the HDD or anything).
I think the game runs a bit better than the disc version because loading times are not long and the citadel runs decent (not good, but decent).
Still, the game runs really bad in every cutscene (and even worse if there is action in the cutscene). The gameplay so far has good and bad moments. Though as soon as there are several enemies on screen it starts having problems
Adding an install option might help, but I can promise you that it won't be anything near to fixing the problem (at least, no non modified consoles)

As I said, in thing there might be some other problems. There was a part where gameplay managed to stay pleyable even with a lot of enemies, and reapers in the backround and all that. But then it went into a cutscene that was just a conversation and it was running at around 15fps- How can that be???, how can a game run a gameplay segment with a lot of enemies and IA and power and all that without much trouble but then starts running horribly in a cutscene with no action running with the same engine :S

xHezz90 wrote...

Still ypmud's first point of it not being broken is right. The game is playable it's just annoying and stuttery, don't get me wrong though I am not defending Bioware mucking up, and I still wish they would tell us when they plan (if at all) to fix it, but saying the game is broken is ridiculous.

Bioware promised us a premium meal, we got a piece of old bread. But it's still food

I mean, yeah the game isn't "broken" but it's also not acceptable. Of course I can finish it, but when the framerate gets in the way of the gameplay and doesen't let me enjoy the story (I mean, seeing action sequences in 15fps isn't really good) it's not acceptable and it's not whay I payed for.

ME3 has crashed my ps3 3 times now. I paid $$$ for a AAA title, not some basement indie dev's bugfest. (which I would still buy but would be more accepting of any technical flaws.) When you get into bed with EA and the technical quality of your products dips, wtf are we supposed to think?

Whether a HD install would really solve all the issues or not, I can't be sure, but I am 100% sure that not having one is bad, and the not having one is due to mandates to cut costs and absurd exec directives about "piracy." Monkey see, monkey do. There is zero reason to have ME2 HD install and not one for ME3. Zero. Especially since we can buy the full digital version off the PSN. I considered doing that, but BEING A FAN, I wanted the CE. And now my ps3 has crashed, again.

I want to know what ****ing genius thought it would be respectful and good for their product to run wholly off a blu ray stream. I want to know how many Bioware/EA employees have the game and play it on their PS3. I know if I worked there and released this I certainly wouldn't.

We want to know if/when/how this will be fixed. We didn't hurt you. We are your customers. Your fans. We buy your **** which pays your salaries. I already went through console hell this winter with my old ps3 until it finally died and I got a new one a month ago. My choice to get a ps3 doesn't hurt you, so why do you want to hurt my ps3? Why is it suddenly acceptable and cool for game devs to have their AAA release destroy a console within 3 weeks? Will you pay for the replacement machine?

Did any of you even think this through?

It's like we are living in a parallel dimension or something.
Bioware is worried about fan's that are complaining about how the game ends! Really!?
I'm worried about how the game starts!!
I feel like they made us all a favor to release it on ps3, and we have to deal with it as it is.

Seriously.

There's no "I'm innocent" in this. As guilty as Sony is for having terrible leadership on the PS3 throughout its lifetime and allowing games to come out for it without having mandatory HD installs, the publishers AND developers at the studios are all culpable too, if not more so. FFS, I put Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 in my PS3 and I sit through a 15min install. ME3? some tiny file thats finished in seconds. I wonder why ME3 crashes so much...hmm...

I wonder why we all have slightly different problems since we should have the exact same console. Or am I wrong? Has there been a change to the hardware other than the HDD size?

I for example have never had issues with some serious lagging as posted in a video somewhere above. The biggest problems are cutscenes. But I never had save game problems, ME2 import problem, characters facing something they shouldn't in a condo and so on.

This is weird, besides the game halting sometimes when loading (mainly in the Normandy and the citadel), i have not experienced framerate drops, only little sttuterings here and there (not enough to make a complain) and i have a non modiffied 180 gb Slim PS3.......

I'll say this... I'm pretty furious.... I owned Mass Effect at launch on 360, Mass Effect 2 on 360 as well... Then Bioware announced that Mass Effect 2 was coming out for PS3 running on the Mass Effect 3 engine, numerous websites reviewed it and said it was the "best" looking version of the game for consoles.. I preordered, and picked it up at launch.. Despite the audio issues (it would cut out dialog randomly) I enjoyed it enough to continue the series on the PS3. After preordering the game on PS3, and ignoring the demo as to not spoil anything for myself I boot the game up last night and wrestled with the awful framerate, and again... audio issues. Originally I had a PS3 80 Gig Fat, but it died sometime last summer, so I backed up my saves and purchased a new 320 GB Infamous 2 bundle... Guess what, streaming from the disc is ridiculous.. The obvious lack of quality in Bioware games has gotten so bad that I won't be purchasing anymore unless this is corrected. Sure I could go grab a 360 version of the game, but I shouldn't have to.. Add my name to the list of those experiencing the terrible frame rates.

To answer some questions, yes, each model of ps3 is slightly different than other models. Heatsinks, motherboards, blu rays can all differ. So I get that its a pain to develop for, not only because the os is not windows lite but for all the differing hardware too. But still, you'd think the solution would be to just give us a sizable install file and give the ps3 models with all their differing parts a break.

Instead, these days, we get the back hand slap of every multi platform release streaming from the blu ray. It might honestly be memory related as I'm not sure exactly how the ps3 allocates resources, it might actually draw faster from the blu ray and its cache but, still, the fact that this part of the machine is easily the most fragile, it speaks volumes about studo and publisher attitudes towards consumers to put it through all the stress of literally running the entire game.

Which again, makes me blame Sony for all of this too. Tighter restrictions on what can and can't be published for the console would prevent ass hats like the clowns in charge of EA from saving a buck at the cost of our lasers. I'm pretty sure if push came to shove Sony could have told Activision to **** off. I don't think Bobby Kotick would have swallowed the lost revenue from COD being just an xbox/pc game. He can cry and posture all he wants about the percentage of ps3 units he ships, but guess what, they still ship them. And like I said, this industry, like so many others in this country in modern times, is all monkey see, monkey do. If COD can get away with blu ray streaming everything, then so can we.

****, maybe it just saves Activ/EA some extra programming salaries. While its been heavily implied that Micro cut Acti a very good deal to ensure the ps3 version of COD was and remains inferior, I'm pretty sure they didn't do the same with EA. But who the hell knows. Again, the gamer is the only one who suffers here. Its like a planned destruction of a console I've never seen anything like it.

Back in the day devs just abandoned or never got on board things like the Saturn or Turbographx or whatever. The ps3 situation is so bizarre. Go back to any game made before 2009 and you will find a nice chunk of install file. But 2010-2011+ everything is blu ray streamed. Pisses. Me. Off.
