So of all the 'metal' in advertising , they use some alternative rock as the final song? Why?

Maybe it's just me and the fact that I didn't look at any of the advertising that used metal (or any music at all - print ads and reviews got me into this game), but the fact the ending theme was a 'modern' piece was jarring to me overall. The look and feel of the credits, as well as all the music in the game, had me expecting an orchestral theme. I found it pretty disappointing.

They're trying to attract hipsters, because romantic/classical symphonic music is old fashioned and nerdy. Not nerdy in the cool ironic way, but the bad "I have a refined sense of taste and appreciation for aesthetic" kind of elitist snobby way.

I think one song that should have been included but wasn't(i'm disappointed mind you), is the Sacred Ashes trailer song... that heavy beat and stuff is badass.

I like a lot of 'alternative rock' bands. I grew up on... oh god, I don't even want to look at the Wikipedia definition of rock as it'll just confuse me. Let's just go with I like alternative rock, and I like gothic rock and 'britpop' (which according to wikipedia, is a rock genre!... god, the world confuses me). I'm even okay with some of the more recent (...I say recent, but I'm talking about the 90's) stuff that has come out that's apparently 'alternative rock'.

But 30 Seconds to Mars? Really?

If they wanted rock, why not grab a Gothic Rock band that has some fantasy-ish sounds? Or go back to the trailers and get some Symphonic Metal? Gah.

It is, and if you're trying to mainstream fantasy, every little bit helps. 30 Seconds to Mars is a respected band, and while I dislike them personally, Just go on youtube, look up 'Dragon Age This Is War' and read the comments. 9/10 are favorable.

Plus the song was part of a new album that wasn't released when DAO was released, so it was also a promotion for the band.

Anyway anything with fantasy-ish sounds is not mainstream or remotely so. Bioware should stick to mass appeal than the nerdy few who post on their message boards.

How does metal go with medieval fantasy? Alternative rock(if it's not pearl jam and other bands) is garbage, but metal and fantasy? What?

You obviously never heard of Folk Metal. (Or Viking Metal, Pagan Metal, Battle Metal, etc. etc. etc.)

I stand corrected. Some of those scandinavian bands really do fit the genre. I suppose my definition of metal is skewed.

You clearly need to listen to your Zepplin and Dio.

And yet, your post shows you clearly fail to understand the nature of the complaints about this music. Shall I explain it or would you like to work on it yourself for a while?

Also, saying fantasy isn't mainstream (within the gaming culture of course) is completely laughable. How many fantasy RPGs exist compared to something sci-fi, like Mass Effect? How many people play WoW?

I've no interest to spar with you and could care less about your complaints. I was merely stating that I honestly believe Bioware needs to aim at the mainstream and stay there with all of their franchises. Dragon Age/Mass Effect, only excepting Star Wars for obvious reasons. No it's not perfect, but every little bit helps.

Well you managed to justify the complaints that the song is out of place and feels like nothing more than an advertisement, and doesn't fit the game. Good job?

Good sir, I said fantasy-ish. I mean fantasy-ish music as an above poster stated. Blind Guardian is not close to mainstream and I know you know this. Things like that should be kept as far from games like this as possible.

Great point on WoW however, if anything mainstreamed fantasy, it did. [Mr. T ad lol]

I wasn't talking about Blind Guardian. I was talking about symphonic music in the vein of classical and romantic composers which would mesh thematically with the game, as opposed to some modern rock band.

It is fascinating to find people complaining about this when you actually have to sit through some other song in the credits before This Is War will play. Im sure Bioware did it so you dont HAVE to listen to it if you don't want to. And if you do, and choose to complain about it, well don't be surprised when it's taken with a grain of salt and we get more Marilyn Manson trailers for DAO2.

Why would Bioware need a mainstream song for the end though? I doubt anyone bought the game just for credits song.

Butterflies and Hurricanes or Sing for Absolution would probably have fit better.

I dunno... Winds of Plague with their keyboardist (She's hot... and does an amazing job at it, take a look at the first 2 songs on their newest album The Great Stone War. If anything.. atleast the second one, Forged In Fire.) makes for a really good Metal Band to be used in Fantasy Genre's. I always found a massive appeal when you mix Orchestras with Metal. Check them out atleast, tell me what you guys think?

Ah, Muse! I love them - I do think "Sing for Absolution" would have been appropriate in the closing credits too.  I'll probably be stoned for saying this, but I listen to a lot of alt rock and a fairly wide variety of other things (Muse, The Mars Volta...Damien Rice, classical music - yes, I am eclectic), and I used to listen to more metal. I like to think I've evolved a bit musically, but I was fine with the 30 Seconds to Mars - thought the song seemed apropos at least.

For some reason however, I can see "Delicate" and/or "Volcano" by Damien Rice being played if you get one of the bittersweet romance endings (or the Alistair sacrifice perhaps). Oops, we were talking about the closing credits music... uh, forget I ever mentioned that. <.< These are not the droids you are looking for!

Manson has never and will never be metal. Seriously, his music is alternative. You are complaining about using a (non)alternative crappy band too replacing a (non-metal)alternative manson.

Some of his music was ok, but it was all a show to sell to that particular audiance.

There were a lot of good alternative bands in the 90s btw, Alice N Chains, STP, its not a bad genre. People just assume other crap music was alternative.

I would of gone with Nick Caves "Lay me low" since I took the heroic death ending.

And I'd rather that than some crappy alt rock music.

Also, Equilibrium, Ensiferum, Turisas and especially Nightwish, would fit Dragon Age a LOT more than Rock.

I think Amon Amarth would be more fitting albeit high dose of viking stuffs. A song like Cry Of The Black Birds seems to fit right in with several cutscenes.

I agree that the alt rock song was an absolutely atrocious choice especially in that it annihilated the the mood created by the moving "I am the one" as I was basking in the melancholic aftermath of the ending. Something akin to Mass Effect's Faunts (congruent with the game's atmosphere and spirit) would have been infinitely more preferable.
