I hate/dislike the chantry so much in this game.
Main reason is i am against any kind of religion en the chantry reminds of the christians in medieval times.

All this time hearing bless the maker makes me wanna hit those people in the face.

They have there templars to hunt down "bad" that wont listen to them and lock the others up in a tower so they can keep them under controll
Knight templar and the pagans anyone?

Also they forbid other magic that they dont approve, preventing mages to discover new helpfull spells with blood magic.
Again alot like the church in old times that burned witches for there dark magic (research).

Alot of other things i can say but i wont as i probaly offend alot of people then.

I must say tho they did a good job with giving this a medieval feeling with this but more reason for me to hate the chantry.
Hoping to 1 day be able to play as darkspawn and slay them all.

Now my only concern is if my new "evil" char should do the chantry board Q for the gold or not.

I suppose it's good that the game bought out a strong emotional response from you. Means Bioware are doing their job well. :D

Ack! I was just thinking along your lines last night while playing in dwarf city and faced with helping a certain chantry fella spread the word.. It went against everything in me to just play along and do 'the right thing' for sake of the game flow and extra xp.

Ah well. But yes, more than once I've hovered over the last listed dialog option (the usually sardonic response).

Well, if you hate them, I guess you have to ask yourself if your character is going to sacrifice his or her principles for some of their 'dirty money'.

Maker preserve!

Haha, I know what you mean. However, fortunately theres plenty of opportunity to tell people to go rub their religion up their backside, at least for my elf bloodmage ^^

Let's take the X-men scenario and assume magic users exist. They can wipe away entire civilizations with a click of their fingers, and they're not being watched, regulated or kept in check by the government. Would you be happy with that?

We'd be dead by Sunday.

But what about the notion of a suppressed people becoming a jaded and more driven to turn-the-tables people? (or the bad guys in x-men?)

That's because, in DA Universe, Mages used their magic to forge an empire and control everyone.  And they harvested the population to fuel their blood magic.  The Chantry has it's flaws, but living under the Mages Imperium was far worse, and far more controlling.

Also they forbid other magic that they dont approve, preventing mages to discover new helpfull spells with blood magic.

Blood magic fueled by slaves is only helpful to the mage.  Also, lol.  Witches were not persecuted scientists, they were adherents to a less popular (and equally corrupt) religious system.  When they were on the top of the pile, they burned people who disagreed with them.

I've tried to find flaws in the Chantry in each playthrough, and I can't justify it from a human perspective (Dwarf and Elf are easy - it's not their culture).  The vast majority of Chantry folk you meet are out to help others (as opposed to the blood mages and apostates you meet), and has been accepted by the wider population without forced conversions.  Also, there are little things in the game that show you there is a measure of truth to their claims, such as Andraste's ashes actually being able to heal the Arl.

Drakes right. There is always going to be people in power who abuse it. Be it The Chantry or Magi.

I wouldn't be so certain about that, if I were you - clueless, naive girls lack her skillset.

Vladix I felt the same way. I myself am atheist, but I still feel that religion is important for people, and only ever push my thoughts on religious folks unless they try to do it to me.

The way I look at it, if believing in god will prevent you from going on a murderous rampage (as some believe only god can give morals), by all means, BELIEVE!!

To JensenBakura: Please try to avoid spoilers. I haven't gone through the entire game nor read a lot of the codex for the parts I have. I plan to, though. What you mentioned above would have been nice to read about ingame.

Forming a mage resistance would only justify the people's fear in their eyes.

I'd like to add that I'm not saying it's the moral choice. But nobody in their right mind is going to live peacefully next to a guy who can throw bridges around. It's just human nature to fear the unknown, and fear quickly leads to hate.

And this is another part of me that loves Dragon Age so much. The fact that you can either really hate something, or love it. I too dislike the Chantry a lot and see them as more evil than many things in Dragon Age. It is a matter of perspective and perception. But hey, you're more than free to disobey the Chantry in this game, and my Mage didn't hold to any of their laws either.

Actually they burned people who a) likely thought they no longer had any value to thier neighbors and B) volunteered in many of the areas for the 'honor' of bringing good fortune to their villages and hamlets..

Which incidently is exactly like a certain Christian myth...*gasp* :innocent::devil:

The Chantry are, for better or worse, Christendom, or for lack of a better term, Andrastedom. They are cruel, dogmatic, calculating and ever ready to justify each atrocity as the will of benevolent deity. However, they also provide a place of refuge for the needy, arouse the fervor and support of legions, and give a large portion of the population a reason to wake up in the morning every single day of their beleaguered existence.

For ill or gain, they play a fundamental roll in the politics of several nations, Fereldan, Orlais, Tevinter, etc. They place a check on a dangerous subset of the population, namely the mages, brainwashing half of them into believing their poor beasts riddled and poxy with sin.

Of course, the Circle of Magi equates to the grand circle of fail. Utterly pathetic sheep worthy of the hell rained down upon them. Use the Chantry, play the game, have them eating out of your hand, or scorn them entirely and light frakking Chanter's Board on fire.

My opinion? Long live the maleficar! Join me as we take a collective ****** on the bloody mud that is Andraste's Ashes, dancing on the charred remains of the entire holier-than-thou triumvirate, Alistair, Wynne, and Leiliana. Afterwords, we can play a lively game of hunt a templar through a forest. But the true beauty of it all, is seeing the look on Kolgrim's face when you blow his idiot lizard god out of the sky.

Then we can- hold up, repeat that? The Chanter's Board quests give how much extra xp? Screw it. Bless the Maker and His Bride!
