Am I the only one that actually wants to pay for a massive expansion or two?

The thing I don't like about DLC is I feel it's bringing us closer to a future where you could be paying less than $1 for a piece of gear to use in the game. Or $1 for a new location/room. Do you see what I mean? It's really breaking the game down to a microscopic level and is annhilating the immersion of it, so to speak. I don't want to view the game in its constituent parts. I dislike this. :\\\\ I dread the day when there's a DLC list where you tick the boxes of what you want.. "oh a new npc, and that dagger looks nice, this building is neat.." Maybe some people are for this, but I truly am not. Is this the quality we want?

Anyone played The Witcher? If I recall correctly, and I may be wrong, when CDProjektRed released the Enhanced Edition, the people who had the original game could download this EE for free. It was pretty humongous, but it was a really generous gesture by the company to bring more value to the customers. I think that may have even included 2 side stories too, again, if my memory doesn't fail me.

Or worse.  You buy a game for a $1 and then each level is more and more.

Bioware (EA) doesn't care what you have to say or think though, they just care if they get paid.

Evidence please. Not opinion, not conjecture, Evidence.

All the ressources being wasted in ridiculous 30-mn long lootfests are not put to contribution for an expansion, though.

But those resources aren't being wasted, they are generating income.

It doesn't seem like a rip-off, but it is. Also, to the people saying "then don't buy it", although I haven't see anyone here say that, that's not working because as a Dragon Age fan, I want more content, I just want to stop being ripped off. Give us proper content, charge for it and i'll buy it.

They didn't advertise something, then sell you something else. You paid for exactly what you got. If you feel that you got ripped off, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

I want meaty DLC and more meaty expansions.

Why does everyone assume you can't have both? Even the OP mentions Oblivion, which last time i checked, has both DLC and an expansion pack.

I'd love an expansion pack or two, but I also like DLC. The way i look at it, more content is more content, regardless of how you slice it up.

This is the type of thing I want, yeah. Either as a hefty DLC or as a proper expansion.

I definitely want full expansions, especially if we get to travel around the Thedas. A full expansion would give us more time, content and a proper storyline, where as DLC is usually short and a bit more lacking in story and content.

I completely agree. The reason I feel so cheated is because BioWare thinks that by masking the size of the DLC with 'lower prices', they can put out crap and make us think that, oh it's actually quite worth it... selling us 10minute DLCs for 1dollar each, and putting out 100 of these, is basically making you pay 100bucks for 6hours.

It doesn't seem like a rip-off, but it is. Also, to the people saying "then don't buy it", although I haven't see anyone here say that, that's not working because as a Dragon Age fan, I want more content, I just want to stop being ripped off. Give us proper content, charge for it and i'll buy it.

You mean 100bucks for 16.7hours.

Anyways, I wouldn't mind paying a few hunderd bucks next 2 years for DLC and expansion packs.

Yes, but what we're currently getting is NOT worth it.. Spell Tomes costs 80microsoft points. All the 20min DLC from Bethesda costs 240 points, not 560 or 800.

So you buy the base game for $1. Then buy the parts that interest you, each one to $1. Price aside and depending of parts offered, "buy your game as you want it" sounds good to me. XD

Seriously, go indie. Big companies (publishers most commonly, who else is to blame for silliness in preorder bonuses if not?) try to find as many ways as possible to increase revenue. Factors like piracy, internet and greedy capitalists (too mention just 3, specially the third for Activision) are some of the possible reasons of the DLCs of big games. And the only real issues with DLC are: make them work (took some game and DLC reinstalations to make Warden's to work for me), internet dependence (forget about installing the game AND the DLC in a computer without such luxury) and the difficult balance between content and price. And only the last one is really difficult.

But a good expansion pack is just too sweet. Specially because in these kind of games means a whole new story (or following the previous) and/or something more solid. And feels more epic.

Look at that last e-mail talking about a new ring for the next round of marketing. They list 3 categories of dlc.

Add-ons : Soldiers peak and Shale are examples of this

Expansion packs: We don't have any yet. It's only been a month since release for gawds sake!

Items: bonus junk used for marketing that really does nothing for the game anyway.

And look at what happened to them. Their holding company has been sold...

... and as far as I know The Witcher 2 doesn't have a publisher Image IPB

Back on topic: I would gladly pay for a big expansion. So far I haven't bought any premium content.

I think you guys are forgetting something...

Bioware is not an independent company anymore, it's a brand name of EA. Now, the core Bioware developers still have some independence, but if you were in their shoes, would you rather work on a long DLC expansion pack, or start planning the sequel or another project?

It's not going to be "Bioware" (meaning the core game development team) making DLC most likely, it's going to be "EA." The only Bioware-made DLC so far has been the Stone Prisoner, which was cut content from the original game.

Thus, I don't have tremendously high hopes for what's going to come out as DLC. Will it be fun? Probably yes. But not groundbreaking, and probably not continuing any unfinished story lines from the main campaign.

Uhm.

The game just came out, and was years in the making. Not to beat the dead horse (like glue hasn't been made from the "DLC sucks" crowd, you know?) but you expected Knights of the Nine or Shivering Isles (the only expansion pack for Oblivion) to come out at the RELEASE of DAO? KotN was 8 months after Oblivion came out, SI a year.
Warden's Keep and Stone Prisoner are similar to Oblivions DLC like the Mage Tower and Thieves den, except, you know, that you get a storyline to playthrough instead of just a base.

Bethesda has no expansion packs for Fallout 3, and they haven't announced whether they are making any (they are passing the next Fallout game to Obsidian, more or less the creators of Fallout and Bioware's favorite "do the sequel" team - while it seems they might be focusing on a (ugh) Fallout MMO). EDIT: I double checked - it appears that the MMO is not Bethesda, and that there is some word that Bethesda is going to do a Fallout 4 at the same time that Obsidian is making the Vegas Fallout game.  Weird.

Bioware is new to the DLC, really (do the two freebies for Mass Effect count? I guess), and the fact you had stuff to purchase at release should be cause for celebration. It isn't like the DLC was the end of the game (like, oh, Broken Steel.)

I'm sorry for everyone who feels that the DLC isn't worth it - I truly enjoyed it.

---

All that said - yeah, I'd love a full-fledged expansion. Don't mind the DLC, though - if it looks interesting, I'll get it. If it doesn't interest me, I won't.

As someone who has worked in the video game industry, I can tell you with a fair degree of confidence, that DLC is in, and expansions are on the way out.

This is not to say that there will be no DLC content the size of a traditional expansion pack, but the shift is already happening from the traditional retail model of PC game distribution to online only distribution.

Within the next few years, you will begin to find AAA titles that forgo retail distribution all together in favor of download services like Steam, Impulse and Direct2Drive.  From a financial standpoint it makes sense, and frankly you can already see it happening as retailers continue to reduce the shelf space assigned to PC games.

Honestly, have you looked at PC games in a Game Stop lately?  Most times you are lucky to find a single shelf with mostly older titles they haven't been able to sell off yet.

You can look to the past all you want.  You can say X RPG had this, or Y RPG had that.  But you will be avoiding reality.

DLC is the way things are going to be.  If you want expansion sized content, stop trying to protest against all DLC, and concentrate on letting them know you want large expansion sized DLC, with an  expansion sized price.

But don't expect one any time soon.  Expansions are generally only released once the initial buzz for a game has had a chance to die down, and sales have slowed.  Usually this is 6 months or more after initial release.

I would love to get an xpac, but realy it will be a while for that to happen. I meen how long did it take them to put out the NWN xpac and then we got 12 hours of content and 12 hours of dekin singing the DOOM song. I suggest everyone just be patient and the xpac will be out.

Yea, and as soon as you get your expansion, you'll be crying about how it isn't this or that and that you'd like to see another one or maybe that you'll "never buy another _insert developer here_ game". This mentallity is tiring. We all want to keep enjoying the game, DLC or Expansion, doesn't matter to me.

I'm fairly certain that Bioware will be doing both DLC and expansions. This concern was brought up in the recent developer post announcing the Return to Ostagar DLC. Someone referenced a post where a dev said that for Neverwinter Nights, both premium content AND expansion packs proved to be worthwhile business models and that expansion packs actually proved to be more successful than premium downloads. So that bodes well, I think.

I'm all in favor of DLC if it leads someplace...a set of, say, two to four hour downloads in a coherent story delivered every couple of months would be very cool, for example.

I'm happy with my Warden's Keep purchase and I'll certainly be purchasing Return to Ostagar. I'll be a bit disappointed if the DLC team keeps releasing only short missions or item packs, though. I'd like an episodic mission, or perhaps something that adds non-story content (skills, talents, etc.). Maybe even something to make that "Other Campaigns" menu option light up!

That all said, I'm a pretty big fan of expansions, too. I'd have mine pre-ordered the day GameStop put it up on their webpage. The collector's edition, if at all possible.

DLC keeps you interested until the full blown Expansion can come out. If the game has sold well, you'll get an expansion.

I like the notion that DLC helps fund expansion development. Whether or not its true depends on how they're budgeting things and how well the DLC sells.

I will never understand this mode of thinking that it can only be one way or the other. It would not surprise me if their plan is to provide both - different levels of dlc far as cost and quantity goes and eventually having an expansion or two.

Which is fine by me.
