*** I'm going to keep the below spoiler free, I'll give my opinion on the demo without actually discussing what happened on the demo*****
Yesterday after work I downloaded the demo with a few concerns on my mind
1. For me ME is all about the story and I didn't want that spoiled by playing the demo. I started playing ME after the release of ME2. After reading reviews etc, I played ME1 firstly to get the full experience. I was blown away and played the two games back to back. Part of the reason I think I enjoyed it so much, was I knew next to nothing about the games before playing them. I wanted the same from ME3
2. There has been allot of negativity on this forum around the demo, allot of it unfounded I suspected, but still enough to get me somewhat fearful that ME3 may not be the jewel in the Xbox 360 crown that I always felt it would be
Thankfully my fears were unfounded on both counts
The demo is split into two parts, the introduction and a small mission. I think this is an excellent formula. Like in ME2 (ME2 - Shepard wakes up in the Cerberus base - "Shepard grab the pistol" etc) the intro brings you through some of the controls etc in game, while also setting the scene for the rest of the game. There's combat in there but its more so designed to get you used to the controls rather then sampling the real in game combat mechanics, for that the small mission will allow you a proper taste. In all I would say the single player demo has about an hour of actual play (if your taking your time)
The Intro
I absolutely loved it plain and simple. I'll hold my hands up and say I'm a huge ME fan, but that doesn't mean I blindly go along with everything. I hated the opening to ME2 in terms of the concept. Shepard dying and being brought back to life never sat well with me, and never will. This intro I felt was perfect to set the scene for a Galactic war. I felt we saw a different Shepard. In the past (taking away chosen conversation paths) he always seemed to be a "fight the good fight" do your duty type of guy. Now it would seem the effects of ME1 and ME2 have had a considerable effect on him. For me this is a good thing, scratch that an excellent thing
The "Mini Mission"
This was a nice compact mission where you got to take the new combat mechanics for a test drive. I always struggle to get to grips with new mechanics, and of course I struggled with these as well. I firmly believe these were just teething problems when trying out the new mechanics. To put this into perspective, I struggled more with the changeover from ME1 to ME2 and now I can pretty much waltz through insanity with any class. Did I pick up the joypad and breeze through it? No but I really wasn't expecting to. It is a change, and applying ME2 tactics will most likely not work in ME3. If you sit in cover stationary the Enemy will come after you, but again that's a good thing. The only slight complaint I would have is I did find the aiming + slightly hard to distinguish against some backgrounds. Its a minor thing and it could simply be a case of not being used to it
Are there Spoilers?
There are tiny spoilers. Obviously you will know where the game opens, and some details of small mission. What I would say is that if you have seen the ME trailer there is nothing in the demo that you haven't already seen. There are NPC's present, but they don't reveal anything meaningful. My own opinion is that if Spoilers are making you think twice about playing the demo, you have nothing to worry about
I read allot of comments on the boards yesterday and below are my opinion on some of the comments made
* The writing is poor
- Firstly for the intro, it is just that an intro. Consideration has to be given to allot of players who are jumping into ME for the first time. That's a huge part in the purpose of the intro.
- Secondly even though this was an intro, I feel the writing was excellent. It set the scene, set the tone and planted some seeds for the future game. There was one line by an NPC that actually gave me goose bumps. In my opinion it was genius in three words
* The graphics/animations are sub-par
- I point blank don't get this. I thought they were excellent and vastly superior to ME2
* The game was too linear, there was no scope for exploration
- Again going back to the fact this is an intro, new players have to be taken into account. On top of that, for experienced players there are changes there. I don't want to be wandering around the place lost while I'm trying to get to grips with the basics
- Secondly and more importantly for both sections, exploring or wandering around would be illogical quite frankly ridiculous given the context of what is going on. That's not to say its not present elsewhere in the game
* Shepards responses, and the range of responses offered were terrible
- Its important to note that for the demo, allot of options may have / have been removed to avoid spoilers. I for one am happy about that as I don't want the game spoiled
- For the intro section, I don't think there should be major decisions to be made or anything like that, these should come a bit later in the game. I mean do we really want something catastrophic happening based on a decision made in the first ten minutes of the game? Again there are new players to consider
In terms of the multi-player, I'll post my thoughts in that section
So overall I simply can't wait for ME3. My hope and expectancy has always been that ME3 would be a great game, a fitting end to the greatest video game trilogy in history (my own opinion). I also hoped that ME3 would go down as the defining game of the Xbox 360 platform. After playing the demo, I still believe and hope this happens and I'm even more convinced now that it can
