After I played for few hours the game start to slowdown no freeze clash or anything just really slow and it happens the same way in lowest to highest settings. Only solution so far is Restart the pc it's really anoying when you have to restart your computer every two hours just to continue playing the game. My quess is that maybe my system is only XP SP2 so if anyone would have this same problem or have the solution a fix or trick anything I wil be very happy to hear.

My system
Windows XP SP2
Pantium D 3.40 Ghz
3.00GB of RAM
Direct X 9.0c
Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT 512MB
Dragon Age is patched to 1.01

Hmm. It sounds like it might be a memory leak. If that is the case then I'm not sure there is anything you can really do on your end since that would be caused by the game's programming, IIRC. Or perhaps your RAM is faulty, yet if you aren't experiencing similar issues when running other applications/games that would seem to rule that possibility out.

I've noticed the occassional slowdown in-game and also during some cutscenes now and again. It's usually over in a split second so I don't consider it a big thing, although on occassion it lasts several seconds. Regardless, so far my system has quickly stabilized and picked up speed again. Could be the amount of data that is being shifted around, or again it might be due to a bit of non-optimized programming or a memory leak (my money is on the latter).

Any other takers?

System specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00 GHz
OCZ 4 GB DDR2 1066 MHz
Sapphire ATI HD 4870 512MB GPU
ASUS P5Q-E motherboard
26" LCD monitor running at 1920x1200 resolution
Corsair TX650 PSU
DirectX 10.1
Windows 7 64-bit OS
"Dragon Age: Origins" patched to 1.01b

Its been documented already that multi core processors or processors capable of multi-threading are having trouble with threads been released, the only known quick fix at the moment is to bring up the task manager and use it to set the core affinity to one core only, generally to CPU1, since the D is a multi threading processor I'm not sure you can do anything until Bioware fixes whatever is causing the problem with not releasing threads once done with them.

Tolgabar.. you are a lifesaver..

I have been reinstalling and formatting my comp for a week now wondering why the hell doesnt my games work correctly in my XP windows.
Seems I had that exact problem in all my other games aswell, so you just put my mind at ease after week of useless fights and fustrations 'bout softwares.
*edit* actually my problem came up having lag spikes every other minute or so, but cleared with the same thing*

Off to enjoy smooth playing DAO finally, thanks man.

Setting the affinity manually does indeed help. The only other problem is that Dual Cores cannot handle the game for a long time on a single core. At least my pc and a couple of my friends have this problem.

Be lucky you only have to restart every 2 hours... :/

I have the same problem, only I don't have to restart my PC I just have to restart the game. It's an obvious memory leak issue, the load screens get longer and longer. The patch seemed to make it worse, I ended up having to re-install the game because it would even slow down until it locked up during dialogue sometimes after installing the patch (always at the same places as everyone else, Landsmeet and scene with Alister after, Liliana plot encounter, ect).

My advice is to run it in compatability mode and set affinity in the task manager (alt+control+delete, right click daorigins.exe, then set affinity). If that doesn't work, uninstall the patch and try again.

The more I read on the tech threads, the more it seems I got off easy. The worst I've had to deal with are/were non-functioning DLC downloads which has now been fixed thanks to the generous assistance of various unofficial guides posted by other posters.
While I have experienced the occasional slow down as previously mentioned, it has only been momentary in nature and I have not had to quit the game nor reboot my machine. Only once did my game lock into a deep freeze and that was after leaving it in a dialogue cut-scene all night after I fell asleep which is not a result I consider to be worthy of genuine critique on BioWare's part. The DLC and other errors/issues I've read about however, are!
