For my first run on the full game I think I'll go with Action. I know crazy, right?!

I didn't think it would work. But, you know what? I gave it a try on the demo last night and I absolutely enjoyed it. It definitely has a faster flow to it which quite honestly matches the gameplay pretty well. That, and it just felt sooo sooo cinematic.

So, I started thinking. Maybe I'll do my first run with Action to get the canon story and enjoy full epic-ness that the ME/Shepard series has to offer. Then, I’ll go back and dive deep into the Role Playing mode for my 2nd, 3rd, …run thru’ s.

One other reason why I might go this route is because once I play through, I have a feeling I won’t be interested in the Action/Story modes of the game. Typically, when playing my 2nd -3rd plays on a game I’m less interested in the story and more on gameplay and achievements anyway.

My one grip with Action mode: Soldier only. At least on the demo. I don’t mind the auto level, but it would be awesome if you still had a choice on character. Like my vanguard Shep. Perhaps when you import your ME2 character this won’t be a problem, but I didn’t see any evidence of that on the demo.

What are your thoughts? Will you start with Action, RP, or Story mode?

Roleplaying. The reason is simple, if I wanted to play a TPS I'd play Gears 3, so Action mode is off, and Story mode isn't an option as the story seems to have some writing issues, so the game will redeem itself in giving me better RPG gameplay than ME2 did.

RPG - the classic ME experience. I will end as I began

Can someone confirm what story mode actually is ?

Roleplaying mode. I fell in love with Mass Effect for what it is, not what it isn't - I don't see any reason why I'd personally want to play a version of the game with any of the content cut out. Surely I can just play another game if that's what I want.

Role playing.

Though if the rest of the musical score is as amazing as the pieces in the demo I may just sit and listen for a bit then Role playing.

Roleplaying, and I'll be stunned if the majority doesn't choose roleplaying.

Nice. You know ME1 was my first RPG experience that I actualy enjoyed and finished. I have been playing games since the 90's, but only FPS/strat stuff and was never interested in RPG's until ME. It's like, as you age you appriciate what the RPG genre has to offer.

But being from the FPS side of things I guess that's why I don't mind starting with action.

Roleplaying for sure... but maybe after beating the game and going through it a bunch, I will try the others just to see how they are.... not sure but Roleplaying will be my main play. It is good how they added the options though, I know people who will be picking each of the different modes, so really it seems something for everyone.

99.92% of people that post on this forum are going to do rpg first, and then rpg second. And then action when they have exhausted all decision options

I won't be surprised if action mode is played a lot for the simple fact it's the first in the list... same reason I think soldier was played so heavily in ME1 & ME2... it's the very first / default selection.

With action mode being the default, I suspect a lot of people will end up playing it without really paying attention or realizing the difference.

... oh and obviously roleplaying mode myself... can't fathom why anyone would play action mode.... story mode I can see happening for the easier combat since some folks just want to enjoy the story.

Roleplaying and if that feels less than satisfying, I might have to go back and see if the story I desire is in storytelling. But if the "classic" experience is supposed to be in Roleplaying, that's what I'm really after. I just hope the demo was really, really stripped down because that wasn't the "classic" experience IMO.

story mode is Casual or Movie Mode. Basically its Action mode with easy enough combat you have to actually try to be killed, only you get dialogue choices so its almost like watching an interactive movie without pesky things like difficult battles and RPG Systems to get in the way.

RPG mode for me, Im not buying ME3 for Call of Duty in space, im buying it for epic scifi roleplay.

Yep, you are probably right. Of course to each their own. I just gotta believe I'm not alone out there.

i distinctly remember that you can fine tune the game after you choose anyway so RPG and Story is kind of the same? if RPG is too hard you can bump down the difficulty which would then make it story mode

I think the first playthrough will be with RPG since that's the way I've been playing this franchise for the last 5 years. Then I think I'll foray into Story then action. All in all, I'm looking for unique experiences and playing styles in each one.

RPG more of course. I may go with Story more on my nth playthrough when I'm thorougly fed up with combat and just want to get the perfect set of decisions for this Shepard. I won't touch Action mode with a ten foot pole if it's as restrictive as it appears.

Also, there is no canon. I was afraid of exactly that - that the decisions the game makes for you in action mode will end up being perceived as canonical, somehow better than the alternatives. Good that ME3 is the last game of the trilogy, or I would be afraid that they also get more weight in the sequel.
