Here's something few have considered.  How do we know the child is real?  Bioware has stated several times that Shepard will be dealing with a little PTSD this time around, and the child could be a manifestation of that.  Think about it...

1) No one except Shepard acknowledges the child.  Anderson didn't see or hear him, the Alliance soldiers next to the evacuation shuttle didn't even glance at him, and no one else standing in the Normandy's loading hatch looks
at him either.

2) When Shepard looks away from the vent briefly and looks back, the child is gone.  Could be he just crawled away, could be he disappeared.

3) "You can't help me" = psychological projection of "You can't save everyone."

The only thing that would refute this is the child being present at the very beginning playing with the toy ship, but even then...Shepard's the only one that saw him.  I await your various replies, flames, and "Conspiricy Keanu" photos.

.......I......brilliant! This would make up for BioWare's crappy lines they gave the kid. I support this.

That would make the scene so much better. Although I think my Shepard would imagine him differently. *sheploo smile*

Also notice how nobody helps the child get onto the shuttle, when he's clearly struggling to get on.

I've considered that too, since there are thousands of reapers on Earth its possible to hallucinate for Shepard but we don't have a way of knowing, like Shepard.

What's more pressing is how a kid in a sky scraper vent gets to the ground by entering a vent.

It's something plenty of people have considered. Two specific variants of the theory are that he is a symptom of indoctrination via the Cerberus implants and that he's a Prothean implant from the beacon that will lead Shepard to a superweapon.

I saw this theory floating around here before.
I think it's a great idea, but on the other hand, I would be disappointed that there wasn't an actual child dying in that scene. Adds to the whole "children are invincible" trend in games that really bothers me. See Skyrim. I want to see innocents dying, and that includes children. This is a goddamn galactic war.

The kid was outside, when the attack started it's logical to assume he ran into the building.

I love that bioware setup a situation in game were you can either be a **** or show human compassion, and people on this forum can't understand why, so they try to pick it apart and add reasons why it should be there, god this form makes me laugh

Yes, it is possible but doesn't Occam say that the simpler explanation (there was a child) is preferable to an convoluted one (Shepard is hallucinating?)

Yes. You'll find I was talking about how he left, by entering a vent.

So PTSD = hallucinations?

This is an old theory, but a good one. I'm not sure I'd like it if the kid were a hallucination... I like that he's a symbol to Shepard of all the un-saveable dead.

Second this.

It gets a lot more sense if Shep is from Colonies or Sole Survivor.

Yeah, I guess you get two different payoffs depending which is true.  Granted everything I said is completely speculatory and the child could in fact actually be dead.

Child dies = immediate payoff, player realizes what's at stake, brutal war is brutal.
Child "dies" find out later he wasn't real = long term payoff, player realizes the child didn't in fact die, but also realize Shepard is going insane.

Shepard spent 2 days near an indoctrinating device while knocked out on Project Base.
Just saying.

Perhaps saying "No one" was a little presumptuous of me, but I personally haven't seen it on here before.  Let alone a topic about it.  Also Reaper indoctrination makes more sense than PTSD, though one could in fact amplify the other.

Guessing it's all Sheppards reaper cyborg enhancements they crammed him full of in ME2, that's finally taking it's toll on his mind.

We know the child is real because he reacts to the Reaper presence and his clothes flap when the reaper slams down.
