Here's something few have considered.  How do we know the child is real?  Bioware has stated several times that Shepard will be dealing with a little PTSD this time around, and the child could be a manifestation of that.  Think about it...

1) No one except Shepard acknowledges the child.  Anderson didn't see or hear him, the Alliance soldiers next to the evacuation shuttle didn't even glance at him, and no one else standing in the Normandy's loading hatch looks
at him either.

2) When Shepard looks away from the vent briefly and looks back, the child is gone.  Could be he just crawled away, could be he disappeared.

3) "You can't help me" = psychological projection of "You can't save everyone."

The only thing that would refute this is the child being present at the very beginning playing with the toy ship, but even then...Shepard's the only one that saw him.  I await your various replies, flames, and "Conspiricy Keanu" photos.

: end sequence

To dispute #1 When Shepard opened the door Anderson went through,Shepard talked to the kid, At some point Anderson came back to  get Shepard(Was still by the door,From that angle he wouldnt be able to see the kid.)When Shepard turned around the kid was gone.Either the kid went back through the vents or Shepard was seeing things.

You'd think Anderson would ask what he saw or why he was over there and you'd think Shepard would tell him to watch for a child

This would be a horrible thing for them to implement, especially since the intent was for you to feel something. Unless it plays out into a big part of the story where you're indoctrinated or become incapacitated to a degree that it influences the story, its useless.

There have been a few threads posted on this with people on both sides of the fence.

I personally think it's shep seeing things mainly cause nobody else seems to acknowledge the kid running around alone. Also the way he disappears in the vents without making a sound. He's either fake or the hanar are training human assassin now

On a tangent but still related to the PTSD
mentioned by Excalceo - right after the hearing gets cut short Shepard
gets slammed into the wall and is knocked out.

The vague whispers you get to hear then don't quite seem right.
Not to mention that the individual yelling "Shepard!" sounds like it's someone other then Admiral Anderson.

the screems and whispers do sound erie but that could just be Shepard trying to get his hearing back after an explosive shock wave.  same goes for why Anderson sounds slightly off.

An the "Shepard!" is probably anderson it's just that whole "ringing in the ears and voices distorted' thing you hear in games and movies.

You're also forgetting that at that landing pad everyone except one man is in the shuttle and the one man is being helped by another.

Then again. It wouldn't make sense for them to not just take off once everyone was in (Assuming the kid isn't real.) but they still didn't help him which is strange.

Perhaps they too realized how forcibly emotional the kid was and didn't want to help him. :D

You may just have spoiled the best twist in the game for us...

Seriously, it doesn't seem too far fetched, and this could make for a really interesting story strand.

That said, I do have my doubts.

Idk how a theory is a spoiler.

Oh, I'm not really blaming anyone, and I was exagerating a little bit.

But you will agree with me that a theory, if proven true, can spoil the surprise of certain twists.

I kind of assumed that from the beginning. The "You can't help me" thing is obviously symbolic, and the kid kind of just disappears in the vent or whatever he's hiding in. Besides, what would a little kid be doing playing with toys right outside some big government building anyway?

That would not fit bioware's MO

Highly doubtful they would take it there

You can see in the shuttle that there are many civilians in the area. There are a lot of "military  towns" in America, like Westpoint where the majority are military but there are civilians around too. Also even if its a military base, soldiers can live on base with their civilian families. Seeing how it starts with everyone being busy running about, its' logical that he's the child of someone who works for the government and he's just outside playing.

I dunno, I'll be pretty surprised if it turns out to be true.  If only because I called it ahead of time, everyone deserves a Stephen Colbert-esque "I CALLED IT!" moment at some point in their lives :D

Seems more likely that its just a child.

-If you watch carefully during the demo, you see the boy enter the building in which the vent is, being pursued by husks. If the child wasn't real, the husks would turn towards Anderson and Shepard.
-The soldiers wait until the child is in before telling the shuttle to go.

I think its just people reading too much into things - like when people thought that Bioware's next game was going to be a sequel to Alpha Protocol, based on an image from ME3's teaser trailer that showed a soldier holding an incisor rifle.

I think people are disenchanted with the content and want to add substance to the story where they can.

I like it either way. The call with guts in it would have the kid be real because you don't see kids die that often and that can be powerful.

PTSD, indoctrination, remanat of the Prothean beacon, etc. can all be used well.

BTW: The theory isn't new but if you came up with it by yourself then "good call" because everything fits perfectly with your theory.

Note: Just because Shep sees a kid playing doesn't mean that he didn't imagine the same kid later. [Nor does it mean that the kid he sees playing isn't imagined]

Yeah, either way has a good pay-off.

Makes total sense. Most good writers in TV and film try to delve into the psyche of the characters they write about. A Shepard who suffers from PTSD would certainly make him more authentic.

I heard someone say this several months ago. I thought it was stupid then, and nothing has changed.

Though, someone said it was a little girl when you play femshep. So it might still be true.

It's still a boy if you play FemShep, though that doesn't rule out the possibility completely.
