We caught hold of Bioware CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka on the Gamscom show
floor and got a chance to ask him about the polarising effect of Dragon
Age 2, and Bioware’s plans for Dragon Age 3. “The team is going to have
some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans
and new fans with a marriage of the best from both games, Dragon Age:
Origins and Dragon Age 2,” he says

Dragon Age 2 received a wide variety of different scores when it was
released earlier this year. Some hated it, others loved it. We asked Dr.
Ray why he thought Dragon Age 2 received such a varied response from
fans and critics alike.

“It’s interesting because the first reviews – the number of the
reviews was also very polarised, awesomely so. Lots of 90+ reviews, we
also got fans that I think in some cases who were expecting more Dragon
Age: Origins, and there was a misalignment of expectation there,” says
Dr Ray.

“One of the core values of Bioware is that we take feedback really
seriously, and we know that the core fans who were expecting more Dragon
Age Origins – we have to respond to that – we’re not willing to ignore
that, we’re going to take that head on.”

That doesn’t mean Bioware are about to backtrack and revert to the more methodical pace of Dragon Age: Origins, however.

“We also have an obligation to our new fans,” adds Dr. Ray, “the ones
who were surprised and delighted with some new approaches and
accessibility in terms of action and combat”

“What we need to do as developers is take that feedback from both
sets of fans to heart and see about marrying that in future games in the
Dragon Age franchise. I think that the team has actually got a great
plan. I think the team is going to have some things that are going to

surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage
of these… the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age
2. And we look forward more to talking about that in the future.”

They have not announced anything definite.

If my interest in Dragon Age weren't already on life support, a few more "promo" interviews like this ought to put it in the ground.

I almost laughed when he said Bioware takes feedback seriously. How many threads have there been requesting controller support for Bioware's PC games, and yet we still don't have it?

Things like that are especially mind boggling because practically every other multiplatform game always has controller support.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I'm betting DA3 will be 90% DA2 with a few features thrown back in so that marketing can say it's more appealing to fans of DA:O.

Don't say that, you're going make me cry :(

What I gathered from reading this, the "new fans" like the combat features and the "wheel" while the old fans..actually, I have to stop right there. I can't tell the difference from the old and new fans. I so miss not having to hear NPC speak, and the in depth companion missions.

Remember Morrgian, her side story was simply amazing. I wanted to see more of her in DA2, hence the title Dragon Age 2. I feel as if they are going to suck me in and then it's going be a bit of a let down when we get a new game with no reference to orgins what so ever.

I is z a sad panda.

Do you mean the PC? NPCs were always voice acted in DA:O.

and the in depth companion missions.

Eh, they weren't any deeper in DA:O than they were in DA2. I think they will were well done in DA2. Not that I actually enjoyed DA2. I hated it. But, the companions plots were well written. Definitely better written than the main plot.

Here's my take on it, I enjoyed that I could stop in the middle of doing something and speak to any of my companions. I do not like having to complete a mission in order for them to have something new to say. An example would be Morrgian, you could go back to "camp" and talk to her or in middle of walking.

Mass Effect feel, that they don't have anything new to say untill a mission is complete. I meant I perfer the way it was in Orgins without the wheel. It's nice hearing the PC speak. I just imagined his voice in my head, the way it comes out isn't what I imagine it would be.

Companion mission's were much richer in Orgins, an example would be that temple you went to and found that mage and later you discovered she had a spirt keeping her alive inside her body. Or that that lady was trying to take Morrgian's body. It was much more compelling. Everyone had a different and unique style. Morrgian wore loose fitting clothes and didn't believe in love, while other companion was much more shy.

To compare the two games. I would pick DA-Orgins. I expected more of that in the sequal. Much like you would expect see Luke Skywalker in the second Star Wars. However, it wasn't meant to be..

....O_o.

The end result of attempting this will be...well, I'll be watching it all from a distance, methinks.

We've seen news blips of the same information before, so nothing too thrilling(yet) to be heard.

I hope the marketing for DA3 involves an "Awesome Button", just so I can watch the forums explode in anger when people realize Bioware isn't going to return to a DA:O style of game.

It's going to be very hard for BioWare to top PCgamer's RPG of the decade.

Taking feedback seriously doesn't mean we necessarily have to agree with you or that we are obligated to include that feedback in a future project. It means we don't just dismiss it out of hand, and we will consider whether what's being suggested fits with our project goals and, if it does, how it can be incorporated into feature lists or development objectives. There is no magic "MAKE IT SO" button in game development, nor is it trivial to take a one-line idea from a fan and just throw it in to the mix.

What fan ideas have been implemented in past Bioware games?

You can tell me, I'm a bear. :innocent:

After what I've seen from ME3's script, it seems that BW has taken the step to be a generic dev team and focus on gameplay and ignore lore and story. Looks like Bethtesda is RPG king yet again.

They said RPG of the decade "so far."  I think Sexy Beach XIII came out the day after that, they probably wrote another article revising their statement.

I'm sorry Bioware, but there is wonder cleansing power in a simple "we screwed up and released a half-cooked game."  Every time you blame the fanbase for not getting your brilliant, innovative sequel, you make it all worse.

If they actually listened to fans, then DA2 would have never been released. By now they've probably already chased off the majority of DA fans with that atrocity.

It was a creative risk, giving the player access to an AC-130 gunship in DA2, but I felt it lent the Qunari siege a certain gravitas that it might have otherwise lacked. Although I think we're all willing to admit that, in retrospect, arming the mages with MP5s and flashbangs might have been a little much - and if we had to do it again, I doubt we'd take away the party and turn the whole thing into a first person shooter.

KOA is NOT DA2. For one thing, iff DA2 has similar aims, it does far worse, x 10. Plus it just waters down the aspects that have made Bioware role-playing feel in-depth in the past, leaving behind a bastard son, that feels incomplete and missing out on important things that made previous efforts worthwhile.

Whatever.  Supporting controllers is practically a standard these days, since so many games are multiplatform, and controller support has been requested since the original Mass Effect, so there's no excuse for that......much the same as the pathetic playdough like textures that constantly pop up in Bioware's games.

But you and yours assume you know whats best for everyone, even those that have their computers hooked up to an HDTV instead of a monitor, and people that have carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis in their hand.

For people like them, playing with a controller instead of a mouse would make a big difference..  But since you guys think you know everything, including the best way to play your games on a computer, it's moot.
