We caught hold of Bioware CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka on the Gamscom show
floor and got a chance to ask him about the polarising effect of Dragon
Age 2, and Bioware’s plans for Dragon Age 3. “The team is going to have
some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans
and new fans with a marriage of the best from both games, Dragon Age:
Origins and Dragon Age 2,” he says

Dragon Age 2 received a wide variety of different scores when it was
released earlier this year. Some hated it, others loved it. We asked Dr.
Ray why he thought Dragon Age 2 received such a varied response from
fans and critics alike.

“It’s interesting because the first reviews – the number of the
reviews was also very polarised, awesomely so. Lots of 90+ reviews, we
also got fans that I think in some cases who were expecting more Dragon
Age: Origins, and there was a misalignment of expectation there,” says
Dr Ray.

“One of the core values of Bioware is that we take feedback really
seriously, and we know that the core fans who were expecting more Dragon
Age Origins – we have to respond to that – we’re not willing to ignore
that, we’re going to take that head on.”

That doesn’t mean Bioware are about to backtrack and revert to the more methodical pace of Dragon Age: Origins, however.

“We also have an obligation to our new fans,” adds Dr. Ray, “the ones
who were surprised and delighted with some new approaches and
accessibility in terms of action and combat”

“What we need to do as developers is take that feedback from both
sets of fans to heart and see about marrying that in future games in the
Dragon Age franchise. I think that the team has actually got a great
plan. I think the team is going to have some things that are going to

surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage
of these… the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age
2. And we look forward more to talking about that in the future.”

I almost laughed when he said Bioware takes feedback seriously. How many threads have there been requesting controller support for Bioware's PC games, and yet we still don't have it?

Things like that are especially mind boggling because practically every other multiplatform game always has controller support.

Taking feedback seriously doesn't mean we necessarily have to agree with you or that we are obligated to include that feedback in a future project. It means we don't just dismiss it out of hand, and we will consider whether what's being suggested fits with our project goals and, if it does, how it can be incorporated into feature lists or development objectives. There is no magic "MAKE IT SO" button in game development, nor is it trivial to take a one-line idea from a fan and just throw it in to the mix.

It's going to be another Call of Duty style game.

It was a creative risk, giving the player access to an AC-130 gunship in DA2, but I felt it lent the Qunari siege a certain gravitas that it might have otherwise lacked. Although I think we're all willing to admit that, in retrospect, arming the mages with MP5s and flashbangs might have been a little much - and if we had to do it again, I doubt we'd take away the party and turn the whole thing into a first person shooter.

Whatever.  Supporting controllers is practically a standard these days, since so many games are multiplatform, and controller support has been requested since the original Mass Effect, so there's no excuse for that......much the same as the pathetic playdough like textures that constantly pop up in Bioware's games.

But you and yours assume you know whats best for everyone, even those that have their computers hooked up to an HDTV instead of a monitor, and people that have carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis in their hand.

For people like them, playing with a controller instead of a mouse would make a big difference..  But since you guys think you know everything, including the best way to play your games on a computer, it's moot.

Well, I actually -do- know everything. It's a lot less fun than you'd think.

For example, I know all about the unternet. You thought the internet was bad? Buddy, you ain't seen nothing yet.

But the internet is powered on memes, that and hamsters.

We'll just double the hamsters, then. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!

I think that's enough meandering around a topic for one thread. If you wish to discuss Dragon Age, please use the Dragon Age or Dragon Age II forums. Thank you.

End of line.
