Are there some blocking or counter attacking in the game?
I am asking as it would be fun to turn the tables on enemies who tried to smash or impale you.
About melee combat..

From what I saw in the demo, you could double tap melee to stagger someone long enough to power smash them, but other then that not that I saw.
