It gets addressed in the game afaik. If Ashley/Kaidan know Shepard cheated, they know it already from the beginning. Oooohh ... I'm sure there's a source on board of the Normandy.
Joker. That guy knows everything.
And the VS had at least several months to talk to Joker - and find out. It's not that Jeff can keep a secret.

He doesn't have to rat on Shepard to run off out the mouth about who Shep was sleeping with.

Liara knows.
Shadowbroker!!!!!
I don't know how anything with Ashley or Kaiden could be called cheating. If Horizon wasn't a break up, I don't know what is.

'xactly. Joker is a fine guy, but he's also not known for keeping secrets. So maybe he simply talked to the VS about random stuff - and mentions the new LI at some time.
Like this?
Joker: ... and then there is that luscious woman. Miranda. You know, that Cerberus operative with ... uhh, yeah. Since she's no longer here I can tell you everything.
Ashley: For example, Joker?
Joker: Oh, not much. She was Shepard's CO. At least most times. Think their relationship was professional for most time ...
Ashley: "Most time"?
Joker: You know. After the stunt you did on Horizon - the Commander needed someone to talk. Kelly helped him a bit, but I also saw him talking a lot with Miranda. Much more than before. No idea when they got friendly ... oops. Nevermind.
Ashley: Wait. Shepard got "friendly" with that Cerberus Officer?
Joker: Sh*t, Jeff, why can't you ever keep your stupid mouth shut?! Sh*t! Sh*tsh*tsh*t!
Ashley: I'll consider this as a "yes", Joker. Thank you ...

So when that scene happens at the beginning of the game, they already know that Shep got together with someone else while he/she was gone?
That makes things interesting. So I wonder if Ash/Kaidan will confront Shep about it....knowing how honest and direct Ashley is, I could see her doing that. Similar to the Liara situation in ME1.

I know it's in the script when Ash addresses that ME2!LI when talking to Shepard.
However, I couldn't find any script that showed how the VS finds out.
So either I overlooked that portion - or it's not in the script. The VS just knows it. And Joker is the most reliable source, not even Chakwas knows everything. Given the fact Joker - the non-people-person - knows everything that's happening on the Normandy, he also should have an idea if Shepard goes down to business with a new LI.

I'm guessing you are talking about ME2 romances which I would say again to look at the script. Seems like Shep and VS/Liara talk about it during the "are we still together" thing.

The Demo scenes between Shepard and the VS seemed neutral to me. It can be interpenetrated and RP-ed however the player wishes.

Yes. Besides that dialogue (you can postpone that decision afaik) there are no hints how the VS finds out about that second LI. Liara is easy - she's the Shadow Broker. And she has access to the cameras on board of the Normandy ...

Yep ... I love Joker but I could so see this happening. But there are many ways and reasons that the VS could know. We will see in-game soon if and how.

Oh, one thing is for sure: Shepard is far more professional that Ash. Neither she nor he is really smiling. Maybe THAT's something that could change: smile for "romance", no smile for "cheated" / "no romance".
True.
But I still can't hear a "eff you", from neither Shepard, and no situation in the intro mission.
Also keep in mind - but that's something we won't see before we can't import a playthrough with romanced Ash / Kaidan: Shepard could still feel frustrated / sad 'cause of Horizon. So s/he'll keep it all professional. After all, it's up to the player to decide if Shepard returns to the VS or show him/her the cold shoulder.
Actually, the entire story revolving around the VS allows the player to play down the full set of emotions: from "still in love / want back" over "still in love / don't give a second chance" to "sheer hate". With proper results.
For a "cheated" intro I would prefer a slight hurt smile. My Shepard still loves Ash despite his stumble and I'm hoping that she still loves him so ... yeah, slight smiles that hint at the pain would be nice.
How would she know Shep "cheated"? I don't think they have had a chance to talk since he got back to Earth.........that we know of. Granted, she doesn't know what Shepard did while he was gone working for Cerberus , but I don't think she would automatically assume he hooked up with someone else...
I imagine it will come back to bite him/her in the arse when the ME1 LI crosses the ME2 LI.
Like if you porked Ashley in ME1, then porked Miranda in ME2, and took Ash along with you on whatever missions have Miranda involved.
Or if you romanced Ash and Tali or Kaidan and Garrus, you'd probably get an intercom message with Joker asking Shep to break them up. And it just gets ugly and s/he's forced to choose or they both dump him/her.

If you happened to have romanced the VS then you get an emailed semi-apology reminding you that you have changed (treason does that to a person) and that the VS is no longer the bright eyed, ignorant, worshiper that they once were and can now see you for the lying scum that you are. Just how they are able to make this determination based on less than three and one half minutes after the more than two years of not seeing you and presuming that you had died is a mystery, but they managed it never the less.
So why be surprised when their greeting is less than that of friends in ME3? Anderson is your friend and he certainly didn't greet you that way. In fact, he even kidded with you and stood up for you when it counted both before and after you killed 300K people. The VS never did that and apparently never would. But the VS apologists will have a vastly different view, I am certain.

We've all know what it's like seeing someone after a huge falling-through like that. I felt like I was reliving a bad memory. Call me immersed. Good job Bioware.

The bond that they "share" is one of mutual distrust. Horizon changed the dynamic between them and Shepard. To the VS, Shepard is a traitor and a terrorist (why the VS didn't attempt to arrest Shepard on Horizon is also beyond me). To Shepard (mine at least) if you didn't know me on Horizon, you never did so why should I waste any more time on you? Others are a bit more masochistic, but to each their own.

Indeed, whatever the reason for Horizon, things are bound to be awkward.

I was going to make a new thread, but saw this.
I personally want my Shepard's to stay stony until Horizen is... discussed. If it is just glossed over as if its 'the past' i'll be unhappy. It is, in my eyes, a story point that needs to be resolved face to face.

Actually, i've gone through that portion of the demo, and I am semi-certain i've had two smiles from Shepard, but also one where there was just a stony look. Could have been an animation glitch, but i'd appreciate if people could pipe in? It might not be down to interpretation, but actual differences. I also share the view that even with a smile, it was ratehr hesitant, and the follow up remark by the VS showcases that. I just hope they run with it.

The only smile I've seen on my playthroughs have been from the VS, never Shep.
I actually liked the smile from the VS, and I liked Shep's response to it. Things should be awkward. Horizon was difficult for both parties, romanced or not. I thought the scene was perfect in demonstrating it.
