Um, maybe a dumb question, but how large is the gap between the escape from omega 4 and the reaper attack on earth? Like, how long is it that Shep and VS have been away from each otehr since Horizon?

I remember the devs saying that by the time ME3 starts, it has been about 6 months after the events of ME2.

^This.  I think that also has given each person time to cool off and reevaluate how they feel. I think Kaidan and Ashley have grown since then (granted, it hasn't been a super long time, but still...). I have a feeling that we will see them evolve quite a bit during ME3.

For those of you who haven't heard it, Kimberly Brooks and Raphael Sbarge (Ash/Kaidan VAs) talk about this on his audio blog and Kimberly gives her brief thoughts on Ashley's growth through the three games. You can listen to it here.

Here's what she said:

Raphael: So one of the things, one of the questions that they asked, was: As far as your character, what was your sense of how – David wanted to know – your general thoughts on the character of Ashley, and how she’s changed over the three games.

Kimberly: Well, I think, you know, she’s definitely changed quite a bit, and evolved – which is always a great thing for a character. But I think the one constant about Ashley is her dedication to the cause. She’s only ever had a military life, and that’s sort of all she knows. So, I think she’s been pretty constant with her beliefs. I think what’s changed is her belief, basically, in Shepard. I mean, she doubted Shepard so much in game one and game two.

Raphael: Yeah.

Kimberly: And her evolving in game three is just huge. I think it’s a really pivotal part of the game – without giving
too much away. And I think it also depends on how you played Ashley. She could have evolved more or less, depending on how you played her, I think.

I saw one. It's visible when Shepard passes Ash for something of half of a second or even less. Mouth corners -do- move very slightly upwards - easy to miss. Besides that: no reaction, neither here nor later.

Shepard locked his/her emotions out, if there are any.

I think that's just your mind playing tricks on you. I've done both default and custom male and female shepards and neither smile. Only VS smiles.

I keep remembering that if you romanced VS and stayed true, there is a big picture of them in Shep's cabin. What happened to it?

Also, I don't recall seeing any smiles out of any of Sheps in the demo. I saw pain and I saw lots of anger. but I don't recall any smiles. I know how the talk mechanic works, but I'd really like for VS to come to me this time. I have some Sheps who really want to give VS a piece of their mind, and it just doesn't seem right for her to go crawling to him.

No not really girls can hold grudges FOREVER so no BW better not railroad us into its all cool with VS. Specter girl died calling shep a traitor so thats fixed VS however still has to answer.

Very interesting thread as for me the way I interpreted that scene is that they left Shepard's response neutral enough that the player will be able to determine Shepard's overall attitude toward the VS and my Shepard is still pissed about Horizon. Of all the old ME 1 squadmates I ran into during the course of ME 2 they were the only one to not only question my allegiance but accuse me of betrayal. That is not something I forget or forgive easily.

My Shepard's can forgive a lot of things but betrayal isn't one of them. Ash betrayed my Shepard when she said those things. She betrayed my trust in her by slandering me and, worse, agreeing with the Council. About me. The man that saved her life and restored her family name.

So I didn't even notice that he ignored her because that is exactly what he would have done.

I can't wait to find out what Ash thinks of my new LI Tali. In fact, I briefly considered making Jack my LI for that playthrough just to spite her.

How and when did she doubt him in ME1??????

In the beginning and if you pull the wrong lines.
She questions Shepard a lot, remember? Even if romanced. Several people still feel upset Ashley never admired Shepard like other characters.

Overall it's not that visible, but it's there. ME2 is obvious and from what I read so far, it'll be an issue in ME3 for some time.

I'll give something away: you can play with Ash in a way her initial image of Shepard (the one that got most of its fuel from ME2 / Horizon) becomes more and more true with all consequences.
You also can play with Ash so that image fades away and finally is no longer an issue. It highly depends on the player. BW did a great job here because the player's decisions -do- make a great difference here, even if it's just a side plot.

Hey, I know. That's why I love her. She keeps Shepard grounded. He doesn't need a yes-woman around him - he needs an equal

Like others have said, the scene works for me either way, it's neither the time nor the place to discuss Horizon, so it is professional with maybe some admiration/affection.

As for Horizon, I looked at it this way, if my Shepards had watched Kaidan die, then grieved for two years to finally start moving on when suddenly out of the blue he walks back into my life working for enemies of the Alliance and the Council, I would be a lot skeptical as well. Remember this is the first time ever outside of the Bible/Mythology someone has come back from the dead. So I can definitely see them not believing Shepard on this fact.

As for the apology mail, I always read it pretty much how Sbarge read it when he did the audio for it over Thanksgiving. So there was never a reason for my Shepards to forgive Kaidan, he had never done anything wrong in her eyes. Did what he say hurt my Shepards? Yes, oh yes very much, however, after the initial pain, she understood and knew she would not have reacted any different had the situation been reversed.
