More like what your friends are doing wrong. They haven't linked to Origin or played the demo... well one of them have.

Dev's replied about this in another thread. Known bug. Try to fire up MP even if you do not yet have the badge - I believe the Dev said it SHOULD work.

One has played the demo (which isn't even necessary to unlock muliplayer) and three of them have linked to origin (even though only 1 is required) but it still isn't unlocking.  I really don't understand why...

I have been trying this but it just keeps saying that I don't have access.

Don't know what to say about this really but maybe it will work now since they released a patch?

You should definately try again now after downloading it.
