It could be explained by the Reaper IFF installed onboard the Normandy.

That IFF didn't even fool the Collectors. And should be recognized as stolen after ME2.Uplifted wrote...

why doesn't Gandalf ask the great eagles to drop the ring inside mount doom right away?
Because:
a) Sauron would spot them (and stop them)
c) Manwe forbid the eagels to interfere directly.

For some reason your post made me really happy...

Yeah, I would have preferred the Reaper at least acknowledging the Normandy's existence and maybe taking a couple of near-miss pot shots at her. The Reaper completely ignoring the Normandy made me scratch my head a bit, but it's hardly a deal breaker in my eyes.Random citizen wrote...
Well they could have had joker doing some evasive manoeuvres and the Normandy sustaining heavy shield damage and light armour damage by being grazed by a beam two times. Thank the godess for the Silaris armor and multicore shielding. It would not have been that hard to do

Yep, better to not ask at all. I think I'm actually going to take Mr. Priestly's advice and play through once without importing.

Killing innocents hurts Shepard more. Letting him leave Earth, unable to do anything while the Reapers slaughter his people...
Also, the Normandy's plot armour was upgraded. But mostly the whole "This hurts you".
this seems to be the best explanation IMO. i can totally see the reaper A.I. (i.e. the entity or whatever behind the hologram of the reaper ship that shephard occasionally sees)..
its the whole, 'we got you and your people, and there is NOTHING you can do about it' type of thing.
and realistically they would be right. i dont really see a scenario where earth survives. sure, they may be able to recruit the fleets and somehow unite the galaxy and save it OVERALL.. but i dont really see how humanity could survive. even if every major species in the galaxy was united with earth.. its not like he could magically summon their fleets.. and the fact that earth is NOT united with the majority of the species does not bode well for earth.
it will be interesting to see if bioware even explains how this is handled.

There are simpler ways they could have done it, for instance let Shepard witness the destruction of the shuttles before the Normandy arrives, this would have also been a good point for Anderson to say he was going back.Nu-Nu wrote...
Maybe they still want Shepard alive or at least not completely turn into ashes and recgonised her/his ship? We still don't know why Harbringer wanted her/his body, though I have my theories.

uhh there was a reaper (the landcrawler thing that took out the transport shuttles) like pretty much eye to eye with shephard and the normandy. they didnt need radar.. unless of course the reapers are blind.

Imagine the scene:
Shepard - on board the Normandy - Joker get us out of here!
<reaper lasers>
<Normandy blows up>
<Game ends>
