This is a crazy idea, but DONT import your saves the first time through (minor spoiler)

Ah, that's a good one.
I did one save for a similar purpose - where everyone is dead. No, really, every single one who could be killed during the game, being a nameless merc or a prominent squadmate, they are all dead. Even Mordin. That was a hard choice to make though.
I'm interested to see how that will turn out.

Damn, you are crazy...I will import first and play default second, this way I'll know why I bought the first 2 freaking games.

An interesting idea Mr. Priestly, but I think I value my Shepard too much to sacrifice my first playthrough, sorry!

Now I see how all the choices I made in my ME1 and ME2 playthroughs effect ME3. That guy who was just some guy in my first default game, is now a character I remember encountering in ME1.

I certainly hope this is the case.

Ok, one little spoiler as an illustration, but it is minor. Remember that couple in ME1 on the Citadel debating whether to have a child or not? If you import, they are in the game! If you don't, their role isn't there. These are the little details you pick up only when you know they weren't there the first time.

Well... like... that's what ME2 did. I don't remember if the couple was in the game regardless, but with other choices if you imported you got a cameo and if you didn't import (or you imported the Renegade decision...) you got nothing.

That is a good idea actually. Experience the game and then realize how much fuller of a game it is if you play through as an existing shepard :)

I dunno. Was ME2 so much better because it was Shiala and not Generic Feros Colonist giving you the same quest? I guess so, but please don't try and play it off as some kind of amazing thing. You're talking about tailoring. My ME2 games that had the Fist cameo didn't really feel any more or less special than the ones without it. If you're implying that things will actually play out differently because of this I might be interested. If the couple trying to decide about the kid in ME1 show up and are like "Remember us? Let's have 5 lines of dialogue and then you never see us again and we have no impact on the story", then it's all just set dressing, isn't it?

I guess in that way it's like accessorizing. You can go out as plain-Jane/John Shepard, or you can put on your bling.

Maybe I'll take you up on that Mr. Priestly, maybe I will. I'll set my expectations to Zero and go from there.

And I don't want to hear any "nobody told you to get your expectations up" because unless I was taking crazy pills, this forum had that big "Vote for ME3 as Most Anticipated Game of 2012!" thread, and if that's not about raising expectations, I'll eat my hat.

I see the point but I can't do it.
Certainly, I'd see how my ME-universe differs from the ME-universe BioWare created for the unimported playthrough.

But it would be like sleeping in a hotel instead of sleeping at home. I wouldn't feel comfy ;) .

Why do all these "minor spoiler" threads keep popping up in the "no spoilers allowed" forums?

Yes yes, I hear you ranting at me "Priestly! You hadsome fool, of COURSE we are going to import our saved games into ME3. Why, I have 17 saves and I'm bringing each one. ME3 is all about finishing MY Mass Effect story, etc etc" and yeah I totally get that, but hear me out.

The first time I played through ME3 in its completed state I played the default game, so I didn't import a save. This lets the game make assumptions for you on the story of the game and what has happened previously. I played it, I enjoyed when certain charcters returned and I noted certain choices were made for me. I finished the game and really enjoyed it. Then I imported a save and replayed it.

Now I see how all the choices I made in my ME1 and ME2 playthroughs effect ME3. That guy who was just some guy in my first default game, is now a character I remember encountering in ME1. In that plot where the krogan was just a random krogan in charge of a troop, now it is Grunt! And the ending I saw previously with the default guy changes in interesting ways because it is Grunt and he and Shepard have history and stuff (I won't go into spoiler details, but it is wicked cool) and there is SO MUCH more like that through the game. Some major some minor.

Ok, one little spoiler as an illustration, but it is minor. Remember that couple in ME1 on the Citadel debating whether to have a child or not? If you import, they are in the game! If you don't, their role isn't there. These are the little details you pick up only when you know they weren't there the first time.

If I had imported my save first, it would still have been aswesome, but it would have been almost what I expected. I expect to see returning characters. I expect my choices to matter. I expectdialogs to change based on the choices I made. By playing the default game first, that just isn't there to the degree I expected as a fan. Importing after the first playthough better illustrated that what I did before actually mattered.

Still, I may just be crazy. For me, this made ME3 even better the second time around.

My first ME2 playthrough was not an import even though I had played and finished ME1.

I enjoyed it, and then every playthrough since then has been an ME1 import.

I'll likely do the same for ME3.

Same. An interesting idea for sure, and thank-you for sharing your thoughts Mr. Priestly, but for my first playthrough I want to see the Shepard that I've gone through the previous 2 games with have her, hopefully happy, ending Image IPB

I will import first (only 2 playthroughs) and then I will do default.
Doesn't default playthrough mean there is a canon?
or will the no import ME3 playthrough be different to the no import ME2 playthrough.

In otherwords, if you don't use the ME2 save game, will Wrex be dead like if you didn't import your ME1 save game into ME2?
