This is a crazy idea, but DONT import your saves the first time through (minor spoiler)

The game is based on the choices you've made to date, so while seeing them without those choices being made might allow for the impact to show on a later playthrough, I want to see them carried through, and I consider that the joy of the series overall.

Yes yes, I hear you ranting at me "Priestly! You hadsome fool, of COURSE we are going to import our saved games into ME3. Why, I have 17 saves and I'm bringing each one. ME3 is all about finishing MY Mass Effect story, etc etc" and yeah I totally get that, but hear me out.
The first time I played through ME3 in its completed state I played the default game, so I didn't import a save. This lets the game make assumptions for you on the story of the game and what has happened previously. I played it, I enjoyed when certain charcters returned and I noted certain choices were made for me. I finished the game and really enjoyed it. Then I imported a save and replayed it.
Now I see how all the choices I made in my ME1 and ME2 playthroughs effect ME3. That guy who was just some guy in my first default game, is now a character I remember encountering in ME1. In that plot where the krogan was just a random krogan in charge of a troop, now it is Grunt! And the ending I saw previously with the default guy changes in interesting ways because it is Grunt and he and Shepard have history and stuff (I won't go into spoiler details, but it is wicked cool) and there is SO MUCH more like that through the game. Some major some minor.
Ok, one little spoiler as an illustration, but it is minor. Remember that couple in ME1 on the Citadel debating whether to have a child or not? If you import, they are in the game! If you don't, their role isn't there. These are the little details you pick up only when you know they weren't there the first time.
If I had imported my save first, it would still have been aswesome, but it would have been almost what I expected. I expect to see returning characters. I expect my choices to matter. I expectdialogs to change based on the choices I made. By playing the default game first, that just isn't there to the degree I expected as a fan. Importing after the first playthough better illustrated that what I did before actually mattered.
Still, I may just be crazy. For me, this made ME3 even better the second time around.
I don't think you're crazy at all, infact you just encouraged me to play with default Shepard for first time around, just what I did in ME 2 aswell

"Play through it again with your own save and all those random characters you didn't recognise or care about are replaced with some you do!"
I think I'll just skip straight to that part. ;-)

Something tells me that the terms "Mentally Healthy" and "BSN Poster" may be mutually exclusive......
Anyways, there are many ways to accomplish this, Chris' suggestion is but one way.
I almost completely changed both ME 1 and ME 2 when I decided that I wanted to get the Paramour achievement in ME 2. After looking over the LIs for ME2, I eventually decided on Tali.
So I created a Male Shepard. Many changes to the games, and when I left Ash on Virmire, the ending parts of ME 1 were radically different. And many things I had taken for granted in ME 2 were also altered or missing.
Think on it. I'm certain it will come to you, eventually....
EDIT: clarity

So... weak character substitutions in otherwise exactly the same situations instead of actual consequences and decent variations confirmed then? <_<

Give my memory some credit. Also, some of us have actually played the first two games, quite recently too, in preparation and anticipation.
I thought playing through these games with the same character was a highlight of the ability to personalize Shepard's story. Why on Earth (Or Sur'Kesh, or Thessia, or Rakhana) would I not want to take advantage of that?
I will decline. I don't like the implications of this advice.

but I must add, that I'm getting more and more concerned, this is unusual request, and I'm afraid something similar like DA2 will happen to ME3, auto dialogue, and lack of investigate option in conversation in the demo got me worried, and now this strange request. I'm afraid that story will be oversimplified because of newcomers in series, but then again ME2 story wasn't particularly good, not as ME1 was, but it still was a great game. Also in ME2 my decisions from first game didn't have much impact, but I nevertheless enjoyed the game, ME3 perhaps will be the same, but I hope it will be better
one thing is certain, if the mess up ME3, they can say goodbye to most of the long term fans

Just like the store keep who told me he was out of redbull because if he ordered less there is less to get stolen!Ya know if you don’t sell anything nothing will be stolen!
My gf told me the same thing yesterday, she said; go help yourself first then you will appreciate doing it with me more.
Went to a restaurant they made me eat old bread first so I would appreciate the hard work of the chef more once I tried his meal.(Now you know why the waits are so long sometimes insecure chefs
You know if you go for 4 minutes without drawing breath you can really feel how great it is to draw breath! Even bad smelling air will be great after that!
Is the game that bad I have to lower expectations so I can find things that are cool about it the second time? Yea thnx GREAT TIP!
