Headlines for 28 March 2012

Presumably a juggler in a previous life, Challseus is having to keep several balls in the air this week! Nevertheless he has managed to complete a full play-through of the Rose of Eternity module and will soon be looking for people to help play test the next build. If you are interested there is an email address in the last Thursday's journal post. He also admits to working on a third enticingly secret project so let the rampant speculation begin ...

As day turns to night in this week's blog post, Mooglator soothes us to sleep with no less than six samples of music from the realms. These are just some of the tunes that may be accompanying you as you journey through the expansive (and still expanding) City of Athkatla. Additionally Gamers Nexus is featuring an in-depth interview with BG2R project lead Cuvieronius.

AmstradHero is talking about the major themes that will play out in The Shattered War in this week's blog post. Using thematic threads, which will be woven throughout the module, ensures that his story stays true to the spirit of Dragon Age.

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find that Jinxy Jo has uploaded no less than three new mods for your delight and delectation: Alistair's Mother's Amulet, Alistair's Rose and Monk Armor Set. As if that wasn't enough dgkresge is making it easier to advance with the More Xp Earned mod. And continuing on from last week's runic enhancement, veetoks is giving away Rune Slots for Shale And Dog Companions.

And Finally ...

Technically there is no "And Finally ..." section week. Writing about my own update to the Dragon Age Toolset Wiki seemed a little narcissistic. So instead I'll close by asking you to let me know if there are other features you would like included or other aspects of Dragon Age modding you would like covered.

Sonmeister has released some new playable content: the Pints and Quarts Tavern is found on the road east of Redcliffe and since the Barkeep is a wily old dog he is sure to know a rumour or two that might be worth investigating. The module is also available on Dragon Age Nexus.

Challseus reveals the "glamorous" side of modding in his journal this week using what little spare time he had to do admin for his Rose of Eternity project. He also posted a couple of dramatic pictures so it is well worth the visit!

If you are looking to give your latest level an authentic "Grey Warden" feel then you might want to incorporate the new Griffon Crest resource which Amycus has created and uploaded for modders like you! The resource is also available on Dragon Age Nexus.

AmstradHero introduces us to Templar Commander Farouk who is a significant character in The Shattered War. This week's
post gives you a glimpse at Farouk's background and motivations. Maleficarum should give Farouk a very, very wide berth.

Shuffling off it apparent winter hibernation and showing new signs of life, the guys working on Monomyth: The Relic have posted some new artwork on the project's Facebook page.

Mooglator reveals he is nobody's April Fool in this week's Sunday Update. You can also visit some more places of interest in the City of Athkatla, including the formidable Temple of Helm.

Queen of the Cutscene, DahliaLynn is up to her old tricks again. And by "old tricks" we mean creating another cinematic masterpiece in the form of Alistiar's Dream. Be warned it has more emotional impact that a heavyweight champions boxer's right fist so be prepared to watch it again and again and again and again!

DarthParametric has created the succinctly named DA Normal Map from Tangent NM Photoshop Action to make life easier for anyone converting textures for Dragon Age models. You can also watch a video of the action in action!

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus (not mentioned above) we find Theodor can offer us some powerful protection in the form of the Guardian Armor mod; Jengonthanda can fix lots of those annoying conversation and plot bugs with the Magenta Emerald mod; and untamedfuture lets a dwarven maiden wear the armour that is rightfully hers with the Sigrun of the Dead mod.

Posted Image

And Finally ...

LemmingoftheGDA who, as you may recall appeared in a couple of recent issues, may be bidding Dragon Age modding a fond farewell but before riding off into the sunset wanted to highlight the Combat Delay Reduction DAO and DAA by LemmingoftheGDA and Offkorn. In their own words "it is a game changer".

It's always a shame when someone leaves our community but if we may paraphrase Douglas Adams: So long and thanks for all the mods!

Headlines for 11 April 2012

It seems there may be a little unexpected temporal distortion affecting the City of Athkatla as the BG2R Team's chronicler, Mooglator, has posted this week's Sunday Update on a Saturday! Nonetheless it is crammed full of modding goodness that will instantly flay, I mean blow, your mind:

Challseus again demonstrates the dizzying array of elements that have to be balanced while trying to develop his Rose of Eternity module. This week in his journal we see him juggling real life commitments, directing VO artists, squishing bugs and being inspired by 3D icebergs!

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find MissBasha bringing a touch of the glamour to Thedas' elven folk with her Fantasy Elves Presets mod:

Posted Image

Additionally Errand guarantees to make the Robes of the Gifted drop from the Adventuring Mage in the Wooded Glen (in Careless Accusations quest) with his Robes of the Gifted mod; Gewitterwolke makes three versions of Alistair's Rose to available to warm your Warden's heart on the road to Amaranthine with the Romance Mementos for Awakening mod; Ragnathul, inspired by the Warden's Fall video, has given one of your Warden's companions a new look with the Justice - Wardens Fall mod; and maymay1588 shows us what Lady Hawke was doing before the family had to flee to Kirkwall with the Female Hawke at Ostagar mod.

Headlines for 18 April 2012

Challseus has managed to cram five (count them) posts into his journal since we last peeked at his Rose of Eternity project. Admittedly we did manage to give him a head start by missing last Tuesday's entry. In any event there a flurry of bug fixes, new voice overs, brainstorming the ending and even some new dialogue. In fact he has been working so much we are feeling tired just reading about it!

Posted Image

The BG2R Blog's Sunday Update was similarly full of the new and the exiting. Our weekly guide, Mooglator, introduced us to some friendly Yuan-ti and Mind Flayers before continuing our whistle-stop temple tour of City of Athkatla. Also if you are into making VFX with the toolset the BG2R Team are looking for you ... in a good way of course.

Queen of the Cutscene, DahliaLynn, has created a new Alistair's Dream/Nightmare project for that awesome cutscene which we featured two weeks ago. The mod which will integrate the cutscene into the Single Player Campaign and allow your Warden an insight into Alistair's angst-ridden mind.

Deano1981 has started a new group, DAO: Defense of the King for developers and fans of his recently created his Dragon Age Origins: Defence of the King project. If you are involved, interested in getting involved or simply interested in the project you now have somewhere to call home.

New on the Nexus

Before delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we have to mention one we missed from a couple of weeks back, namely Hsli Sexy Outfits by Hsli. To make up for our omission you can feast your eyes on one of the new outfits included in this pack:

Posted Image

Additionally, Errand77 fixes a quest issue with his A Lost Nug Quest Fix DAO mod; Gewitterwolke add's several new weapons to Bodahn's store with the Awakening Weapon Models for Origins mod; Morphious reposts some old favourites in the Ancient Blood Magic mod; and MrSquits makes spell chucking a little easier with the Origins - No Friendly Fire Damage mod.

And Finally ...

Dedicated newshound, Allacia, discovered an entertaining piece of Dragon Age machinima in the Walking Brewery by baradnimras. We hope you like visiting with your old friends Alistair and Oghren.

Headlines for 25 April 2012

Player choice is a tricky thing to master, fortunately for us AmstradHero is taking time to talk about what he is doing in The Shattered War to tame this particular beast. In this week's post he discusses about how the world will take note of the player's choices, the impact they will have and the way they can sneak up from behind and stab the player in the back! Or is that rogues?

It's been thirteen years since Challseus created the world became the Rose of Eternity so this week his journal is taking a long and fond look back its origins. And yet all this reminiscing only increases our anticipation for the next instalment!

While Mooglator is still hunting high and low for someone, possibly you, to help out creating visual effects this week's Sunday Update leaves the generous confines of the City of Athkatla and eschews the traditional temple tour to savour the work of the BGR2's teams 2D and 3D artists. Like this trio of scantily clad Orcs:

New kid on the block Deano1981 is also now a new kid on the blog!  This week he has been talking about what inspired him to start his Dragon Age Origins: Defence of the King project; answering a few questions and outlining some of the main features.

Modaholic A_b_i___C_h_a_n starts off the week by offering up a double helping of customisation in the form of her AC's Eye Textures and Fenris Tattoo In Origins projects. Both mods are also available on Dragon Age Nexus (here and here) for your convenience.

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus (not mentioned above) we find:

MoonWolf397 has reposted Dwimordene's Song of the Rose mod which provides a set of musically themed items for Leliana; Edrahil477 provides an unusual look you can use to customise a companion or NPC with his Dak'kon's Set mod; abichann ups the ante from 2 to 5 by sharing her Abichanns Face Textures, Abichanns Elven Face Morph and Varric in Origins mods in addition to those featured above; and Aldaroshka overhauls the look of the Warden's squad with the Companions Redesigned mod.

Headlines for 2 May 2012

Newshound turned cinematic director Allacia has created the ominously sounding Big Scary Machinima Project for purposes unknown. Perhaps the pictures posted in her Toolset Tinkering album can give us an inkling:

Posted Image

AmstradHero discusses dialogue options, converses about camera angles and is vocal about voice overs in a detailed update on what has been keeping him busy in his The Shattered War project.

Challseus is keeping it short and sweet this week in his journal with just a single post ruminating on how the cinematic nature of the Rose of Eternity sometimes makes him feel like a movie director.

In this Sunday Update, temple tour guide and unrelated image pusher, Mooglator reveals some areas that are currently under construction in the City of Athkatla. Alarming one of them appears to be full of marauding Orcs and when we tried to notify the city's guilds it turned out they had their hands, or rather minds, full with a recent Mind Flayer infestation.

Community code monkey Sunjammer has created the awkwardly titled Dadbdata Database Switcher utility which is aimed squarely at all those crazy people who use multiple toolset databases and have to use B2B to share content. We are unreliably informed that some vaguely meaningful information in the form of a User Guide will be available to download just as soon as it is written!

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find: kublikhan gives our ears a little respite with his Quiet Battle Music mod; and kianta405 ensures Alistair never gets lonely at night with her Unfaithful Mod and The Last Night mods.

And Finally ...

A few days ago BioWare's web developer Jeff Rousell announced some long overdue changes to BSN projects. One of these changes creates a new "Status" search criteria and sets this status to "Planning" for all projects. Obviously where the author is still active in the community they can simply select a more appropriate status for their project however many projects which have long been abandoned by their author have very useful content and we want it to be easy to find.

Therefore after 4th May, when these changes go live, if you notice one of your favourite projects has an incorrect status drop me a PM with the project's name and URL and I'll see about getting its status amended.

Keeping things on the level AmstradHero is talking about how he goes about designing areas for The Shattered War in this week's blog post.

Challseus turns the spotlight on some of the team members in his journal this week and even managed to fix a bug with one of the new abilities created for his Rose of Eternity module.

Lions, and tigers, and bugbears! Oh, my! The orcs that invaded the City of Athkatla have been joined by several of their humanoid cousins in this week's Sunday Update and true to form temple tour guide Mooglator entreats us to enjoy in the magenta glow of the Twisted Rune.

New kid on the blog Deano1981 talks about new races, new skills and new cities in this week's post. He also includes some additional developer's notes to let you know how things are progressing with his Dragon Age Origins: Defence of the King project.

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find: gonzalezmelissa83 has been giving some of the men a bit of stubble with her Morphs Soris Gilmore Tamlen and Jowan mod; kublikhan continues to lower the noise levels with the Quiet Battle Dialog mod; and lucaslotr has fixed a couple of issues in the Arcane Warrior melee skill trees mod originally created by rebel5555s.

Busy bee Challseus has been doing a bit of everything as he has been working on the final chapter of his Rose of Eternity module. Apparently it makes him feel, well, a bit ...

Mooglator offers up a few more images of the City of Athkatla in this week's Sunday Update. Fortunately the monsters that have been rampaging through the streets for the last couple of weeks appear to have been driven off.

Recently returned Noob766 has uploaded new version of his Vigil Vendor and created a new All Origins Playable by all Races and classes project which allows you to play any origin story regardless of your choice of race and class.

New on the Nexus

Even more prolific than before (thanks to a humble wireless mouse), Challseus reveals in his journal how he has been making great progress with a new interior level. In addition he has been writing and staging conversations and implementing item set bonuses. And if that isn't enough he discusses how important it is to ensure every area in his Rose of Eternity modules should be something to the player can look forward to discovering.

Taking time away from some serious hacking and slashing, aspiring artist Mooglator has produced another couple of paintings of locations in the City of Athkatla. These works of art are beautifully framed in this week's Sunday Update.

With an unwavering eye for detail AmstradHero is nonetheless getting a little random in his latest post on level design as he creates a little house and garden for The Shattered War.

When you install the Jowan's Intention Fix by MzThorn you can access a new quest on the Denerim Chanter's Board. At least you will once you have taken Andraste's Ashes to Arl Eamon.

Continuing to churn out mods at a great rate of knots, Noob766 adds another two to his tally this week by releasing content for his Effects Handler and Area Loot projects!

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find PorkchopExpress has art imitating life when Corinne meets Leliana and kublikhan makes it possible compile your own Origins sound track with the Dragon Age Music Editor.

Clearly deeply offended by our attempt to make light of his artistic aspirations, Mooglator shows a more serious side by presenting some of the data that underpins some of the systems in the City of Athkatla module. But fear not arithmophobic readers there are still a couple of pretty pictures in this week's Sunday Update to bring you comfort and protect your eyes from those nasty numbers.

And if for any reason you don't think this image of the week isn't as exciting or dramatic as you had expected due to the total lack of orcs then consider for a moment that it was this one or a picture of a spreadsheet!

Headlines for 6 June 2012

Swampland Tower Adventure is an ominously named add-on for Single Player campaign by Sonmeister. The module is also available to download from Dragon Age Nexus. What rewards await those foolhardy enough to attempt to hack their way through the inhabitants if this Maker-forsaken fortress in a stretch of septic wasteland just north of the Korcari Wilds? Only time will tell ...

Challseus was kind enough to let us know the company hosting his website has changed and things went somewhat awry. Hopefully everything has been restored but in case you experienced issues accessing his May or June journals he wanted to assure you that development on the Rose of Eternity continues unabated. He has waved goodbye to May with a couple of levels and some VO work and has welcomed June with some combat and abilities testing. There is also a hint of multiple endings and satifying epilogues.

Not so new kid on the blog, Deano1981 may have been attempting to avoid detection but switching the location of his blog; but he should have realised it would not be enough to throw our dogged newshounds off the sense. Apparently the blog is dead: long live the blog!

It seems Mooglator has put that dreadful data ordeal firmly behind him and is returning to the more comfortable role of City of Athkatla guide. A special treat in this week's Sunday Update is a video tour of the unique Jansen Family Home. If you do one thing this week make sure you click on that YouTube link!

New on the Nexus

Delving into the latest files on Dragon Age Nexus we find Minascola provides a fresh face for female human noble wardens with her Lynne Cousland Facemorph mod; and StevoSegalovic gives Morrigan an "as advertised" look with his Sacred Ashes - Robes of Possession replacer mod.

And Finally ...

Next week's issue of the Modders' Weekly Digest is going to be something of an "evening edition" and will, more than likely, miss its self-imposed "some time on Wednesday" deadline and will, more than likely, be published on Thursday. To quote the large friendly letters on the cover of the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy: "Don't Panic".

In addition to the daily development task of writing, writing, VO, level design, ability creation, combat testing and writing; Challseus tries his hand at a spot of impromptu film reviewing. You can check on the progress of his Rose of Eternity module and find out what he has to say about Indie Game: The Movie in his journal.

This week Mooglator teases us with a very brief Sunday Update which consists simply of a Egyptian-looking work-in-progress image. What in the City of Athkatla could that be for?

jackkel dragon is in the process of planning machinima miniseries called Dragon Age: Sins of the Father which will consist of five episodes and will be created with the Dragon Age toolset. The story is a direct sequel to his not-quite-finished Scars of War module which can be downloaded from Dragon Age Nexus.

Meanwhile ejoslin is taking steps to ensure that Alistair will give the speech at the Denerim gates even if Loghain was spared during the Landsmeet. If you are one of the many, many, many Alistair fans out there then you need to keep your eyes firmly fixed on her Alistair Gives Gate Speech if King project.

AmstradHero returns to talking about his The Shattered War with an insightful post outlining how he is intending to make his module react to the player and how this can affect and influence their gaming experience. He discusses how balancing the consequences of the player's decision validates their choice but can leave them wondering about the road not travelled. Intriguing stuff!

All is revealed in this week's Sunday Update as habitual City of Athkatla tour guide Mooglator sinks to new lows, plumbs new depths and proves he's down with it when he reveals the Lower Tombs, the basement in the Jensen Family Home and Mekrath Morgue. Be sure to check out the comments section for links DarthParametric's work-in-progress threads.

As singular of purpose as cyclops on a unicorn, Challseus has focused all his attention this week on completing one particularly important conversation in his Rose of Eternity module. It seems he has neglected eating, sleeping, bathing and even his journal for the last five days or so ... *ahem* ... we might be exaggerating a teeny-weeny bit on some of those omissions.

Syraia30 has created a new project for testing her Face Tattoos. You can download the beta version of her tattoos from Dragon Age Nexus. Time for your next Warden to get some serious ink!
