Games are no longer stand alone?

I'm told that there is a comic or some such that explains all this. Why the heck should I have to buy a comic to understand the story and characters of this game? Weren't the games always supposed to be standalone, with the comics and novels being secondary stories and information that weren't directly tied to the game?
I didn't have a problem with Liara and Feron's adventure being separate, because my Shepard wasn't involved. I didn't build any relationships or learn anything on that adventure, because my Shepard didn't experience it. It may have been important to the plot, but it wasn't integral to my character, so leaving it aside was fine.
But this is different. You are just plopping in a new character and saying "hey, you're friends now, have fun". What the hell? Nothing has been forced on us like this in the series so far. Every relationship your character develops, you develop. Granted, some of them seem to go along one-way paths (Kaiden always wants to take my Shepard to bed, no matter how I interact with him), but the interaction was always my choice. This is just ridiculous.

Just curious, where the heck did Vega come from? How does he know my Shepard? Why does my Shepard know him?

I assume you've never played Mass Effect 1 or 2 then?

He's just another solider that is posted on duty over Shepard. Not much needed to explain there. They're not really "buddy/buddy" so much as they're being civil with each other so far. I'm assuming you probably actually grow a relationship with him as the game progresses.

If I was playing this game for the first time, then I would not think too much of it.

I did not hear this kind of complaint directed to jocker or Kaidan in ME1

You shouldn't need wiki's. These are the kinds of things a story should cover.
Agree 1000%
I shouldn't have to play DLC from the previous game to know some characters who apparently know you very well, I hope when I use my load, it will see no DLC and the character won't respond in such a manner.

What a huge complain. /sarcasm
actually this is kind of a legitimate complaint. The comics/books are supposed to fill in details of plot points to the main game, not create new ones.
Take LOTSB for example. We all now know that Liara was the one who recovered shepards body and gave it to cerberus. But that was only mentioned passivly in the actual game. Before the dlc it wasn't mentioned at all. Yet how was anyone who didn't read the comic supposed to know thats what happened?

Going by that logic I assume you want a game where Shepard is born and has to defeat the trials of early life. And a sequel where he is 21 and he has to defeat the debt COLLECTORS...and so on...
I smell an ME/Sims crossover.

2° Play Arrival (or watch a walkthrough of the dlc on Youtube)
That's all you need to understand the intro

It's Joker, which by the way you do get to know during dialogue with him, or did joker just volunteer his condition to Shepard? <_<crimzontearz wrote...
well......I am pretty sure it will be explained.

Kaidan is a marine serving under Shepards command, the same as Joker we get to know him through the course of the story, in ME3 Shepard already knows Vega, wut?

FACT: The whole galaxy knows Shepard after everything that he's done. Secondly, Vega barely knows Shepard, they're barely buddies, so you will get the chance to build that relationship just like you did Joker and Kaidan/Ashley etc.
I was talking about the first game. and also the second. I swear there is at least a few times in each where someone I've just met says "hello Commander" before we've been formally introduced.

When we first meet Vega, both he and Shepard seem to have a relationship prior to our understanding. The problem is, this is not an introduction to the series and while we will learn about Vega over the course of the story, I don't really see the need for him to be present at the start it just seems a little forced.
At the end of the day it is a minor detail and it isn't going to bug me, what is bugging me is where the trial has gone.
