I imagine he will be like ME1. You were thrust with Kaidan in the squad. You get to know him along the way and ask him personal questions. Same thing with Ash. She certainly came out of nowhere.

I don't really see the issue. I just see it as a video game character I'll get to know. If I like him, I do. If I don't, I don't. I'll just ask him personal questions to see. I doubt it's going to be "Hey everybody! Don't ask me about anything personal please! I just want to shoot some baddies!"

He wouldn't have much depth then.

Shep wasn't overtly friendly with kaiden and ashley though. Some banter? Sure, but not buddy buddy friendly and familiar.

Even then we were given a little exposition on kaiden and ashley when they were introduced, giving them context and personality before any further interaction.

Vega? Lol nope. He's been there all along, doing something apparently. The comic doesn't even delv that far, all we know is that vega guarded shep. Why does that mean my shep is friendly with him? Did vega buy shep a soda?

Out of all the backstory established with shep, we were never forced any "friends from the past" without at least being given the option of our reaction toward said "Friend." In the demo this is not the case.

ITs worrying for the rest of the game too.

Frankly, I could have accepted a forced friend, back in ME1. Shepard could have had a friend or a relationship before we got in, and, while I might not have liked it tons if I didn't like the character (Hannah Shepard? Totally ok). But one at this point is really, really weird. Every other character in the game, we've built our own friendships with.

Discounting the original Normandy crew and the people from your origin quest, everyone Shepard knows, the player knows, and the player built the relationship with. Even Kaiden, you could have chosen to be a completely focused XO/CO who doesn't do anything more than give him orders, from the very beginning of the relationship up until the point he is reduced to nuclear dust.

The non-interactivity (again, hoping that's just the demo) of the intro we've seen is part of what contributes to the feel of Vega. A dialogue option in how Shepard responded to him would have done a lot to establish even this relationship as a player-driven one. Someone coming up who has respect for Shepard, and everything Shepard's done, that could still work. But Shepard's reaction reallly doesn't. Partially, because it isn't our reaction, and partially because it cements the two as knowing each other, even though we, and through us, our Shepards, don't know him.

Dialogue options:

Er, who are you again? (Left side of wheel. My Shepard meets a lot of people, ok? Heck, we got this option with Cerberus, and my Shepard definitely didn't forget them)
No need to salute me. (Paragon side)
Carry on. (Middle option)
You haven't earned the right to salute me. (Renegade side)

And, while I'm at it, I'd like to say that I'm also a little worried at the lack of investigation and neutral dialogues in the demo.

True, but I thought this was a bad thing in ME1; the conversations seemed phony to me. It would have worked for me if Bio established that Shepard had just been transferred  to the Normandy, but they didn't.

I thought they did.  In fact, I thought they established that everyone had just been transferred.  The Normandy was a brand new ship, this was literally its first mission, and they had assembled a new crew.  You didn't know any of them before you got there, you only knew them (briefly) as their XO on the trip from Earth to Eden Prime.

And Ashley wasn't even part of the crew until that mission, so you didn't know her either.

Shepard calls him James in a very casual way. Then he is on the Normandy. There is a lot missing here, for a character that will be on a small squad. I'm assuming the full game will be more elaborate.
But really, read the wiki? Arrival? That is exactly what the op is talking about. You need to gather arround information from seperate sources. Not good, and hopefully not like this in the full game.

And still everything else is unnecesary for Shepards plot or explained ingame. Everything except Vega.

Playing ME 1 & 2 without expanded universe doesn't take you to any "lolwut? what's happening here?" momment, but ME3 demo does in the first minutes, freaking great job!

How is anything Shepard does unexplainable? 1. it is quite apparent Shepard is detained becasue he is in a detainment room right at the start. 2

2. He says you can not to call me commander anymore. He has obviously lost rank through some proceeding. Vega salutes becasue he still believes Shepard a hero currrent circumstance irrelevant. Shepard is a hero worthy of respect.

3. Vega is obviously the liason/ guard tasked with bringing Shepard to the human council when that is requested.

4. They show respect with a handshake. I have done that broshake with people I just met. Once with an Iraq vet being redeployed that I just met at a club. I am not a slodier but they are more comrades in arm than I could ever be.

5. We still don't know how he ended on Normandy I bet it is just like Ashley picked-up out of war zone. There were not too many rides out after all. He may not be a member of the Normandy before the intro happens.

Oh, yeah, BTW, what are the chances that Conviction has FemShep in it?  Because, if not, it can't in any way be considered canon for my Shepard.

It doesn't actually show Shepard, the only part where you see him/her is at the second to last frame and only their N7 gaunlets are visible (and in cuffs).

...Okaaaaay...

In that case, how the heck can it set up Vega as a character Shepard knows any better than the intro does?

What do you mean know? As far as we know from the intro, the only thing they know about each other is each other's names and mutual respect since their both soldiers.

No, they're best friends because they salute and shake hands. Also calling someone by their first name is a sign of familiarity, even if you're not enlisted.

True story.

if you wanna know who Vega is read the damned books and the comics. he was assigned as a bodyguard to commander Shepard during his trial for wiping out the Alpha relay. Shepard was also discharged for blowing it up, which is why Admiral Anderson reinstated him.

Point taken about Ashley. My bad for not calling Nashkital on bringing up Ash in the first place; she's utterly irrelevant to this discussion.

As for the rest... sure, the Normandy was a new ship with a new crew. But when we build a new ship, we don't just hand the keys to the crew and have them meet for the first time as the ship sets out on an operational mission. Many of the crew will have been with the ship for quite a while during the fitting-out. And while some posts might be filled at the last minute, XO is really not one you want to handle that way.

Maybe the Alliance does things differently? Alliance protocols are whatever Bio decides they are, after all. But in the absence of other data, I assumed that they do things the way we do things.

the point of this thread is that this info SHOULD be put INTO THE GAME.  So that players know that!

Oh Vega? Shepard met him at the skin tight tee shirt bar. They were both buying gold chains, axe body spray and sideways ball caps.
