I have a friend who is French and is playing this game. His first comment was "why do Fereldens dress like clowns?" in regards to the noble dress in Cousland origin.

He did not seem to appreciate Orlais being depicted as bathing in cakes and living in sin. But he did say this while munching on macarons so he didn't make much of a point. He also said something along the lines of "We French are not barbaric enough to invade Ferelden and rape their wives, that's what you British did." Methinks French are still holding grudge against us about Hundred Years' War...
Probably. I still get angry when I read a list of historical buildings (castles etc.) burned and destroyed by the French in the Low Countries (both Belgium and the Netherlands) over a couple of centuries. But they have given us the croissant, so much is forgiven :innocent:.
It seems that for the French people, it was yet another proof that self-image and what others perceive are completely different. He did appreciate one thing, though: "yes, you English have terrible dress sense", he said.
One thing I am slightly uneasy about is how easy it is to 'confuse' those loveable, freedom-loving Fereldens with their pseudo-democracy with Anglo-Americans (and a few associated Northern European nations) and the overly sophisticated, stratified, agressive Orlesians with France. It works because of clichés (aggressive Napoleonic France, Norman opressors, the 'evils' and the 'decadent' court of Ancien Regime France from Louis XIV to Louis XVI), but these clichés themselves derive from propaganda. British aristocrats were just as much into powder as their French peers, and the British didn't exactly end up ruling a quarter of the globe because they were such loveable freedom-loving pseudo-democrats. Not that there is anything resembling a 'political agenda' in the way Orlais is depicted, that's silly, but it's not very thoughtful either and, if I were Francophone, perhaps even somewhat insulting.
Would be interesting to see how they're going to depict Anderfels.
Maybe Anderfels natives will sing
'Ve dance und sing und valse und two-step
Und never ever mach der goose-step'
