Yeah! That would be as silly as England, France, Spain, and Portugal discovering a new continent full 'savages' and attempting to colonize it!

As we know, empires only invade their technological and economic equals.

I think with Ferelden the comparison is more toward Britain ... first Rome tried to take it and failed, then France made a grab in 1066.

1066 was just the Normans, themselves fairly recent imports to France from Scandinavia...

Ferelden is a very loosely cobbled-together amalgam of medieval England and Germany, but ironically the Orlesian conquest sounds more like a 'fantasy reversal' of the Hundred Years War. One nation invades another, (partially) conquers it and causes lots of suffering and mayhem in the course of a very long conflict, before finally being kicked out. Only in this case, the nation standing in for France is the invader/conqueror, rather than being the one getting invaded.

Considering Bioware is a Canadian company (Edmonton, Alberta)  from a country with a French-speaking minority (a result of the British conquest in 1759), the depiction of Orlais as a harsh and opressive conqueror is kind of ironic...

I wonder what French gamers think of the depiction of Orlais and Ferelden in DA?

I have a friend who is French and is playing this game. His first comment was "why do Fereldens dress like clowns?" in regards to the noble dress in Cousland origin.

He did not seem to appreciate Orlais being depicted as bathing in cakes and living in sin. But he did say this while munching on macarons so he didn't make much of a point. He also said something along the lines of "We French are not barbaric enough to invade Ferelden and rape their wives, that's what you British did." Methinks French are still holding grudge against us about Hundred Years' War...

It seems that for the French people, it was yet another proof that self-image and what others perceive are completely different. He did appreciate one thing, though: "yes, you English have terrible dress sense", he said.

Probably. I still get angry when I read a list of historical buildings (castles etc.) burned and destroyed by the French in the Low Countries (both Belgium and the Netherlands) over a couple of centuries. But they have given us the croissant, so much is forgiven :innocent:.

One thing I am slightly uneasy about is how easy it is to 'confuse' those loveable, freedom-loving Fereldens with their pseudo-democracy with Anglo-Americans (and a few associated Northern European nations) and the overly sophisticated, stratified, agressive Orlesians with France. It works because of clichés (aggressive Napoleonic France, Norman opressors, the 'evils' and the 'decadent' court of Ancien Regime France from Louis XIV to Louis XVI), but these clichés themselves derive from propaganda. British aristocrats were just as much into powder as their French peers, and the British didn't exactly end up ruling a quarter of the globe because they were such loveable freedom-loving pseudo-democrats. Not that there is anything resembling a 'political agenda' in the way Orlais is depicted, that's silly, but it's not very thoughtful either and, if I were Francophone, perhaps even somewhat insulting.

Would be interesting to see how they're going to depict Anderfels. B)
Maybe Anderfels natives will sing
'Ve dance und sing und valse und two-step
Und never ever mach der goose-step'

An additional tidbit is that Maric died five years before the events of DAO, which is directly mentioned in the game's narrative.

Actually he vanished and everyone assumed he was dead.

The Anderfels are stated to be the poorest country by the Codex. Having lands completely lifeless from multiple Blights will do that. Ferelden has organization, just looser central control. If it did, Loghain's depravities would have gone unchallenged. And as for Orlais, a country where each and every noble has the personality and ruthlessness of Caligula is not an enviable one.

Also, they paint their faces. Do they also have an effete lisp and limp wrists? How stereotypically effeminate can you make one culture?

They could have been the poorest maybe because their country was the most struck by Blight...but i have read and heard infos that Anderfels was the birth of the Gray wardens, so i should say they're the country with the most wardens though some of the wardens are corrupt, hungry for power and they mess with the politics, they might be one of the progressive country in Thedas if they weren't Plagued by many Blights, i just based on what i saw when i was playing....denerim is not much of a beautiful place coz of the slums which are more dominant than Fancy estates, which I find not fancy at all.....

some said Ferelden is one of the richest country when it comes to mineral and ore deposits could it be true?

Lolz.  Seriously though,OP,I do not think Fereldans are a disorganized bunch.
As for poverty....I seem to recall they had been occupied by the Orlesians for almost a century, and we all know these kind of "guests",even when they are contributing to the infrastructure one way or another, tend to come for the souvenirs, not to empower their "minions".

Then there was a Blight or something, with drunken darkspawn tourists and a godawful, purple Archdemon redecorating the place.      :P

Like most expansionist empires from our own history, the Orlesians probably believed they were bringing "order" to the uncivilized savages out in Ferelden.

While I'm not a fan of the Orlesians, what you described abovve is actually what they did, whether you like it or not.

And  to me it seemed obvious that the Free Marches was the most disorganized region in Thedas...

I guess Free Marchers could be the most disorganized cuz they don't stand as Nation they stand as free states..ruled by many lords such as Viscounts.
and for me it seems to be that the Quns those with horns looks very open minded and forgiving (except for Sten my Companion in DAO) [whose really an ****] could it be that their place might be describe as the most organized, cuz those Quns complain too much about, Humans, Elves and Dwarves cultures and laws, plus the fact they invented the telescope according to Dragon age: Awakening so they might be the most scientifically organized.

Quns [with horns and not those who were just converted] simply whine too much about other races lives [Quns are Ugly race] but could they be most organized?
