Ok just wondering.  If we are say a sword and shield character can we switch it up so that the shield is carried in the right hand and sword in left?  Or is our right hand always going to be the "official" main hand while left is the off hand? I know it is a small gripe but as a left handed person this has always bugged me in games.

Yeah. This is a frivilous and unneccessary discrimination of an innocent minority. You should totally sue.

I really doubt it. What game does that anyway? Would you want money spent in making left hand work (including the graphic work and animation work?) Some blades would require left hand versions and so added cost (e.g. a left hand version of a blade with an edge on one side with a hand guard, assuming such a blade exists in DA).

I'd rather see the option to be left handed than have the option for a homosexual relationship.

You and me both. Think of the potential if all that work catering to a dismal minority went into developing actual content.

OR you could just mirror the model.

Actually as another left handed person, this is one of the features I most hope for in games, I think most people like to make characters that resemble them/they identify with. For me the first item is gender, I prefer to play male protagonists, second place is left handed, before ethnic appearance. I've mostly given up hope on this though, it seems these days even baseball games don't let you be a lefty at some positions.

I just had to laugh at that comment.

But obviously, it is like the medieval times... They forced the lefties to write/fight with their right hand.  Or else they'd get brutally murdered, of course. Has something to do with an increase in corruption-by-demon-chance, when using your left hand.

I can very much understand why people want this though. I too like to make characters that resemble me to a certain level.  I know I can never make myself play female characters, at least. Luckily I am right handed.

In the 2nd blight the Chantry noticed that a majority of the darkspawn were left handed. They decreed that there would be no left handed people after that. Parents would immediately change a childs' behaviour to being right handed if the child displayed any left handed tendencies. Though no longer strictly enforced in Fereldan it is still a model that most parent go by to this day.

Bah! Haasth beat me to the punch!  Though my wording was more flowery. :D

Well in the real world there are still some offshoots of Christianity that won't let kids be left handed as it is the hand Judus accepted the bribe from the romans. So I am damn proud to be left handed!

*edit* as no one can tell me what to do.  Not that I like bribes heh.

Torchlight does it.
It doesn't seem like it'd be TOO difficult, just a reversal of animations. But I'm no developer. But I can understand being left-handed and wanting a left-handed character. It's like playing a skateboarding game and being forced to ride regular if you're goofy-footed. (I always hated that)

I would like to see this also, however I always imangined myself wielding a sword with my right hand for some reason so it does not bother me that much.

Come to think of it the only thing I do with my left hand is write. I used to bat right handed, I use the Wii remote and mouse with my right hand.

"you will not be able to use a shield in your right hand and a sword in your left hand, but you can do many other things. For instance, we have allowed players to wield small daggers and arrows with their teeth, as well as dual wield weapons by binding them to their feet. We have also allowed people to wear helmets on any part of the body they wish (want that extra protection where it counts? now you can!)" (quote from the mystical realm of imaginery facts)

Can we be left handed? It's like asking if we can be retarded. It's possible, but why would anyone want to be?

Unable to be left handed in games is actually a peeve for real left-handed people. You got to be one to know the feeling. I am left handed, though what annoys me the most as a gamer is to see those uber gaming mice all geared to right handed people. All left handers have learned to be ambidextrous one way or the other, but those little differences can still be somewhat bothersome.

Within a game it's not much of a practical problem, but considering an RPG in particular it does break immersion a bit since you know that's really not a good representation of oneself...

On the other hand, the animations would need a little extra work *just* for the sake of all the lefties out there, and it's understandable that most game companies (if not all) are not into it.
