So I had read something about if you didn't talk to a squad member after you acquired him or her that you could delay the crew abduction for more than 2 missions after Derelict Reaper. On my current Infiltrator run I decided to test that out. Unfortunately I was not able to test all that many variables so this would obviously not be completely definitive.
To get right to it, after I picked up Thane I did not even go into Life Support once. I still had Pragia, Treason and Revenge to play main story wise, and several N7 missions.
At any rate I went to the Derelict Reaper and played through it. Next I activated Legion and got him his rifle. I then went to Pragia and did that mission with Legion (first time I had done that). At this point Legion's mission was still not unlocked, but Kelly would remind me to talk with Thane when I wandered through the CIC. EDI made no mention of the IFF. I stopped at Illium to get an upgrade and then went to the Zelene System and did N7 Captured Mining Facility.
After that was done I wanted to go back to the Shadow Broker ship to pick up an upgrade. So I went through the mass relay, and flew to Hagalaz. After I clicked on "dock" the scene with Shepard at the map played where EDI tells him the IFF is installed, and the crew abduction commenced. I thought it was odd that EDI didn't mention it at all when I would approach the map in the CIC as she usually does.
So I reloaded to after Derelict Reaper and thought I would try leaving Legion deactivated. I played Pragia and then Captured Mining facility and still had the same result when I subsequently tried to land on Illium.
That's that. I couldn't delay it by avoiding Thane. Maybe if you don't talk to more of them I don't know. If this was Mythbusters I would say "Busted" (even though I did not test every variable).
Perhaps the delay is just a random bug. Or maybe I am missing something.
