Please tell me I'm not the only one here who prefers quality over
quantity when it comes to gaming. I prefer games that last forever
(such as everything by Blizzard Entertainment [since Diablo] and
everything by Reenactor Entertainment), over franchises and companies
where people stop playing and talking about the game immediately after
it's release and a new game in the franchise is immediately announced
upon the release of a game (such as Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Final
Fantasy, Left 4 Dead 2, Electronic Arts, Command & Conquer [since
Westwood went defunct], Star Wars games, etc.). I can see the logic
behind why companies release games in such large quantities (but have
little or no real quality or innovation in them), it's because they
earn more money off of 50 little games that die a month after it's
release than they do spending the time, money, and effort to make a
really good game that blows everyone's mind over the course of a few
years. There is an old joke about LucasArts and how they have a status
quo of 20 Star Wars games a week (while this may not necessarily be
literal, it isn't far from the truth). While it is true that some of
these "all flash no substance" games may be quite enjoyable, they won't
last forever like those by Blizzard Entertainment and Reenactor
Entertainment. Electronic Arts is one of the worst when it comes to
releasing a bunch of games. Now then, before anyone points out that EA
is a publisher and doesn't generally make games (they just use other
companies to make them for them, which is how they have so many),
please keep in mind that they are (both de facto and de jure) dictators
over those littler companies that they own. In fact, I own the 2001
Electronic Arts game, Sub Command. In fact, Electronic Arts is so bad
about putting quantity ahead of quality that they put on the box
(before and during the game's release) that they would shutdown the
multiplayer in December 2001. Now that is just pathetic, and not just
because you should never shutdown multiplayer, but also because they
planned for the game to go under prior to it's release. Then, they went
off and made a sequel, I mean really, what the hell! So, does anyone
else here feel as I do?

I suppose I agree that I very much prefer quality over quantity in almost everything. I don't buy any games I don't see myself playing for longer than a few days. (Like with Assassin's Creed 1, which I completed in two mornings).

Valve is a great company and Left 4 Dead is actually pretty innovative in a few ways, particularly how the player controlled zombies are handled. It's not a long or epic style RPG game but it's not meant to be.

This is the forum of an RPG developer, everyone here is going to claim to prefer quality over quantity. How true those claims are would be debatable.

Also, the reason there are a lack of quality games isn't always greedy companies spinning out masses of cheap games, it is a combination of personal taste and the fact that some developers are always going to be more talented than others.

Fallout and Fallout 2 were horrible games, I could finish them in 30 minutes flat.

Hey, EA released Mirror's Edge.

I thought it was pretty darn innovative. A bit short, but innovative.

I don't know what the OP is talking about EA is one of the best publishers out there. That they have quantity over quality is just a result of the amount of games that they publish, you can't put that on them. If all that got released were AAA games many underground gems would had never found the spotlight.

No. I did not. That is honestly something I do not find enjoyable what so ever.
The game was fun. But way too short... I am not spending simply a few hours longer to hunt for flags. I'd rather just climb on my own a bit and enjoy the view (Which I did from time to time - beautiful game at least).

-The game needs good controls
-good gameplay
-a fantastic story
-good voice acting
-good music
-good multiplayer (if it has a mode)

If any game does not have any of those the game sucks, like I hate Final Fantasy with a passion, they should have stopped a long time ago. Call of Duty is just being milked and I refuse to buy an expansion. Halo should just die because this is getting stupid now.

I don't care if a system has 50 JRPGs out next year (PS3) majority of them are going to suck and won't live up to the quality of Mass Effect, DAO, Fallout 3, Oblivion, lost Odesty and hell even Fable 2 is better then half the JRPGs out there. While I love the platform Mario games and Zelda (Mario and Zelda have alot of games) they are fun, bring in alot of new stuff and is just outstanding. So yes overall I am a quality gamer. The onlt games I own are quality, I rent lucklaster games to see if they are worth buying, if not I just return them and forget I played them.

Joy is on the hands of the gamer, some people are die hard JRPG fans. I do agree that there are franchises being milked because of their following, yet injecting new life onto a stagnant series is an alternative to doing away with them.

I think everyone prefers quality over quantity. What they think is a quality game is what differs. I have yet to find a game that lasts forever for me. Once I've played through a game I never touch it again.

I will say that I enjoy spending time on a single game, instead of bouncing between multiple, quickly playable games.

-a fantastic story

There goes just about every game, ever. Why are you a gamer if you hate video games so much?

Take your time enjoy the ride, as an older gamer in the mid 40's *cough* I've seen a lot of innovation over the years. I started on a Tandy TRS80 (google that old thing) a whopping 16k. I played from the master of text based games Scott Adams. It wasn't till the early '90's that FTL games brought out Dungeon master, that my friends was the catalyst. I mostly play RPG'S single player as I can take my time and "smell the roses as I go so to speak" and not be rushed by online gaming or getting ganked by a snot nosed kid. Take in the sights & sounds don't rush and appreciate the beauty of what your seeing and hearing, adjust tactics accordingly. A lot of effort goes into some of these games. Enjoy I know I will.....

Oh and did I mention getting the fattest rig possible? Sure helps with total immersion.
