Terminology -- Throughout these FAQs, you might encounter several unique terms.
*Origin (download service) -- Electronic Arts' digital download serive, which use to be called "EA Download Manager" or "EADM" was renamed in 2011 as "Origin". In order to avoid confusion with Dragon Age: Origins, these FAQs will try to refer to the download service as "Origin download service" whenever possible. The Origin download service allows players, even those who purchased the game on disc or through another online service (e.g., Steam) to use their authorization key to download a digital copy of the game. Read more about Origin at http://www.origin.com/us/about .
*DLC – means “downloadable content”. This can refer to any of the optional missions or items produced for the game by Bioware. They must be authorized once by connecting to an online server in the game.
*Patch – updates available online from Bioware that fix known issues with the game. The current patch for all versions of the game is 1.05. Awakening will automatically install 1.03. Ultimate Edition will automatically install 1.04. You can download the latest patches here.
*Authorized/Unauthorized – Downloadable content must be authenticated once by EA’s online servers. Users do this by entering their EA/Bioware username and password within the game. Once DLC is authorized, the game may be played offline. Sometimes, when players are logged in, DLC can become unauthorized. Issues relating to this are discussed in the DLC FAQ (above).
*Mods – one of the advantages to playing Dragon Age: Origins on PC is the availability of thousands of modifications created by users like you. These can alter everything from the appearances of characters to changing the mechanics of the game. Users install “mods” at their own risk—some mods can create unexpected errors in the game. They are NOT supported by Bioware.
*Toolset – the “toolset” is a supplementary program released by Bioware to allow gamers to create mods and other content for the game. It is not officially supported, but there is a forum where users can help each other.
*Launcher – this is the first screen that pops up when starting the game. It contains several options, including a “configure” utility and a “play” button to load the actual game.
Available Versions of the Game -- These FAQs cover all versions of Dragon Age: Origins and its expansion pack, Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening. For help with Dragon Age 2, visit this forum.
*Dragon Age: Origins – this is the original game launched in Nov. 2009. It includes a lengthy story, three downloadable campaigns incorporated into the narrative (The Stone Prisoner, Warden’s Keep, Return to Ostagar), and three downloadable, stand-alone “Other Campaigns” (Liliana’s Song, Golems of Amgarrak, Witch Hunt). Several optional items also exist as downloadable content.
*Dragon Age: Origins Collector's Edition/Digital Deluxe Edition -- This premium version of the original game included some exclusive DLC items access to "The Stone Prisoner" DLC and various physical items (like a "making of" DVD).
*Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening is an expansion pack for Origins, which is installed as an add-on program. Patch 1.03 is also installed with it. While there is no DLC specifically for it, some (but not all) bonus items from Origins and its DLC can be used in Awakening.
*Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition combines the original game, Awakening, and all of the associated DLC into one installation. Patch 1.04 is installed along with the content.
Note: For detailed write-ups on the various editions of the game, consult the Dragon Age Wiki.
