1) How do I know what patch version I currently have installed?

You can find out by selecting the "configure" option on the game's launcher screen.  See this post for step-by-step instructions with pictures (scroll down about half-way through the first entry).

2) What is the latest official patch for Dragon Age: Origins (and Awakening/Ultimate Edition)?
Bioware's latest official patch for all versions of the game is 1.05.  It was released in late 2011 after months of closed and open beta testing.

3) What does the patch fix?

The 1.05 patch itself addresses DLC authorization issues and an installation error specific to digitally-downloaded copies of Ultimate Edition.  It also addresses some lag-time issues with DirectX10-era video cards.  See the official patch page for more.  You can also read through Rob Bartel's official post on the topic.

4) How do I download and apply the patch?
Go to http://social.biowar...page/da-patches to download a self-executing installation file.  Note: It appears EA Origins download service users must also apply the patch manually.  Steam users need to install the patch through the Steam client service.

5) If I download and apply patch 1.05, do I need to install previous patches first?

No.  The 1.05 patch, along with all previous patches, are cumulative; they also install fixes that originated in previous patch iterations.  In other words, one patch to rule them all....

6) How do I "roll-back" to a previous patch version?
There is no official method for uninstalling patches.  Typically, if you want to do this, you need to do a complete uninstall/reinstall of the game.

7) Does the patch cause system instability?

Generally, no.  Some users have reported issues since Patch 1.03 was introduced a few years ago.  Others have not.  Overall, DA: Origins uses code that seems (from the amateur user's standpoint, at least) less optimized than it's successor, Dragon Age 2.  There are several discussions on these subjects available by searching the PC Technical Support Forum.  It has been difficult to determine if a given case of system slowdown/instability can be directly attributed to any patch; users experiencing problems should consult the "READ FIRST" post pinned near the top of the PC Technical Forum to learn about the best options to troubleshoot their particular issue.

8) How do I fix bugs not addressed in the latest patch?

In mid-2011, users on the PC Technical Forum site began collecting known, workable, third-party fixes that address some of the in-game story and combat bugs that persist.  You can find these lists in this post.  The "Community Fixit Project" is neither comprehensive, nor does it guarantee success; any time you mod the game, it could have unexpected results.  However, the solutions presented in that post have been tested and used successfully by at least some users.

9) What patches do various versions of the game install?

The Dragon Age: Awakening expansion pack automatically installs Patch 1.03.  The Ultimate Edition collection installs Patch 1.04.  If you have installed or re-installed either of these, you need to install Patch 1.05.

10) I've seen references to a "Witch Hunt Patch 1.1".  Do I need to install this, too?

Probably not.  Bioware released the Witch Hunt 1.1 patch for users who downloaded that particular DLC within the first week of launch (in September, 2010).  If you've downloaded it since then, or acquired "Witch Hunt" along with the Ultimate Edition, you should be fine.  For more, consult this post.
